Just been reading some Old Galway articles and this one talks about the “Gas Tank” Flaherty’s pub on Docks Rd...

    https://www.advertiser.ie/galway/article/117091/the-black-and-tans-raid-on-oflahertys-pub

    Pub later became Brennan's Pub.

Am looking on geohive but can't work out where it was. Anyone know where it was?

    blow-in envy right there!

it'd be class if SteetView would incorporate old photos like this one, it'd be some project for the archivists!

Adrian Brennan, of Brennan’s pub , was goalie on a Galway minor All Ireland winning football team..late 80s ..

A bit of trivia there ..

Old school drinking pub, a little bit more upmarket than the other Docks pubs at the time notably the Harbour.

What were the early houses called? I should know, i was in both a few mornings back in the day but the names escape me now. Rubin is there now and the other one was The Harbour i think??

I think the Harbour Bar closed around 1995 time.
When I was in college, it was rumored to be where you could pick up a lady of the night.

Apparently the code word was to ask for a box of matches :D

Also, Arch Motors was to the right of the Harbour Bar a few doors down. The building where Boojum and Eastern Tandoori are was built on the Arch Motors site.

We used to meet up in Brennans back in the day to watch Leeds United games.

I was actually in Tech star about 3 weeks ago as it happens with phone issues. First time I'd set foot in the place since it was Brennans. Happy memories of the place, lovely cosy wee spot.

And a rumor was all it was.
But I guess they sold a fair load of matches.

Not forgetting "Woodbine Annie" in Key Street I guess that's where you went with the matches to light up the Woodbine

It might have been H Williams at one point too but, unless my memory has gone completely, it was the location of the first Tesco store in Galway before they pulled out of Ireland.

EDIT: D'internet says H Williams bought it from Tesco.

Tesco Ireland was also the name of an earlier chain of stores in the Republic of Ireland owned by Tesco PLC in the early 1980s. These were originally founded by Albert Gubay as 3 Guys. In 1986, these were sold to the H Williams chain of supermarkets which subsequently collapsed. Many ended up as outlets of other chains.

no not so, Both BOI on Eyre sq were built as bank in the 1840s.. The one closed down was originally the National Bank - I remember in the 70s it had "National Branch" emblazoned on side external wall
