Flogas Clean Export Guarantee

    My son bought a house with solar PV installed. 5 panels in Beechwood Dublin 15.

    No battery or EDDI as far as we know.

    Had a Smart Meter installed a while back.

    Didn't move to a Smart Meter Plan with Flogas.

    Got the following email from Flogas

    "We are writing to update you regarding your excess electricity that you have exported back to the grid.

    From 3 June 2023, credit will be applied to your account automatically on the same date as your electricity bill. The credit will show as a standalone bill that will arrive in addition to your usual electricity bill.

    Your export credit invoice will detail the amount of kWh that you exported, the unit rate per kWh and the total credit that is applied to your account.

    The first credit you receive will be backdated to 1 November 2022 or from the date you began exporting electricity while a Flogas customer.

    Start Date: 17-04-2023

    Export (kWh) received to 21 May 2023: 62.9285 kWh*

    Total (€0.22 per kWh exc. VAT): €13.84

    Total (€0.24 per kWh inc. VAT): €15.09

    Didn't do anything and getting this credit.

    Any advice or comments would be most helpful.

    Should he consider a battery.

    I think he posted questions about that inverter a few days ago. Or maybe you did.

    No change needed for him. He can move electricity provider and will get the export credit. ESB inform the energy provider each time he changes provider.

    I don't have a battery. Not needed for me with that decent export rate.

    For now there's no major changes needed, he's getting paid for whatever he exports. Buying a house tends to be pretty good at using up available money and he's probably got other priorities

    I would recommend trying to get some readout of how much power the panels are producing in real time. He can then time the dishwasher and washing machine to come on when the sun is shining

    The 5 panels is probably rated at 2kWp max, so he's probably going to be able to cover the houses base load and laundry/dishwashing but not cooking or heating (assuming he has a heat pump)

    If he's considering a battery then the inverter will probably need to be replaced as I don't think the current one supports a battery. Alternatively he could get an AC coupled battery which has its own inverter to connect to the houses grid

    An Eddi might be a smart option, it looks like there's plenty of room around the hot water tank and immersion heaters installed already. He can then use the solar panels to heat up water instead of spending money to use gas or electricity

    Also if he has a PHEV or EV he can get a Zappi to charge up the car from solar

    Probably the first two, current status or energy generated today

    Ideally there might be a possibility to add a WiFi adapter to the inverter and keep an eye on it on your phone.

    I'm not really familiar with this model inverter so maybe someone who knows it better can help

    Those panels are 265watt each so max output with sun shining directly on them is 1325 watts. It’s enough to run fridge, tv, and a few bits and help reduce the bills. A battery wouldn’t make any sense on that system. Might be better off getting more panel’s depending on roof size and orientation. It’s worth spending some time going through all the info on the forum to learn about it. Plenty of help available here.

    If it's only outputting 1,325 watts then leave it to give the odd transmission back to the grid when output exceeds use.

    Meant to say, I'm only around the corner. Yeah if you're out of the house most days when the sun is shining then the solar will run the stuff in the house all day (fridge, freezer, oven clock etc.) and you'll get a few euros off your bill due to export if you have a Smart meter fitted. I went mad and fitted 16 newer panels to the roof and have been generating 40 units a day for the last week. SSE Airtricity owe me about €400 in export fees. :)
