This is really really sad news. The man was an out and out Cork legend. Teddy Mac was the only man in history, to win two senior all Ireland medals in the one year. Due to fact that the duel player is now obsolete, that is something that'll never happen again.

Of course his championship debut with the hurlers was in the 1986 all Ireland final, the day we shocked Galway and the rest of the country and it was the day that Tom Cashman told the lord mayor of Galway (RIP John Mulholland) to have a look at that! Thanks for everything you did for Cork Teddy and may the great man RIP.

It was happening to us year after year since 2006 as well. It was Brian Cody and the Limerick team of recent years that brought hurling down this road imo. We were forced to adapt to this changing landscape unfortunately.

I'm sure someone might do a double again. It'll be one of either Cork, Galway or Dublin, but hopefully it'll be Cork! As i just said in another post the modern day championship structure has rendered the dual player obsolete sadly.

What other players have come closest to matching Teddy’s double?

I’m not sure why Denis Walsh doesn’t get recognised more because he was an unused sub in one of the finals, presumably he still got medals for both codes.

Sean Og came very close in 99. Who knows what could have happened if Brian Corcoran had continued playing football that year.

Alan Kerins I believe played both finals for Galway in 01 but lost the hurling.

Of course there’s the brilliant Cork ladies teams of the last 15 years with some doing the double several times.

    Any others?

Not sure on the loss of Ben O'Connor tk the rugby would be..seems a real hothead who could be sent off in every game..

Denis Walsh really should have had a medal in football in 1990 as well. The rules at the time stated that non playing substitutes were not entitled to a medal though. I'm of the opinion that we would have beaten Meath in 1999 if Colin Corkery and Steven O'Brien were playing! With regards to Alan Kerins he was an important member of the hurling squad, but from what i can recall he was a bit part player with the Galway footballers.

    Removal Friday 4-6 in Glanmire.

    Funeral Saturday 11am. Glanmire

That removal is going to go on for hours and hours, expect Glanmire to come to a complete standstill.

One of those cases where we will remember where we were when we heard this truly shocking news. Loved watching him for club, Imokilly & county in both codes. He could’ve made it at any sport he turned his hand to. Travel on well Teddy agus go raibh maith agat ó chroí. Condolences to his family at this awful time for them.

Liam Currams won all ireland hurling with Offaly in 1981 and a losing all ireland football medalist also in 1981

Kerins only took up football at college, was a massive surprise when he was brought into the football squad, but, was on the team for both semi final and final. Didn't really contribute a whole amount and think he was substituted in both, ironically won the football despite being underdogs and lost the hurling when favourites and a much better hurler than footballer. AFAIK he did win club all Irelands in both.

Teddy was a great dual player, one of may favourite players in either code. Rare to see any player as good under a high ball and seemed to hang in the air forever. His double achievement is highly unlikely to be repeated, it's possible some county might do the double again, but, unlikely that any player will play in both. May he rest in peace.

Liam Currams won a Hurling All Ireland in 1981 and Football All Ireland in 1982.

He played in both finals in 1981.

My memories of Kerins is that he wasn't really that great a footballer at all, just was very fast so he was good at carrying the ball.

Walsh,Corcoran and Sean Og were all involved on panels in double appearances but they all more or less got the run around in Football finals although they excelled in the Hurling

Teddy was different in that he had about an equal part to play in both successes though was seriously good in the 89 final.

His legacy was the double but in fairness to him he would have been an icon even if that never happened.

Anyone under 30 are almost mesmerised by hom catching a ball as it doesn't happen as much now.

His magnificence in the late 80s fielding a ball from the air and scoring was glorious.

    RIP.

Teddy really will always be synonymous with a golden era of Cork gaa. That era for the hurlers from 1999 to 2006, and 2007 to 2012 for the footballers were special too, but in those years from 1987 to 1993 we were very strong in both codes. The footballers probably should have won more all Irelands than they did, but we were very unlucky in both 1988 and 1993.

Of course Teddys career ended on bit of a low note in that infamous defeat to Limerick in 1996, but he had one hell of a career in fairness. He was very pro Frank and pro county board with regards to the strikes, but everyone is entitled to their opinion. As i said earlier the man is total and utter out and out Cork legend.

Was Teddy McCarthy himself not part of one of the management teams the players turned against? Hard to expect he'd be anti-county board since that body appointed the management.

The absence of tributes from the leaders of the strikes has been notable. The war goes on it seems.

Definitely won't be on TG4 as they don't have championship. Can't find RTE's fixtures or GAA Go for next weekend.
