Up to Wimbledon last year he had a strong start to 2022, but, has barely played since, so no surprise his ranking has fallen off a cliff. Murray and Thiem both struggled a while before going off tour so had very little points to defend. If any player basically misses a full year of the tour (bar a few false start comebacks) then their ranking will plummet. If there was any way Nadal come have played the FO he would have, so the injury he has must be very serious and potential career ending.

I have less than no interest in watching Sabalenka playing anyone - I really find her most unlikeable as a player. For that reason I'm hoping (but not expecting) she'll get beaten. Having her in the final would actually ruin it for me.

Unfortunately I'm going to miss the other semi, but I'll record it and try to avoid spoilers (although I'm sure we can all guess the result there as well!).

I had never heard of Haddad Maia, but I like her play a lot (plus she's a fellow leftie).

    Definitely rooting for Alcaraz tomorrow!

Sabalenka there for the taking for Muchova now, which I wouldn't have a problem with as I've had enough of Sabalenka's grunting and screaming every time she hits the ball, just no need for it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,755 ✭✭✭lbunnae

Great match there , sabalenka blew it and not for the first time. As an aside that's two commentators this week that said sabalenkas forehand is as fast as Alcaraz , that is very far from the truth , I've seen both live.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,755 ✭✭✭lbunnae

She's not the only culprit but my god she is one of the worst. Not a nice style to watch either , she hit over 50 unforeced errors

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,165 ✭✭✭hayrabit

yeah, that Chris Evert's full o' sheet - Sabalenka's forehand and how fast it is 😏 seriously doubtful that she's able to hit it (and given her competition, i reckon Sabalenka has far more chances to smash one than what her male counterparts would've) faster than most blokes on the tour

not good hard enough to get to final anyhow - pity

I really enjoyed both women’s semi finals, delighted the Belarusian banshee is gone, I had the volume muted as I can’t be listening to her shrieking and find Chris Evert poor as a co commentator. Also her butchering of Muchova’s name was very annoying. There’s a facility on the Wta website whereby when you click on the players name they themselves pronounce their name so there’s no excuse for not getting it right.

I love Muchova’s style of play and it’s great to see her back to her best but it looked to me like she was limping at times in the final set so fingers crossed she’s able to give Iga a match in the final.

Iga looked to be feeling the pressure today but managed to steady the ship and make it true in straight sets but she will have to serve a lot better in the final.

Haddid Maia is a dogged fighter and has had a brilliant tournament but I’m glad Iga was the winner. I know Haddid Maia was found to have no significant fault when her sample tested positive but she still served a doping suspension of ten months and I find it very strange that it’s never mentioned.

Bit disappointing that the most anticipated match of the tournament starts at 1.45 today when most won't be able to watch. I suppose it's only fair to follow the halves schedule pattern, but it's still disappointing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 714 ✭✭✭al87987

It's only an extra few hours rest and they all got a day off yesterday and will have one tomorrow.

Ridiculous to have the biggest match of the year so far take place in the middle of the afternoon when they could have easily scheduled it for tonight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,175 ✭✭✭Augme

It's more than a few hours tbf. A night match at the semi-fnal stages of a GS would be ridiculous and very unfair on that pairing.

    John McEnroe on commentary 🙄😡

What a way to break him

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,165 ✭✭✭hayrabit

was gonna have a bet on Alcaraz, but he was only 4/9

wasn't sure what the odds would be, and i wasn't expecting such a disparity in the prices, but i reckon any Djokovic fans woulda been rubbing their hands seeing he was 7/4 at start of match! ....looks even bigger now 😂 20/23 Alcaraz , 9/10 Novak are prices atm

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,627 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

Alcaraz finally gets a break over the line.

I feel like this match is slowly turning in his favour - just in time for me to have to go out to play a game - my timing is appalling 😭

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,165 ✭✭✭hayrabit

some brilliant dropshots by Carlitos here - gr8 to see

likely winner of this match will win final comfortably - don't even know who's in other semi, but in comparison, most of what's been on show from t'other half has been reet mediocre compared to these two lads

    honn Carlos !!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,544 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

    One set all 😎

No real way of telling where this'll go though. Right now I'd favour Alcaraz, but it's too close to call. Djokovic clearly surprised by how many balls are coming back to him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,761 ✭✭✭Floppybits

Djokovic has broken Alacraz. Alacraz concedes a game to allow medical treatment for his calf.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,218 ✭✭✭✭josip

Alcaraz no longer moving freely. I think he's done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,957 ✭✭✭dominatinMC

Alcaraz clearly injured now. What was setting up to be an epic is now done.

Djokovic is going too easy on Alcaraz here. He should be making him move or put the balls into parts of the court to make Alcaraz move for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,175 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

    Well this is thoroughly depressing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,165 ✭✭✭hayrabit

what a damp squid that was :(

    honn Novak !

Don't agree Alcaraz clearly injured, was going toe to toe with him before that.

And that should #23 in the bag for Djoko. I'd give Zverev a small chance of beating him in the final but Ruud none. Swiatek would probably give him more of a match tbh.

Alcaraz's first two slams of the year both ruined by injuries, but in very different ways.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,900 ✭✭✭Girly Gal

So the old guard will carry the day, always felt Djokovic would do it when it came down to it. Until Alcaraz beats Djokovic at a slam we cannot really say the baton has been passed on the next generation. Barring injury hard to see Djokovic being beaten in the final or at Wimbledon even, so another tilt at the Grand slam is likely at the USO. Djokovic is still the man to beat at slam level and with the possible exception of Alcaraz ( who's still a little short) there's no one really worthy of challenging him at the moment.

some folks on here can't recognise a joke when they see one !! 😂

"The youth of today" - always a good ironical one that 👁️‍🗨️

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,957 ✭✭✭dominatinMC

If anything he was on top, had more break point opportunities, was getting into Djokovics service games easily, etc. Was opening the shoulders right before the injury.

Pity, had the potential to be a classic. But, conditioning is all part of the game, and Djokovic (even at 36) is still on top in that regard.

Hard to see past him for #23 now.

Did Alcaraz pick up an injury or was it cramp?

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 15,034 Mod ✭✭✭✭whiterebel

It seemed to be cramp. Started in his hands and went into his arms and legs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,357 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

    ?

Ah I am sure they will have a few more good battles over the next couple of years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,165 ✭✭✭hayrabit

if it's good enough for Del Boy.... i'll malapropize away :pac:

won't be too many 'years to come' for me; what with Nolo being 36..... will hope for sure Le Spaniard beats Djoko a few times before t'Serb retires 🤗

doubt many care who wins this second semi match - not exactly household names these two 😛

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,385 ✭✭✭Jack Daw

There are only a couple of tennis player at any one time that tend to be household names.

Ruud has been in 2 grandslam finals already Zverev in 1 and he's n Olympic Gold medallist, ATP finals winner.

    They're hardly nobodies in fairness.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,627 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

Well there's my lovely Friday night in with an epic tennis classic gone up in smoke!! 🙄

I feel very sorry for Alcaraz, whether it's inexperience, or nerves, or whatever - that's an awful way to crash out of a grand slam. And he just looked like a rabbit in headlights, didn't seem to know how to deal with it really.

I have no doubt it'll make him all the stronger in the long run, though.

    What a shame!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,175 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

Not surprised Casper won but am a little surprised by how comfortable it was. Zverev is just coming back from a major injury and is notoriously rubbish against top 10 players in 5 sets anyway. Unfortunately I think the final is going to be about as competitive.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,544 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

Lordy, women's final is into final set. Swiatek very rattled and just broken.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,358 ✭✭✭forumdedum

Yes, this is why I don't watch Tennis anymore.

Excellent final, lots of ebbs and flows to it. Great win by Swiatek, there were times in the second and early in the third set where she was being completely outplayed and looked done for but she managed to grind out the win.

4 majors at the age of 22 and unlike Barty and Osaka she's seems to have real hunger to win many more which is good for the womens game.

  • Registered Users Posts: 583 ✭✭✭iffandonlyif

I’ve long given up on women’s tennis. Being up a break of serve in the final set and then having your serve broken twice in succession to lose the match is just really poor stuff. Nice to see someone capable of winning multiple grand slams, though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,175 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

Heard a quote from Ruud earlier saying that no matter what happens tomorrow it's been a good two weeks for him.

    🤦‍♂️

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,957 ✭✭✭dominatinMC

I recall him saying more or less the same thing last year before his final with Nadal. And I'll be expecting a similar outcome today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,275 ✭✭✭hawley

Djokovic drops serve and is down by 2-0 in first set. Looks like this could be tougher than people thought

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,544 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

Ruud playing really well so far, but also getting help from Djoko who's off his game. The match will change when Djoko clicks into gear, just a matter of when.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,275 ✭✭✭hawley

Still not playing well. Is getting into trouble on every service game. If he wins the first set, should win easily.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,275 ✭✭✭hawley

Looks to have taken control now. Be interesting to see if Ruud is able to fight back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,432 ✭✭✭✭MisterAnarchy

Its all over, a sense of inevitability about it.

Djokovic could be winning this at the age of 40 because the newer generation are rubbish.

All he has to do is turn these matches into a war of attrition and the new guys fold, they are all weak mentally.

1 rule for Djokovic wasting time, and a different for the others. Crowd is the same for all players all tournament and he's getting preferential treatment from the refs 2 days after strict enforcement of rules for an injured player. Nonsense
