I tune out between the grand tours this time of year. I'm full on during the classics so it's nice to have a break.

Amazed sam was anywhere near the finish there

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,265 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

Yeah. Stuck with them all on a very steep kicker but didn’t have the legs to beat some classic specialists. Encouraging enough I’d say as the likes of Groenewegen and plenty of others were dropped

A really promising effort there & only died last 150m.

All in for tomorrow I imagine now.

Hopefully the fact he tried is a sign his confidence is back as well as legs.

Derek Gee signs a 5yr contract with Israel, looks like he may have named his price after the giro.

He was on the wrong wheel too - it looked like the jump once he realised Laporte was goosed was the effort too much.

Not great for Sam there. Beaten by Laporte and looking at the finish he deviated quite a bit so relegation very likely.

Immediately when he went I thought it's too early.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,728 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Bora bossed the lead out but he didn't have the legs and probably would be lower than 2nd if he didn't box out a few.

    Relegation very likely.

Yeah seems to be lacking in raw speed at the moment. Positioning is rarely a problem as his leadout is top notch but it's worrying for the Tour.

Ya Bora looked great but Sam couldn't finish. I'm afraid I wouldn't be considering him for the tour based on his performance this year.

He is went about 250m from the line so should have been able to hold speed for that distance.

Poor sprint. Mightn’t be relegated but he must have thought he only had to beat Groenewegen and didn’t think of anything else.

So Sam gets relegated for deviating across Groenewegen who got relegated for deviating across before that.

He certainly doesn’t make it easy to try and justify his exclusion from big races to the doubters

edit: Groenewegen was actually relegated for cutting across after Sam cut him off but still a stupid move

The way he timed his form and turned it on for the Vuelta last year gives me a bit more hope that he's on the right track to step up when it counts at the Tour. I was very pessimistic last year after his 2021 injury and fall out with PL and his disastrous start to 2022. This season I'm a bit more optimistic that he's just finely tuning his form and not too bothered by results at warm up races. That's the fanboy in me speaking though. I'd much prefer to see him consistent from the start of the season.

Jonas looked absolutely bolloxed at the end there.

    Some ride from Bjerg

GC contenders in the Dauphine are very luck that Brian Smith is confined to a studio somehwere, rather than in a car at the race as he'd probably mow them down. He's not a happy man..

Vingegaard wins today's stage having been effectively gifted 30 seconds by most of the other contenders just looking at each other. They're not going to get that time back over the next few stages.

I see Eddie is down for the Tour of Slovenia now. No Pog there this year. The WT teams doing it are UAE, Bora, Bahrain and Jayco. One big climbing stage so you’d expect a decent overall result from him all going well

Looks like they are sending a reasonable support team too - Mezgec is there to look after Groenewegen but all the other riders are quite "climby". Only problem is that there are two lumpy stages beforehand where breakaways would need to be managed so as not to let someone get too much of a GC advantage with only one mountain stage to pull it back. I've heard he's down for Tour de Pologne too, on the run up to the Vuelta.

After his Giro exploits, Ben Healy is now ranked 20th in the UCI World Rankings (though his 4th in LBL netted him almost the same points as the Giro). Ireland are currently ranked 16th.

Nice. How many riders does that get us for the Worlds, do you know?

If Ireland held their top 20 position for the next 11 days, then CI could send a six rider team.

Best we drop down a bit to save the embarrassment of explaining we don't have 6 pros.

Ah lads. A bit of enthusiasm. 6 riders at the worlds would be great for Ireland. It’s a punchy course, so anything can happen.

Unfortunately too punchy for Bennett but not enough for Healy or Dunbar.

and even then they’ll have to fight CI to get their 50 quid Ryanair flight to Glasgow reimbursed

Pretty decent haul of points from Rory Townsend as well considering his team are one of the smallest UCI Pro level teams and don't get invited to GTs, or any big one-week stage races or one-day races.

We’re also 15th in the Olympic rankings (end in October) which would get 2 spots in the road race (one of which could enter ITT too)

We’re currently 40th in the women’s rankings which would get one spot in the road race. We’ve only ever had one entrant in the Olympics before so that would be great to see

On the track the women’s pursuit team is almost guaranteed to qualify already. That allows 2 of those 4 into the madison, and one of the 4 into the omnium too
