Dungarvan is the Irish example: two terminal roundabouts plus five intermediate ones along a 3 km stretch of road. Despite the name, N25 around Dungarvan was never really a bypass, more of a relief-road for the town.

This scheme is further from Foxford than N25 is from Dungarvan, and national routes are under much more planning protection than they used to be, which should prevent new junctions springing up.

I really don't understand why the proposed Foxford bypass is not extended to meet the N26 on the east of Foxford. Seems like a wasted opportunity to kill two birds with one bypass.

It's good to see the upgrade of the N26 from Ballina to Foxford appears to be moving ahead of the Foxford bypass in the road upgrade pecking order.

The N26 upgrade is proceeding to route options selection stage later in the summer, while the Foxford bypass, one of Eamon Ryan's pet projects, is still stuck at the strategic assessment stage.

Tender out for topographical survey for Foxford-Mount Falcon.

Has much been published about what's proposed here?

The entire N26 needs to get done ASAP. The recent tragic accident should never happen again.

Not much detail is available marno. My best guess is that Mount Falcon to Foxford will be a largely online upgrade to type 1 SC, perhaps done as 2-3 minor works projects. I would love to see a more ambitious approach though.

Tender has been published for consultants to take the N58 Foxford bypass through phases 1-4. That's according to the council, I can't find it on etenders.

    Latest from the council:

N26 Foxford to Mount Falcon: Options selection will conclude during Q2 2025 with preliminary design and environmental assessments commencing thereafter.

N58 Foxford Transport Project (bypass): Consultants will be appointed in Q4 2024 to provide technical and environmental support to the project. Project appraisal, feasibility and options selection will progress throughout 2025.

    From Darragh O'Brien:

I confirm that the N26 Foxford to Mount Falcon project received approval to progress the scheme to route option selection in July 2023. Following on from this, Mayo County Council prepared and tendered a brief for the provision of technical adviser services. The technical advisers were appointed in February 2024. A virtual public consultation was held between 13 November and 2 December 2024 to aid in the development of options. Work is continuing on the selection of assessment of potential options with an anticipated selection of a preferred route in late 2025. I agree with Senator Duffy regarding the N26 being the gateway to the north west. The Senator makes a good point on the importance of that route, the N26. It is important that we upgrade it to national standard and I thank the Senator for raising that matter.
