Hi all I am a newbie here. Does anyone know why so many using Adverts dont have any feedback even though they have sold items and are members for several years. Is there some kind of scam going on?

Hi, not sure if you had this answered, but go to sell and when you have to pick a category, click search and choose “wanted”. Do the rest like a normal ad :)

Old enough post, but I just saw it.

I don't know the answer, but I've sold a few things, and most people do leave feedback, but plenty just don't bother. So I have been a member for years, and still don't have that much feedback (100% positive though as buyer and seller).

In short it may be a scam, but it is possible they are legit.

Might seem like a small world problem. But my dog chewed one of the legs on my table and ripped the stuffing out of the chairs. Don't have the money to replace rn. I love adverts and have bought, sold and mainly posted free adds over the years. 451 positive feedback. 0 negative. So I'm.on the hunt for a free table and chairs. The second an add is posted the same fe**ers or new users have requested and then I see the free items for sale on Facebook. I'm obsessed the last week. Don't even care what it looks like, I can up cycle. These vultures are driving me crazy..are there no rules on adverts where for example... A person who created an account only today has requested 47 items.

Have you brought this to Adverts attention? Not much really much point complaining here. Facebook have groups which do free for people in need with limits on how much you can take.

    Hi Folks,

I'm currently selling an item on Adverts and there's a new account buyer who has no feedback, no comments etc who wants to buy. Normally I'd be wary of such a buyer but everyone has to start somewhere I guess. What I'm wondering is this. Is there a safest method of payment for an item (it's several hundred Euro in this case). Paypal would be out for the likelihood they could request a refund. Cash is possible I guess, though I'd worry about counterfeit notes. Would Revolut be the best way? Or just steer clear of a buyer like this.

    Many thanks.

I would go with cash or revolut.

I would personally go with Revolut transfer, I have done a lot of transactions similar over the last year or two and haven't had any issues using it.

Just make sure that you accept the transfer before you hand over the item, sometimes if its a new person sending you money you have to go into the app and accept. Other than that you should be fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,710 ✭✭✭blackbox

À bank transfer should be fine too. Just make sure the money is in your account before handing over the item.

    Cash all day long

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,584 ✭✭✭greasepalm

I use cash and PayPal if posting and tracked and insured if expensive , never got into Revolut.

Thanks for all the advice folks, it's much appreciated.

Unsure what to do in this situation, I sold an item on adverts.ie I posted the item without tracking as requested by buyer as it is cheaper. Buyer says it never arrived. I have proof of postage but not of delivery.

Do I have to refund the buyer ? I can't really afford to lose my item and the cost of postage, and I have no way to know if they are telling the truth.

Ill know for future to always send registered :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,344 ✭✭✭death1234567

Buyer requested no tracking so he could claim it wasn't received and try to scam you. Obvious scam is obvious.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,219 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

how did the buyer pay ?

item not received is a common scam and if PayPal was used over a value of around 30 euro then paypal will request prove of delivery

    They paid via PayPal :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,219 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

Nothing you can do sadly they will open a dispute and get a refund, just follow what PayPal say

    it’s a hard lesson learned

Did look at the buyers feedback score..

Look at his profile, you might see other items they bid on,, it might give you some idea of who you are dealing with..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 690 ✭✭✭questionmark

I think they might have paid via family/ friend on Paypal as I asked to pay that way or cover fees , and I got the full amount with no fees ducted.

The buyer has a small amount of feedback, all positive

I'm not sure if they are a scammer or not. I'm more concerned if I should morally refund them. Maybe the item did get lost and from there point of view I can only prove I posted something on the date :s

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,219 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

A very small amount of items actually get lost in the post, get the buyer the check with neighbours and any safe place it may have been left

if the buyer is pulling a fast one it is easy to get PayPal to switch friends and family to goods and services claiming it was a mistake.

wether you should refund the buyer by choice is up to you

First rule of Fight Club... Never use PayPal!!! It's a scam... everything related to PayPal is a scam. If someone asks you to pay or be paid with PayPal... It's a scam!

It absolutely is... It has never protected me against dodgy sellers and is set up to allow scammers to gain and regular customers to be fucked over. It offers no benefit over a credit card or other regular payment methods...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,026 ✭✭✭0ph0rce0

How long ago did you post it?

Maybe he just hasn't received it yet. If it's a day or 2 then I'd be saying wait till the end of the week.

Sometimes post and packets get missorted bounce around offices for a few days until someone finally sends it to the correct delivery unit..

If it's over a week or two then fair enough maybe something's up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 937 ✭✭✭mondeoman72

If they paid family and friends, I dont think they can do a charge back but as a precaution, I would sever any ability for paypal to hit you. Dont leave any cash in paypal or block the card you used to finance it. Of course, you can never use paypal again if it does happen, but PP are known for siding with the buyer.

It is indeed a known scam somebody complains "not delivered", and you cannot prove otherwise. Maybe you will get lucky and the buyers neighbour has it or it will appear yet.

Dont bother contacting adverts, nothing they can do, they are only an advertising site.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,219 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

It’s protected me many times as a buyer and also as a seller, if someone knows how to use PayPal it’s perfectly fine and if you don’t like it then that is fine also but to say PayPal is a scam is a bit over kill

they provide 180 day buyer protection, they paid postage for returns for years if you knew how to claim it and plenty of boards users availed of that service and it was very handy for sports direct back to the U.K. among other merchants

i got shafted by paypal a few years ago and id never use it again

always chose to side with the buyer

    revolut from now on

  • Hi All

Does anyone know how one would get in touch with the adverts team in relation to an account issue.

It would seem that there is no one behind the contact us option.

Anyone notice the amount of older accounts being compromised lately on adverts?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 937 ✭✭✭mondeoman72

This is fact, but also my opinion and I do not speak for any group or organisation.

Everytime there is a data breach, details are leaked. Anybody that reuses the same email and password combination across the net is wide open to being hacked and identity theft.

The reason everyone is advised to regularly change passwords and vary passwords across sites is so that if one site is compromised, the scammers cannot use your details to log in elsewhere. Sadly, people dont bother and then when they are compromised, they blame everyone except themselves.

    Also, with the relentless cost cutting and outsourcing to the low cost economies and agencies, work and accesses are being sent out to contractors god-knows-where. They have access to info that is very sensitive and as the link below for electric ireland says;

"It said an employee of a company working on its behalf may have inappropriately accessed 8,000 residential customer accounts. Electric Ireland said this could lead to the potential misuse of personal and financial information."

The data breaches below have been declared. But nobody knows if this is accurate, or there is more than being admitted to. Do you regularly change your passwords? For handiness, do you use the same password in multiple places? If you do, be worried, be very worried, see these:

    Also:

    https://www.uswitch.com/mobiles/news/lyca-mobile-data-breach/

If you get hacked. The cause, and where it occured could be anywhere or anything. Even a virus on your PC harvesting your passwords. Dont blame any or some websites, sadly it is mostly not their fault.

    Hi there,

I am looking at buying a laptop on adverts and its 1700 Euro so I want to be very safe and protected.

The seller has 4k + postiive feedback and not one negative feedback. They also have a ton of history going back 6 years and over 100 items for sale.

They say they are a registered online business, can meet in person or it can be delivered, and can give a registered business receipt.

Now if they post it to me, registered business and receipt mean jack all if they are scammers. But the fact they have 4k+ positive reviews means they are legit, right?

I asked if they would do paypal goods and services payment and Id pay the 3.4% charge and they said as long as they get the same money, they are happy.

    Am I totally covered here?

    Thanks

My account has been hacked, I got an email today to notify me about an ad I placed (I didn't).

I edited the ad to advise others that it's not a real ad, then withdrew the ad, have contacted support at adverts, and changed my password.

If your account has been hacked, read the post 37, just up a bit. You need to change your passwords and also vary them. Normally this happens when you use the same password on multiple sites and one gets hacked.

Last Saturday (2/12) I ordered a battery and a charging cable for the PSP.

Then it arrived this Sunday (9/12). Before I received it, I'd update the seller every day that it hadn't arrived. When I received it, I forgot to update the seller. Then today, the battery and/or charger started to break down. Keep in mind, it is December in Ireland, and the seller decided to ship 2 electronics with nothing but an envelope to protect them from the rain.

The products that came also weren't the same as the ad (the ad had a black, shorter end cable, i receive a white one that didnt fit right, the battery was a different brand)

I decided to message the seller, but then I found out I got blocked. I left a report on their profile, but I'm wondering if I can get a refund or any reimbursement in any way? (I payed via Family&Friends on PayPal)

Note: The ad falsely addvertised the products, they weren't properly packaged, they arrived late, I got blocked before the seller even knew I received the items, the ad listed them as "Brand new", the description said it was compatible with my device.

Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Summary: I got faulty item, it was listed wrong and badly packaged, I got blocked, I reported the user.

Why on earth do people still pay strangers via Family and Friends? You'll get no recompense from PayPal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,126 ✭✭✭NewbridgeIR

Never use Paypal Friends & Family. Sometimes sellers just want it so that they won't be charged a Paypal fee.

If that's the case, you're better off paying them extra to cover the fee but make sure it is sent for "goods/services". They then get the exact amount of the sale price.

Costs more but you have some chance of getting your money back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,584 ✭✭✭greasepalm

I use PayPal and ask Friends and Family as people can check my 100% feedback.

Contact Admin of Adverts and give them info of what you bought and received.

Not packed or wrapped well is their issue not yours.

Did you read their feedback first ?

If you want to send me info on a pm i can look at it as a third party if you cannot?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4 ACC21

I read the users feedback and they had 300+ positive with no negative, so I thought they were trustworthy, but I guess not. Also, quick question, is there a way to contact Adverts support in other ways that isn't just reporting the user?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4 ACC21

Also, if you dont mind could you look into it? I cant contact the seller in any way because I'm blocked, and if there's even a slim chance of me being able to get my money back, or any sort of compensation, I'd appreciate it very much. I can send you a PM with some details later on if you're happy to do so. It's ok if you don't want to or if you can't, thank you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 937 ✭✭✭mondeoman72

Email support@adverts.ie Best and only way to get in touch with them.

Compensation? From who? and why? Adverts is an online portal people use to advertise. If you see an advert in the irish times and buy something which turns out to be iffy, who do you think is responsible? I hope you would not expect the Irish times to be responsible.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4 ACC21

I didn't word that question correctly, I just kinda mean a refund, even if it's only a partial refund. Thanks for the email too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 450 ✭✭Deirdre5

Looks like someone hacked an old adverts account and advertised a gaming wheel. I had alerts on for this gaming wheel as I wanted it for ages and didn't wanna pay full whack. Anyway he said he'd post it to me and to pay through PayPal. He had positive feedback and previous ads. Anyway the PayPal name was foreign which rang alarm bells but I thought sure there's loads of foreigners now in Ireland. Paid through friends and family cos it was the automatic option on PayPal. Mad how as soon as I clicked send for 150€ I instantly had the worst gut feeling. Just knew it was a scam literally as soon as I clicked send. Anyway long story short aib and PayPal don't wanna know. Seller not answering. That's me taught a harsh lesson I suppose. Just never had any issues with adverts before was actually singing their praises when I moved house and bought so much stuff on there. Won't be using it again feel very hard done by. Didn't even cross my mind someone had hacked an old account

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,178 ✭✭✭ConcertKing

This has been going on months for concert tickets on there with loads getting scammed by old accounts being hacked.

How Adverts hasn't sent out an email giving every user a few weeks to reset their passwords on their accounts or they'll be shut down I'll never know as scamming is absolutely rampant on there and something seriously needs to be done!!!

there is something weird going on . There’s a guy/ person , calling themselves unknow 5763, has an epiphone hummingbird and hard case apparently, up for sale. Won’t give an address, and seems to be effing off anyone who’s making an offer . Has he just put the ad up so he can insult people and start rows?
