If only there were cars available that weren’t SUVs?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,850 ✭✭✭growleaves

Ultimately the plan is to ban petrol cars though, and supposedly relatively soon, yes?

Yet where is the preparation for that. Where are the charging stations, reinforcement of Eirgrid, new electric trains, new public transort routes in the countryside etc.?

The whole thing just seems unreal to me.

The easy part is getting angry at SUV owners and painting murals of Greta Thunberg. The hard part is re-purposing infrastructure and expanding it so that we can transition to a less-polluting way of life in a way that is practical and without sacrificing the ability to get around.

Plenty of saloon cars about with bigger or similar engines as SUV's,are those next on the list?

Slashing tyres doesn't do much for the environment either.

The destruction of the family unit from all aspects of media and society is the biggest mistake in the history of our species and will eventually lead to anarchy.

  • Registered Users Posts: 170 ✭✭WheelieKing

Deflating a tyre could potentially lead to an accident if the person drives off unaware and should be prosecuted to the full full extent of the law.

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,939 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

Have you been paying attention? All those things are happening. I’m not sure why you’d expect Government to be providing fuelling facilities for private vehicles, mind you.

Actually, it’s not that easy to take action like this. It takes considerable courage to accept the risk of ending up with a criminal conviction.

Like I said, we need more deflation.

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,939 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

Yes, yes they are next on the list.

Isnt it funny how there was no photo of the slashed tyres?

  • Registered Users Posts: 562 ✭✭✭Yeah Right

I'm usually on your side with a lot of things, but your take on this one is indefensible. It takes courage to accept the risks that come with breaking the law, does it?***

If someone said that to you about cars breaking red lights or speeding, you'd throw a fit (rightly so). This isn't a minor inconvenience......this could be a missed hospital appointment, or late getting the kids from creche (€10 every 5 mins in our place....have you got a spare €120 for me while I wait for assistance?), or, god forbid, being sacked for showing up late for work. It's a royal pain in the hole. It's the equivalent of locking your bike to someone else's, then wondering why they're getting pissed because you caused them to be delayed, like that's no big thing.

***It does, however, take considerable courage to risk getting a a smack of a hurley if I catch you out doing anything to my car. Anything. I use that to ferry my baby around, if I catch you (not you personally AJR) interfering with it there'll be an altercation. You mess with my family's safety, you best be prepared to have me mess with yours.

They could be doing anything to the car, including burning it out or messing with the brakes. If I caught you, you'd have a hard time explaining it to the guards with your jaw wired shut, followed by 4 months of all the soup and jelly you can eat.

This we can agree on. I'd wager serious money that the slashed tyres were deflated, and belonged to someone who was misconstruing the two.

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,939 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

I’d say the misconstruing was fairly deliberate, if that’s not a contradiction.

  • Registered Users Posts: 562 ✭✭✭Yeah Right

I've learned to give people the benefit of the doubt. Hanlon's razor applies here "never attribute to malice, that which can be adequately explained by stupidity". I've met far for stupid people than I have malicious ones, thank christ.

    Unpopular opinions:

Sandals with socks is really comfortable

Going to the beach is crap, sand is brutal

Any steak cooked to anything less than Medium isn't enjoyable. The steak gets cold ridiculously quickly

Tomatoes on burgers is stupid. Same with fried eggs.

In fact, burgers have gone to the dogs. The whole point is being able to take a bite out of it. If it's 17 inches tall with a knife going through it to hold it together, what's the point? Bigger burgers should be wider, not taller.

Guinness is fairly bland, as far as stouts go

If this was Twitter, you'd get the 'Oooh you're hard' David Brent gif in response. Unless you're going to be staying up all night every night peering out the window, you'll find it hard to get out with the hurley in time to meet up with the lads. But thanks for absolutely confirming my point about risks involved.

I don't think anyone is going to be late for their creche pickup at 8am in the morning. We both know that the far more likely use case for a Churchtown SUV at 8am is the school run, probably a short 1-2km trip that could easily be walked or cycled, but yeah, the pregnant wife or sick granny stories will always sound much more interestingn.

Funnily enough, my only flat tyre in living memory was on the one day that a family member had a hospital procedure scheduled. I couldn't get the nuts off, so a taxi did the necessary instead. No drama, just a slight PITA.

Downgrade the family as the foundation of society and replace the state as the moral centre

No one* should go from leaving cert directly to college.

One year off for community service (part-time, paid) and to research college courses.

A minimum of 10% of college course places should be reserved for those who apply through essay/portfolio and interview, not just points. This would help alleviate the pressure of the leaving. You shouldn't need 445 points to study drama at Trinity, for example.

*People can apply, but it should be very rare

Your point was about the risks of getting caught breaking the law. Mine was about getting caught by the property owner, which is completely different. Don't try to pass it off as if you were talking about that all along. You'll also note the qualifier "if" in my earlier post, I'm not saying I will catch them, but if I do......

You don't know what people are getting up to or what errands they have to run. You've no idea who needs a bigger car or for what purposes. The "driving the kids 300 yards" story is just as interesting as any other presumption you're laying at others' feet. A more cynical man than I would suggest that a 2km trip takes less than 10 mins and produces less pollutant than a smaller car doing a bigger journey, but you go ahead and keep blaming people for being the victims there, sure. Also, it's noteworthy that you only picked the creche element out of my post to counter. You are okay with people losing their job because some scumbag thinks their car is too big, then? Or missing a plane/train/appointment?

Funnily enough, my only flat tyre in living memory was on the one day that a family member had a hospital procedure scheduled. I couldn't get the nuts off, so a taxi did the necessary instead. No drama, just a slight PITA.

Would you have been able to do that with a partner, 3 kids, 4 separate drop off points in opposite directions, 2 buggies and all the baggage that comes associated with ferrying kids around?*** Or are you too busy justifying criminal activity while looking down on others from your high horse?

***For the record, yes, I'm aware it's possible to do all that using taxis, but at what cost? How much is 2 taxis gonna cost you and are you willing to fork it out cos some pinko champagne socialist thought it was a good idea to let all the air out of your tyres?

  • Registered Users Posts: 562 ✭✭✭Yeah Right

If 3000 people apply to do Drama and there are only 500 places, how do you whittle them down?

Aren't CAS points like bookie's odds? They fluctuate based upon the number of applicants/gamblers, I thought?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,688 ✭✭✭Flaneur OBrien

I fully agree with the war on SUV's. They're utterly ridiculous to have anywhere, but especially in a built up area like a city.

I think the problem here is that while the perpetrators may have admirable motives it’s a bit like attacking a smoker to stop cancer.

The oil companies would love this sort of thing. All the money they’ve pumped into climate denial and getting the blame put on the end user is paying off.

Wouldn’t be surprised if this lot are being funded, possibly without their knowledge, by Big Oil.

    Essay/portfolio/interview/audition.

There's many ways to guage a students "fit" into a course that is better than an arbitrary exam.

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,939 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

I’d suggest it’s more like throwing water on the smoker’s matches than attacking the smoker.

It’s not the only angle of the broader campaign. It would be fairly closely related to Just Stop Oil, so the chances of Big Oil funding are fairly slim. I’m not sure what funding the Tyre Extinguishers get or would need. Lentils are fairly cheap.

Absolute scum. Hopefully the perpetrators get the hospitalization they so richly deserve.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,688 ✭✭✭Flaneur OBrien

I know this is boards and there's a certain few that like playing the hard man here, but why should the perpetrators be hospitalised? And who should carry out their punishment beating? Should we start hospitalising anyone convicted of a crime while we're at it? What about speeding? A broken ankle maybe? Would a broken thumb fit the crime for shoplifting? Should we hire a separate department away from the guards to carry out these punishment beatings, or are they equipped enough? Or is it just the owners that can beat people up without charge from the gardai? What if the owner was an 87 year old woman? Would she be allowed force feed them tainted meat, for example, so they're still hospitalised?

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,429 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

It's a dangerous game. Never know what you're dealing with.

  • Registered Users Posts: 64 ✭✭JohnJoFitz

They could be hospitalized if the wrong or in this case I mean the right person caught them in the act. If I caught anyone at that with my car, they would get a toe in the hole that would send them over the nearest wall. I'd love to see one of these scumbags get a few well-deserved smacks.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,688 ✭✭✭Flaneur OBrien

And what do you think would happen to you? Or any other person that took the law into their own hands like that?

  • Registered Users Posts: 64 ✭✭JohnJoFitz

    Probably nothing.

You go damaging peoples property, you deserve what you get because you are a scumbag.
