Toyota 'Relax' warranty

Hi, had Yaris serviced with usual dealer and it transpired that the 'Oil Filter Assembly' needed to be replaced at a cost of almost €300.

Am I right in thinking that this should be covered under the 'Relax' warranty?

    Any thoughts appreciated.

Did they break it as I do not understand how it broke on it's own.

edit: Reading that again it doesn't make sense. I was wondering if you brought it in for a service and then they said the oil filter assembly is broke. It doesn't break on it's own so if they were at the car they obviously broke it.

Who am I to argue with them - it's a matter of trust, I suppose.

It did seem strange to me that a car with 50k km would develop such an issue.

It would also appear to be that the 'Relax' warranty only came into existence in Ireland in Sept 2022 and is activated 'on completion of a service carried out in accordance with the manufacturer-recommended service intervals for your vehicle at an Authorised Toyota Repairer'. I would take to mean that I am not covered.

May I ask are you mechanically qualified to state that it shouldn't break?

Sounds to me as if he sent the Yaris in for a service, and was charged €300, which would be about normal I think.

The 'Oil Filter Assembly Needed' would be on the invoice list as one of the service steps.

I just assumed it was new car when you said it had warranty. Did you buy it new or used as it has 50k on it now and if bought used the last person before this current garage may have messed it up.

I assume that this is the year warranty after a service that's being advertised regardless of the previous history of the car OP? Bought from your aunty etc.

The ad makes me chuckle, there's not a chance that they won't find something 'wrong' that needs to be replaced once they get their hands on you.

The 'Oil Filter Assembly' alone cost almost €300 and is most certainly not a standard service item.

The car was purchased used from the same dealer four years ago and serviced by them annually since then. The warranty in question is the Toyota 'Relax' warranty which applies to all cars serviced by a main dealer.

You definitely should fight that as they were always the ones at the car. I don't know the car so not sure what the oil filter assembly on that car looks like. But from previous cars I have owned something doesn't just break on it's own. And obviously wasn't broke before you brought it to them other wise it would have been leaking oil.

Yeah. the wisdom on Boards never ceases to amaze me.

Post the part number of what the €300 part is.

Just a thought, maybe they overtightened the oil filter cap and it warped and wouldn't seal, so they replaced the entire housing, which I presume includes the oil cooler, which would make sense of a €300 bill.

Can't see what else on that assembly would cost €300 regardless of how it happened or who was at fault but that does sound strange for a 50k mileage.

My error, the quote is for replacing the 'Oil Filter Assembly', including labour and all ancillary checks. The entire service bill is almost €500.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

He means the part number of the oil filter housing. Which Yaris is it? Like which engine and year of car.

He means post up the part number of the replaced part here so it can be determined what the cost of that part is and if it is a regular occurrence for it to be replaced

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 527 ✭✭✭dickdasr1234

    I gather that.

    Intervention: 01

Remove and replace oil filter assembly. Includes:- Replace engine oil and filter. Inspec, inspect, inspect...

The bill simply states: "Oil Filter Assembly, Repair/Replace connections" Gross €297.94

    ELEMENT SUB-ASSY, AI 21.04

    FILTER ASSY, OIL, L/ 10.91

    GASKET 1.67

    5W30 29.70

There is no itemised cost for the actual housing, never mind a part number.

The other items are non-related: wiper blades, spark plugs etc.

    Labour cost not itemised.

    2022 & 2023 for comparison

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,020 ✭✭✭Mefistofelino

Looks like the "Oil Filter Assembly Replace" heading is how the dealer summarises the labour element. All the parts ( including the Filter itself) are listed separately. The reason it's higher in 2023 is due to the increased labour for the greater number of parts that needed to be replaced .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

Yes as was said it looks like they just added the labour to oil filter assembly. So they never actually did break the oil filter housing. You never showed us last years receipt and if you did we would have seen the same line was used last year oil filter assembly. You knew it was there so why didn't you mention it. Why did you think they replaced it this year and not last year when it was written down last year as well?

Everything has gone up in price compared to last year.

€300 for Air Filter, Pollen Filter, wiper blades, brake fluid & spark plugs (which Toyota site STATES should last 100k miles+)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 631 ✭✭✭Chippy01

    2022 Minor or Intermediate Service

    2023 Major or Full Service.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 527 ✭✭✭dickdasr1234

    I REALLY DON#T KNOW WHY I DIDN'T MENTION IT.

PERHAPS IT WAS BECAUSE I DIDN'T LOOK AT LAST YEARS'S BILL UNTIL I THOUGHT TO CHECK IF LABOUR WAS ITEMISED (AS IT USED TO BE)?

PERHAPS IT WAS SIMPLY BECAUSE I AM AN ATTENTION-SEEKING CONSPIRACY THEORIST?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,020 ✭✭✭Mefistofelino

Read the bill again - the extra items over last years service cost an additional ~€130 to carry out. That's probably 1.5 - 2 hours at main dealer rates.

At this point, you should just call up the Service Manager at the Toyota dealer on Monday and have them break it all down for you. You might also consider whether main dealer servicing is cost- effective for a six year old Yaris - you're paying a premium on servicing in order to extend the original warranty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,386 ✭✭✭User1998

This is why you should avoid main dealers at all costs. I’d imagine all you really needed was oil and oil filter for around €100 in an independent mechanics but instead you were upsold to almost €500.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,337 ✭✭✭standardg60

Perhaps it was because you didn't have the level of wisdom you thought you did.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 527 ✭✭✭dickdasr1234

You have certainly lost me there!

We have established that the bill is inadequately itemised and that the labour costs appear to have been lumped in under the "replace Oil Assembly" heading which has leapt from €143 to €297.

The difference between the two totals is in the order of €300.

Your logic is quite beyond me.

To what do you attribute the €300 differential?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,020 ✭✭✭Mefistofelino

    Right.

The 2022 "inter" service covers an oil change and general inspection. The cost was broken down into €143 labour and €40 of parts.

The 2023 service included all of the same items as the 2022 service, plus replacing the airfilters, spark plugs, brake fluid etc. For this, the labour increased from 143 to 297 so an increase of ~ €150 .

The parts cost increased from 40 to 180. Part of this was due to inflation, but mainly because a lot more parts were required,
