The first 60 seconds of that interview are a babbling, incoherent mess. That's inescapable.

His lifetime documented stammer in other words?

Blubbering mess by other candidates hmm

Pence must be cognitively declining also.

Nobody has mentioned Biden's stammer, because it's not relevant. That's besides the point, as you well know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,165 ✭✭✭✭astrofool

It is relevant to making speeches which you seem to be using as a measure for cognitive decline (your partner in crime seems to have given up on fact based reality entirely at this stage).

Do you accept that some of the gaffes are likely related to a lifelong stammer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,729 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

"The first 60 seconds of that interview are a babbling, incoherent mess. That's inescapable."

They literally just did. "The point" here, as you well know, is juvenile ritual communal bonding between those struggling with the collapse of the Republican Party and the current trajectory of the election into a clear Democratic supermajority for 2024.

I think it's the other way around. Biden has gaffes, some of which happen to include his stammer.

But his stammer is not what makes the gaffe, it's just an incidental finding.

If Biden's stammer were the issue, then this thread would never have been created. It's because of the content of what Biden does and says -- including that mentioned in the thread title -- which has nothing to do with his stammer, whether it's involved in the gaffe or not.

Put another way, even if Biden had no stammer, the cognitive decline problem we're speaking of would remain exactly the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,729 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

Waffle. This thread was written in a desperate attempt to avert attention to Joe Biden because of the imminent collapse of the Republican party, and wishcasting a coup by 25th because he said "God Save the Queen, Man." It makes Mustardgate or Suitgate seem mature by comparison.

This thread was written in a desperate attempt to avert attention to Joe Biden because of the imminent collapse of the Republican party...

    No, it wasn't.

Not everything is about the Republican Party and the former president.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,729 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

    orly?

You couldn't open your own mouth in this thread without invoking Republicans.

It's a very valid point I made, though. If Donald Trump were making exactly the same gaffes, the same people defending Biden would weaponize those gaffes against Donald Trump. It would be utterly disingenuous to suggest otherwise.

Second, it's about the content of Biden's gaffes -- not his stammer.

The latest gaffe before this was when Biden started talking about building a railroad from the Pacific Ocean right across the Indian Ocean. Even he eventually recognized that he was talking nonsense:

We have plans to build a railroad from the Pacific all the way across the Indian Ocean. We have plans to build in—in Angola one of the largest solar plants in the world. I can go on, but I'm not. I'm going off-script. I'm going to get in trouble.

Now you might argue that this was a simple geographical gaffe.

The problem is the scale and frequency of these gaffes. If it were a relatively isolated incident, nobody would take note of it. It's the regularity of the gaffes and memory difficulties that alert many people to the conclusion that his age is catching up with his ability to perform the role.

And yes, I repeat, had Donald Trump made the same gaffe, you wouldn't be defending Trump. To the contrary, you would ridicule Trump to the highest degree. What I'm saying is that you should at least be consistent and ridicule both sides when warranted.

It's a very valid point I made, though.

    😂

The irony of this is hilarious, you want to gatecheck other posters to not mention republicans, it's not valid for thee but not me, IM allowed to mention Republicans etc. - WHILE lecturing hollow about 'being consistent.'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,165 ✭✭✭✭astrofool

So, you think the gaffes cause the stammer?

    Righto.

    Exit stage reality rapidash.

Go and say that to someone with a stammer and let us know how you get on.

Props to your latest incarnation being as singularly awful as your last one was.

The stammer is irrelevant. If Joe Biden had a broken leg or high blood cholesterol, it would similarly be irrelevant.

We're commenting on the words and actions of Joe Biden, criticisms of which would remain exactly the same ---- irrespective of whether he has a stammer or not.

Nobody said the word 'Republicans' is banned.

But people bringing in Trump and saying, "Look over here at what Trump said..", is irrelevant. Or similar tactics like that.

As I said, the people defending Biden and his gaffes would react 180 degrees if it were a Republican leader who did exactly the same gaffes.

That inconsistency is worth pointing out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,729 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

We're commenting on the words and actions of Joe Biden

What are your medical or psychiatric credentials to opine on what is and what isn't stammering? Who are you to refute any other layperson pointing out this is stammering?

"The physical act of stammering can be a tiny part of the experience. Growing up with a stammer, anticipating times when you'll need to talk, the negative responses, the ever-present expectation that you need fixing or need to breathe properly. Feelings of shame, embarrassment, anger, anxiety and fear. Frustration that saying one's name — the one thing that most people who stammer will find hard to say — will stymie your every encounter. The frustration of not being taken seriously. For many people who stammer it is this aspect of having a stammer which forms the greater part of the experience, and there are many people out there who swap words, avoid contact, keep silent, so that people don't know that they stammer."

You yourself keep criticising him when he says he's going to get in trouble for getting off script, ie. he will start stammering etc.

Alright, if you want to allege that, prove that. We had 4 years of trump, and TENS OF THOUSANDS of posts on Boards.ie about Trump. So if you think there is an inconsistency, I entreat you to prove that inconsistency. If that's too much bother for you then all you have is personal incredulity and counterfactual conjecture, which wasn't worth pointing out whatsoever.

Biden often completely loses his train of thought mid-sentence, and goes off on some inane rambling nonsensical word salad. I'm sorry, but that has nothing to do with having a stammer.

The man is simply not mentally fit to hold office. It's rather sad that people allow their politics/ideology to interfere with their ability to give an honest assessment of what they're witnessing.

For some to repackage all Biden's gaffes, memory lapses and so on, as just his stammer and stammer alone -- demonstrates precisely the point you make: how ideological conformity matters more than the truth.

This is what is called sophistry:

the use of clever but false arguments, especially with the intention of deceiving.

Give the man a break. We've all had brain freezes, brain fogs, absent moments, forgetfulness and said ridiculous things. If there was a mic in our face 24/7 the amount of BS recorded would be off the scale. And to be fair he didn't try overthrow democracy like Trump. His mistakes have been small fry in comparison.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 170 ✭✭WheelieKing

Why do people continue to bring up Trump in a thread about Biden?

Because it means avoiding, diverting and deflecting from an obvious reality facing the Democrat forerunner leading into the next election.

Everything becomes partisan. Even something as obvious as Biden's apparent loss of cognitive acuity.

This, as bad as it looks, is still not as bad as when he said Ireland beat the black and tans during his visit here. That was pretty bad - Obviously very easy to confuse the two.

He has to be struggling though - there is videos of him doing the rounds online where he has to guided physically into position during speeches and brought off again after a few words. The health cant be super.

Lots to criticise here, but “America First” did not belong to the American Nazi party. As an idea it goes back to WWI.

More specifically it’s best known for the America First Committee, which did have some prominent anti-Semites. It was popular with Communists too after Stalin’s 1939 pact with Hitler.

Despite the rise of Hitler and the Japanese expansion in Asia, Isolationism remained the most popular foreign policy among Americans. Until America was attacked by Japan.

How does this relate to Biden’s dementia?

I’ve nothing against Biden, but it’s clear he’s suffering from mental deterioration since before he became president. There’s too many incidents at this stage. Even if he never said “God Save the Queen”, the way he rambled on for minutes at the end of the “speech” was a sad indication of his condition.

Eh, because thats the choice facing America. He's the alternative.

As I said, harmless faux pas or overthrowing democracy - which is worse?

Biden doesn't have dementia. I'm going to disregard the rest of this since you've included that nonsense.

Do you honestly think Trump is much better? Thought he could overthrow election results, ok to store thousands of classified documents and boast about it.

They are 2 geriatrics, and there aren't exactly any rising stars ready to challenge them.

Thankfully US presidents these days are little more than figureheads and the real decisions are made by their advisors, with the President little more than doing the PR. Just look at all the international conferences. Deals hammered out by advisors, and the heads of state show up at the end to rubber stamp them.

Your first reply to this very thread was that, forget about Joe Biden's gaffes because, "Donald Trump is a literal Nazi".

If we're going to talk about including nonsense in posts, then it's a little ironic that -- only now -- you've decided that standards in facts matter.

Joe Biden doesn't have dementia, you're right. But your diversion to Trump and Nazism is equally as false.

Do you honestly think Trump is much better?

For the umpteenth time, the demerits of Joe Biden's cognitive faculties say nothing about Donald Trump.

You can be critical of Donald Trump -- indeed, you can condemn Donald Trump is the most extreme terms, but that is a wholly separate issue to Joe Biden's candidacy and mental acuity.

It's possible to be critical of both Donald Trump and Joe Biden. This isn't some childish competition where we need to engage in point scoring, where it's Manchester United versus Liverpool, where we must invest 100% into one candidate, lest we be accused of losing face. This isn't maturity.

Some people need to jettison aside this petty point scoring and assess an individual subject from an objective standpoint. Not a partisan standpoint, but an objective standpoint.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,900 ✭✭✭thomas 123

No just the aid of an ear piece. He did have a speech book in the dail, remember, he gave it a big kiss?

Look at it objectively - if any other 60+ let alone 80+ year old person was doing the things he was doing we would be asking are they impaired somehow. The US Gov is never going to come out and say their leader is not well.

Right lets try this one more time.

Joe Biden is the US president. He is the most watched, recorded and analysed person on the planet. He is watched and recorded where-ever he goes. Having watched him in Ireland, well over 90% of the time he was perfectly fine, which of course is ignored by you. He made a few faux pas. Like us all, except yourself who never made a mistake. The perfectly ok times are ignored by you, the occassional faux pas are highlighted and jumped on.

    Its tiresome. Move on.

Out of interest, who do you think would make a better president?

Read my posts. I'm not going to rehash them. I'll sumarize them though.

90% of the time he's fine.

He's a figurehead, as is most US presidents. There are more than enough checks and balances there.

Despite his moments getting on and off stage, he's been and continues to be a reasonably ok politician.

America is going reasonably in the right direction.

And despite brain freezes he's light years ahead of the dictatorial minded Trump. And at this stage I DO NOT CARE who it bothers that I mention Trump.

Biden was the least worst option in 2020 and will be again in 2024. And would be if he couldn't remember his own name, was in a wheelchair or bedbound!

If its possible to be critical of Trump why arent you?

Any objective analysis of your post history contradicts this entirse pretence and demonstrates a partisan standpoint.

The vast majority of your posts are unprompted criticisms of Democrats or defences of Republicans.

Unprompted criticisms of Republicans because of such actions as January 6th, or Trump harassment of sexual assault victim... nowhere to be seen.

If you want to go down the objective analysis route... then yes it is obvious you are posting here to score partisan points.

Biden has been making verbal gaffes for decades. This isnt even the first time he has used the phrase God Save the Queen in a domestic speech.

And Biden still has more sense than Trump who daily opens his mouth to incriminate himself further.

Biden was in Ireland this year in fine fettle. With the obligatory verbal gaffe about the Black and Tans. His schedule and speeches here are clear refutations of the armchair doctors clueless comments about dementia and cognitive decline.

If its possible to be critical of Trump why arent you?

I have repeatedly stated I wouldn't vote for Trump at the next election. Before the last election, I said I would have opted for Biden over Trump. So although you too would rather mislead, deflect, and obfuscate about Trump, this attempt has failed.

So yes, I'm consistent about my criticisms about Trump. But you don't have a word to say about the actual subject of this thread -- about Joe Biden and his decline in mental acuity. And as much as I'm flattered you'd rather talk about me, I'd much rather hear your opinion on the actual subject of this thread.

I don't think this bit was for me.

I would broadly agree with everything else you said there. Biden is not well though and is likely deteriorating fairly quick. The man is 80 in fairness.

You do realise you come across as one of the football ultras with this analogy?

There is lots to argue about the Biden administration. His cognitive faculties isn't one of them given he's well ahead of any potential opponent and a better orator than 2 of the last 4 presidents.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,165 ✭✭✭✭astrofool

Barring a mod getting involved, you don't decide the subject of the thread, if people want to make comparisons to other politicians and likely opponents of Biden they are free to do so, yes, everyone realises that makes your position farcical, but that's not the first time.

And to praise a right wing politician, I think Johnson was better at the pulpit than Biden is, but not as good as Obama.

Is it okay to mention Johnson?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,900 ✭✭✭thomas 123

Would you believe a quick google is all it takes to find it. Id imagine that's because its so common, especially among people in Presidents Bidens age profile.

As mentioned already, the US establishment is never going to come out and say their leader and commander in chief is mentally incapacitated in any way shape or form.

Glad we cleared that up. People are falling over themselves to diagnose him though. Including you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,527 ✭✭✭tobefrank321

Most have to agree, he came to Ireland and charmed the pants off us with his wit and oratory. He quoted poets and poetry. He even remembered what one of our own small time politicians told him - Mayo for Sam.

Contrast his speeches without notes and staring the audience in the eye to Leo Varadkar who read every single one of his speeches without barely looking up.

And yet Bidens the guy with a bad memory?

Most people over the age of 80 demonstrate a natural decline in cognitive function, without being diagnosed with a neurodegenerative disease. There's nothing to "clear up". Again, this is manipulative sophistry at work.

It's quite astonishing the degree to which, for some, petty point scoring matters more than actual fact.

I'm sorry this is a thread about the current leader of the US - I could not give a fiddlers F about the former president.
