Dunno why you haven't got any replies, this seems really Intresting.

I can see a lot of people buying these, espically for a 2nd short hop car.

Those range estimates look pretty sus when compared to the battery sizes.

I see they are using the old inaccurate NEDC ratings, so maybe divide by 2 for a more realistic range.

€40,000 by the time it gets to Ireland......

The last Chinese vehicles I drove were an LDV van and a Great Wall Ute in New Zealand. 2 of the worst, most uncomfortable and hideous yolks I've ever been or drove. The Great Wall was brand new but felt 20 years old after a few weeks until the gearbox literally fell out of it...

Roughest farmer around here has a great wall steed pick up. He has abused it to a solid height, has 380,000kms on it and it has never missed a beat.

You are not wrong though, it is a serious rough yoke to drive. I wouldn't even wish a spin in it on the mother in law.

I don't see this being offered here at anywhere close to "~€15k before grants" as the thread title says. I would imagine it will be low to mid 20s by the time it is actually here and the range claims are all on the old NEDC cycle which tends to grossly overinflate these values (and I know WLTP is not perfect but it is closer to real world).

If there car is only being released in China in 2022, then I would guess the earliest we might see it here could be 2023.

I won't hold my breath waiting for it though.... I might lose consciousness!

you could be right .. really hard to know if they have to make changes for europe, the Australian prices should be out soon which may help

BYD announced today the final prices of the Dolphin, which are 3,000 CNY (over $460) or about 3% lower than in pre-sales.

    Four trim levels:

    1. 301 km (187 miles) of NEDC range, 30.7 kWh battery, 70 kW motor
    2. 93,800 CNY ($14,500, €12,200) after subsidies
    3. 405 km (252 miles) of NEDC range, 44.9 kWh battery, 70 kW motor:
    4. 103,800 CNY ($16,045) after subsidies
    5. 405 km (252 miles) of NEDC range, 44.9 kWh battery, 70 kW motor:
    6. 108,800 CNY ($16,820) after subsidies
    7. 401 km (252 miles) of NEDC range, 44.9 kWh battery, 130 kW motor:

Ora Cat: Elektroauto aus China im ersten Check | Review | Sitzprobe | 2021 - YouTube

Looks like good competition for the EA1.

These Chinese cars will keep the Europeans honest.

The reviewer is very tall and he fits in this car.

Projected price in Germany is 30k so just over 20k once incentives are subtracted.

An amazing high quality car for the price. The Chinese are so far ahead in ev development. Reviewer noted the Id life release of 2025. Eu needs to invest massively in ev development at twice the speed if it's going to have a hope of it's car marques surviving. I would happily buy this car tomorrow. It ticks all the boxes for a small second car.

There is going to be another smaller model on the same platform with the 30kWh battery called "Seagull".

It will be citycar/supermini sized with the 70KW motor.

As the Dolphin has 300KM NEDC range this car should have a slightly longer range.

It is projected to sell from 60,000 yuan in China which is about €8200.

These are the cars needed in Europe to push adoption.

From €28k after the grant for the 61kWh version, considering the grant is dropping by €1500, that would be a €26.5k car now. That makes it the second cheapest EV for sale in Ireland, after the classy FIAT 500, but that's very small with tiny range. And this is the long range version. LiFePO4 blade battery and all.

The cheaper, shorter range version is coming out next year. Will likely be the cheapest EV for sale here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 315 ✭✭Stevie2001

5K cheaper than the MG4 with pretty much the same blade battery pack as the MG4 and Tesla Model 3 SR is a fantastic deal

Only negative I can see is the charge rate is very low, 88kW DC. That battery is good for over 140kW in the MG and Tesla, strange it's throttled so much

Some auto giants are absolutely screwed long term. I really can't see all the Japs, French, Koreans, Yanks and some of the Germans surviving

That BYD blade battery and BYD electric motor must be going into every EV at this stage, soon enough it will be all Chinese parts in EV's and you will just be paying for a badge.

Really? I disagree. I see all four French surviving and the two Koreans surviving. They have all made great strides in the last few years. The Japs yes OK might be a few casualtys there.

As for the German's Opel are going all electric now so should survive and Mercedes no doubt will but BMW might not. BMW are quite small really compared to VW or Toyota. That's the only German casualty I could possibly see.

As for the Yanks if you mean Ford yes I think they are screwed big time in danger of going the way of SAAB and MG. No one to blame but themselves.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

    Who are the 4 french manufacturers ? Psa , renault _ _ ?

A lot depends on where the profit lies , if its batteries and motors then yup the legacy autos are screwed ..

If its platforms and models , combining everything then they may survive ,

but there'll be a lot of legacy manufacturing to shed too..

I can see a lot of them merging or just going out of business altogether, will be like the semiconductor industry in the near future, Europe and US will just decide they don't want to do it -- too many resources required, and too much effort

It's too easy to make EV's, its not like making modern diesel and petrol emissions, where you really need expertise to make them reliable and being able to pass Euro 6/7 emission regulations and the cost of entry being high, the Chinese couldn't compete there but with EV's you don't need that expertise, college students could make a perfectly fine EV

Yeah maybe a few will survive, but big changes are coming, even if they all move to electric, why would I buy an Opel vs a BYD that's 10k cheaper.

The Astra is like 40k+ and inferior everywhere tech wise compared to say an MG4 or BYD Dolphin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,875 ✭✭✭Markcheese

    There are different business models,

Theres the likes of tesla that want to make everything in house , vertical integration,

There'll be those that largely buy in their components , and thats fine too ,some may make their own batteries to someone elses design ,

When mercedes uses a renault engine , or half the cars on the road use the same 1.6 diesel , no one really cares..

But yeah - you wont pay 15 grand extra for the same thing ..

@Markcheese - "Theres the likes of tesla that want to make everything in house , vertical integration"

Tesla don't make the batteries for their entry level cars now. They buy them in from Chinese companies CATL and BYD. I'd imagine this could be more than half of their new cars sold worldwide at this stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,713 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

The 30.72 kWh battery pack will provide a range of 301 km*, and the 44.93 kWh battery pack will allow a noticeably longer range of 405 km*

    So efficiencies of 10.2 and 11.1 kWh/100km

Fantastic if true, but I'd be suspicious

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,466 ✭✭✭McGiver

No, BYD blade batteries and the whole BYD drive train are amongst the most efficient, close to Tesla in fact. BYD make their own batteries to their own cars. And they also supply Tesla with batteries. But the efficiency of BYD cars is all down to the expertise and the fact that the car is made as pure BEV top to bottom and they've had a lot of experience with it for many years as the largest Chinese EV maker and 2nd largest global EV maker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,466 ✭✭✭McGiver

Electric Viking has been wrong on many things by the way. Don't take him too seriously.

Also, BYD won't be selling 31 kWh cars in Europe, that's ludicrous. It's going to be most likely only 60 kWh (as Atto 3) and maybe maybe the 45 kWh one. But I wouldn't do that if I were them, unless it's seriously cheap.

    There you go.

BYD Dolphin Launches In Europe Starting At €29,990 (insideevs.com)

    https://www.carwow.co.uk/byd/news/6860/new-byd-dolphin-price-specs

    New BYD Dolphin Active

Base-model Active versions of the Dolphin have a smaller battery and a 95hp electric motor. You also get an energy-efficient heat pump as standard, as well as 60kW DC fast charging. This model starts from 29,990 Euros, which is around £25,800.

    New BYD Dolphin Boost

The Boost uses the same battery as the Active, however it has a more powerful 176hp motor. You also get 17.0-inch alloy wheels and multi-link rear suspension for better comfort and handling. In Europe, this model costs 32,740 Euros, or £28,000.

    New BYD Dolphin Comfort

The BYD Dolphin Comfort comes with a larger 60kWh battery for better range, and you have 88kW DC fast charging for faster top-ups on the go. It also has a more powerful 204hp motor. The price of this version in Europe is 36,200 Euros, or approximately £31,200.

    New BYD Dolphin Design

Range-topping design models have the same motor and battery as the Comfort, however it adds a panoramic glass sunroof, rear privacy glass and wireless phone charging. You also get vehicle-to-load charging, meaning you can use the car to power appliances. This version will set you back 37,740 Euros in Europe, which is £32,500.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,466 ✭✭✭McGiver

    Different prices here.

If BYD don't go full on undercut / cheap then they won't succeed in the EU market as an unknown and obviously Chinese brand.

It's a bit different than MG, which has some residual awareness, especially in the UK.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,713 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

    211 miles or 340km on a 45kWh battery suggests 13kWh/100km.

Definitely more realistic, certainly more realistic that Tesla who claim a 60kWh battery will get you 491km or 12.2kWh/100km

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,466 ✭✭✭McGiver

As expected - BYD will launch with 60 kWh battery and 45 kWh will come later. After testing the market, I guess and to set the price right.

Few more details on trims & pricing here:

BYD Dolphin - Full Review & Drive - All You Need to Know - YouTube

The prices can't be real. If that's the indeed the case then BYD could be sucessful and rival the MG.

MG4 efficiency sucks and the car has plenty of issues and deficiencies. The BYD Dolphin seems to be a solid car overall. It's a very efficient car from the most experienced EV maker apart from Tesla.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 66,140 ✭✭✭✭unkel
    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

    @McGiver - "The prices can't be real"

Why not? BYD will likely be the biggest car maker in the world within 7-10 years. They are already far bigger of course than the likes of MG so they can sell more car for less money while still making more margin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 315 ✭✭Stevie2001

I expected cheaper as an unknown brand and the huge economies of scale they have

Anyone that's driving a brand new MG4, Tesla SR etc are driving a BYD powered car

They are about the only manufacturer in the world that could sell a 60kWh family car for 25k and make a profit

I think the 45kWh Dolphin will be sub 25k when it arrives and they have the next gen blade battery coming next year with 25% more energy density

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 19,510 Mod ✭✭✭✭slave1

Tesla SR are not BYD, they are Panasonic or CATL in the main (made in USA). All Irish newer Teslas are CATL in the main also.

Perhaps LHD Berlin cars are blade but none of those on our roads

It's not even certain that they are being rolled out yet in Berlin. But they will be. Saves Tesla about $1500 per car too compared with the CATL pack. That is huge.

I stand corrected. Looks like only model Y are BYD at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,834 ✭✭✭dloob

Doesn't matter how efficient it is, The NEDC range is the NEDC range and NEDC is a rubbish test standard.

I see we now have WLTP range of 370km for the model that seems closest to the 405km NEDC range model.

Still not readily achievable in the real world but better than NEDC at least.

Bigger battery model is 427km WLTP which is a bit disappointing, Tesla Model 3 with the same size CATL LFP battery is 520km.

Still it is cheap, if rather ugly both inside and out IMHO, although not as bad inside as the atto 3 at least so moving in the right direction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,466 ✭✭✭McGiver

    Nobody is using NEDC anymore.

BYD WLTP figures are as follows.

    Range: 427 km

    Rated Consumption: 159 Wh/km

As per EV database - Vehicle Consumption 142 Wh/km.
