    Did a brief Google.

Surely the grandfather was dead and his “friends” no longer an influence.

Hasn’t his salary been controversial for a very long time? Didn’t he refuse to take a pay cut when others in RTÉ like Pat Kenny agreed to massive reductions?

I have never encountered anybody who likes him or thinks he is a good broadcaster so I don’t understand who is listening to him on the radio or watching the Late Late Show, or why people were paying to be in the audience.

The Mother was big fan of Gaybo, can’t remember what she thought of Pat Kenny but “sure nothing else to do on a Friday night”.

i don’t know how long she watched the show when Tubridy took over but at some point she decided “nothing else” was preferable to the drivel from this guy.

Don't worry Ryan, the BBC will snap you up . . .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,250 ✭✭✭Bellbottoms

Ryan had some ex RTE big wig on the Radio show promoting something or other about 14 months ago. The guest let slip that they were specifically told by the DG at the time to look out for Ryan.

His Grandad might be dead. But he clearly had some friends still left in RTE.

A lot of the listerns are people like me. People who listen to Morning Ireland and forget to change the station to Pat Kenny afterwards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,869 ✭✭✭Ahwell

I have vague memories of reading somewhere his uncle David Andrews saying that he got Tubridy into RTE.

Gerry Ryan's Uncle/Godfather, Eamonn Andrews, was also Chairman of the RTÉ Authority.

There was a blogger in the UK recently who did a map of all the family connections in the UK media. If a similar map was done of the family connections in RTE I think it would be an even bigger scandal then this one.

Des Cahill was on the Pat Kenny Show a couple of months age and he causally mentioned that his son was a producer on The Sunday Game. I think this kind of thing is rife throughout the organisation.

I'll get the tributes rolling for Ryan, Voice and Paragon of Virtue of the Nation

    NEVER FORGET...

The issue is never the issue; the issue is always the revolution.

The Entryism process: 1) Demand access; 2) Demand accommodation; 3) Demand a seat at the table; 4) Demand to run the table; 5) Demand to run the institution; 6) Run the institution to produce more activists and policy until they run it into the ground.

Yeah, it's a relief that the criticisms he has faced over the years have been justified beyond question.

Posters here have been calling out his **** for a long time so this whole scandal is not a surprise when considering his track record - the controversial tax set-up, the use of his radio platform to request gifts, and other things like his initial refusal to take a pay cut following the 08 economic crisis. His little Boards minions have tried to defend this **** but they no longer have a leg to stand on.

He has shamelessly branded himself as the conscience of the nation by preaching about "kindness" and patriotism. He has spent years hounding hard-working people for charitable donations and singing his own praises for it, all the while engaged in dodgy dealings at the expense of the audience that funds his privileged lifestyle.

And unsurprisingly he's too cowardly to acknowledge that he is part of the mob responsible. Instead, he's trying to push the ridiculous notion that he did not realise he was paid hundreds of grands more than what was publicly stated, and trying to pretend he knew nothing about the fiddling of the books to make it look like he was earning less than he was. Despite his statement, he is part of the same corrupt little gang that he is trying to separate himself from.

I think he's finished, although it wouldn't surprise me if he came back to radio for a brief period just to make it look like he has resigned by choice. Whatever happens, the criticisms labelled at him over the years have been justified beyond doubt.

Wonder how Patrick Kielty will feel about this?

was listening to radio one this morning just for a couple of moments and he was giving an update on his electric moped I believe as in, what will happen to it, when he will get it on the road etc and I thought what a strange conversation, but now I know why he was doing that.

  • Oh Ryan Tubridy, he's finally gone,

No longer will we hear his monotonous tone.

His departure was sudden, unexpected indeed,

But now we can all rejoice and be freed.

No more Late Late Show, no more Toy Show,

We can finally change the channel and go.

No more awkward interviews or cringe-worthy gaffes,

We can all breathe a sigh of relief and laugh.

But let's not forget, he did have his fans,

Who loved his cheesy jokes and awkward dance.

But for the rest of us, it's time to move on,

No more Ryan Tubridy, our TV screens have won.

So farewell to you, Ryan Tubridy,

We wish you well, but we won't be missing your comedy.

It's time to say goodbye and turn the page,

To a future of better TV hosts and a new age.

Sorry? What??? Like WTF??? Is this actually serious? Even in 400,000 a year he could afford that himself.

Everything on that list I heard myself. Some other posters emailed the show pointing out that practice is against rte policy and were told that products sent in were sent to a charity...

This could be a good moment for RTE if the government have the testicular fortitude to follow through on an in-depth investigation into every aspect of RTE finances. I’m sure Tubbs isn’t alone in his remuneration arrangements. Sadly this is Ireland so nowt will happen and even the minister for Arts, Culture, Currant Buns, Cute Puppies and Whatever You’re Having Yourself won’t roll despite allegedly knowing about this since March and doing nothing.

You obviously weren't a regular listener, as his asking for freebies was often and in no way disguised.

He is a multimillionaire but didn't seem to like to pay for anything.

I already posted this, it's from last Friday's show. The absolute neck on this man.

He also came out with the comment that he believes in Rte and has always taken pay cuts when they came to him. He was one of the last, along with Gerry Ryan, to accept a pay cut in 2008 and was ambushed live on air in order to answer questions on it. He kicked up a huge fuss about it.

Hopefully this thread won't be going much longer. Don't imagine that people will ever want to hear or see him ever again.

It's the same thing with Joe Duffy. Too much pay for 75 minutes work a day with 10 weeks off a year. These presenters wouldn't know a proper day's work if it hit them.

Given that so many of the "Top Talent" (sic) are represented my the same super-agent, I find it hard to believe that Tubs is the only one with such special arrangements in place. A lot of twitchy bums around Montrose, I'd say!

What the hell were the paying this clown extra money for? He should be sacked. The Director General should be sacked and the Late Late Show should be ended, that Kielty guy can go back to bbc norn iron.

The carbon footprint thing is hilarious as well. RTE constantly telling us how bad the climate emergency is and they've agreed to pay for Kielty to fly over from London once a week for the LLS.

id say whatever remuneration deal they made with paddy Kielty based on published salary figures must be looking shaky now!

Af this point too would someone independently successful like PK still want to throw in their oar with this mess stinking the place up? RTE has dropped a lot in the credibility polls in the past 24 hours.

It should be seriously considered to dispense with RTE as a public entity. Strip it right down.

Rename it and its remit along with TG4 to provide public service content, news, investigative journalism and Irish language content covered by TG4. The licence fee should be used to fund it.

If the commercial arm of it makes money let it stand on its own feet like Virgin Media to produce the Late Late and celebrity bainisteoir and stars in their eyes and the mainstream sports etc without the license fee subsiding it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,640 ✭✭✭TheCitizen

The Late Late Show should be pulled. If it is to continue it shouldn’t be subsidised by the licence fee. It should be put on a commercial tv channel and this outdated public/private hybrid RTE system should be binned.

Modertor: with apologies for the delay, the thread is reopened.

I understand this is an emotive, infuriating issue, and has the makings of a serious scandal. However, there's no need for name calling. In fact, it undermines your point to round off an otherwise cogent post with such childishness.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,265 ✭✭✭bobbyss

When Ryan Tubridy saw the salaries of the top presenters in the newspapers over the years he clearly saw errors in his own salary as publicized. So why did he not address that at the time?

Put yourself in his position. What would you do? Wouldn't you contact whoever and say 'There seems to be a mistake there' and so on.

What is unclear and troubling is why he did not do that? Was there something he did not want to now about?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,250 ✭✭✭Bellbottoms

You are forgetting that 2019, he did an interview with the Irish Mirror and made a big show over his paycuts. He knew the figures were wrong, and went out of his way to mislead the public in 2019. Now I am sure some might make the case and that he was refering to earlier paycuts. But he isn't. Here is a direct quote

“I’ve taken a pay cut before. I took over 30% the last time and they’ve asked for more again which will bring it up to about 45% or (so) since I took the Late Late Show. When it comes to this sort of issue, that’s not something I’ve ever been found wanting in and that continues to be the case, yeah.”

He claimed he took an additional paycut in 2019, he hadn't. The implications I will leave up to you.

i wonder was Dave Mc Redmond of An Post’s application to become DG blocked by those who knew about this controversy?

Its looking more likely this thread will be consigned to history, as its going to be incredibly difficult for Tubs to come back to his slot.

The fact that he isn't an rte employee makes it easy for them to say, "sorry Ryan, we won't be needing you any more'.

Courtenay or Callan would be more than able for the spot, on a lot less money.

I think the public want heads to roll for this debacle. D 4orbes already gone anyway, so I think Tubs head will help smooth over the mess.

And nothing will be lost. It is a poor show, that anyone can host. 30 minutes of the newspapers, and an interview about illness for the remainder.

Dee Forbes isn't really 'gone' in the sense that she is losing her job though. She had effectively already left and was on leave until the end of her tenure. From a practical point of view, her suspension is posturing, but of no real consequence to her.

The timing of the statement from RTE is mightily convenient. It gave time for Dee to be gone, and for Ryan to have his big Late Late swansong. I would speculate that both were given a chance to get their respective houses in order before this landed, and any 'punishment' now will have little effect.

Good call NI, I’d give it to Callan but not anywhere near Tubs wedge

He seems to have learned to take the politics cuts out of it and in fairness seems very able to handle the task.

Courtney might be a bit too ‘high on his heels’ to appeal to ‘rural Ireland.
