Commentators at end of Mayo Cork game hadn't a clue of the final finishing positions, talking about getting the abacus out etc, jeez its not rocket science, they should have that info straight away

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 866 ✭✭✭amlinopta

Poor by The Sunday Game not to show Heslin's last free for Westmeath

  • Registered Users Posts: 588 ✭✭✭Treble double

Paul Flynn and Canavan are excellent, Flynn explaining what Mayo need to do to improve against packed defences was really good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,973 ✭✭✭WesternZulu

The fact that there were no actual pundits for analysis was very poor too.

Basically the half time section involved the commentator and the co-commentator Michael Meehan doing the analysis.

Very amateur considering people are paying for this.

If they can't be arsed paying for pundits how do they expect people to be arsed paying for GaaGo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,843 ✭✭✭MacDanger

It was similar for the Armagh match, commentators didn't give any updates on the Tyrone match despite it having a massive impact on how the group would finish. You'd think someone could be in their ear with an occasional update

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,142 ✭✭✭spakman

Sure Sunday Sport on radio 1 thought galway topped the group for about 15 mins after full time. Its not that complicated, but Des Cahill, Cora Staunton and Padraic Lodge all thought Galway won the group - even if they couldn't figure it out among themselves, wouldn't you think someone back in studio could correct them!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 866 ✭✭✭amlinopta

A lot of mistakes on various programs. The nine o'clock news had Roscommon finishing second in their group with a home quarter final, even though Kildare finished ahead of them on head-to-head.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,353 ✭✭✭keeponhurling

It was weird, as they talked about it as though it had been shown.

It was "a matter of inches"... what was ?!

Sunday Game also don't have to have any consistent policy on spoilers.

for the first games it was just "let's see how it all unfolded", so all good if you don't know the result

for the third games they just said "and now footage of Dublin beating Sligo and Kildare beating Roscommon"

and sometimes the pundits reference the result of a game that hasn't been shown yet.

  • Registered Users Posts: 823 ✭✭✭MattressRick

They showed it later. They've a habit of holding back stuff from a game if theyve a plan to specifically talk about it later on. Which doesn't make sense when it's a major scoring chance at the end of a game.

the GAA have the fixtures, and telly arrangements, sorted for next weekend (in a nice format that i can copy and paste with no messing!!)

Interesting that the Galway v Mayo game is on RTE1 and not GAAgo , but its avoiding a world of pain from the Mayo fans for not having Mayo getting knocked out of the championship live on free to air telly, so good to see that one moved !

Ross Munnelly doing sterling work as a Co-commentator in the Roscommon v Cork game. Decent insight and not just the 'he'll be disappointed with that Ger' stuff.

The commentators on the Kildare v Monaghan game obviously not in Tullamore - 'I wonder did it rain at half time, the ball is slippy in the players hands since the break'. Hardly good enough?

No Saturday Game tonight despite 5 high profile games today. Shambles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,385 ✭✭✭franglan

Was there supposed to be 6 or 7 of them this year? Has there been half that so far?

Terrible scheduling by the GAA yet again.

Why do they insist on having the hurling quarter finals on a Saturday and give the Sunday slots to the Tailteann Cup.

Very few people are interested in the Tailteann Cup.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,664 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

No. They are giving the Tailteann Cup some deserved exposure, prime time Sunday afternoon slots from Croke Park on Sunday afternoon.

If only someone didn't schedule a knock out championship game between 2 of the best teams in the country at the same time on RTE One at the same time 😜.

    Now, THAT'S terrible scheduling...

    Lunacy!

Meath fans not at the games have a choice of viewing. The Meath ladies are on TG4 at the same time as the men are on RTE 2.

Shocking picture quality for the Cork Derry game again today, picture is out of focus, too bright and full of noise.

    No excuse for such crap.

Damien Lalor asks the most pointless questions to managers, players, etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,799 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

Why does Fitzmaurice keep name checking the commentator in games?

He name checked Marty at least 100 times today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 255 ✭✭Iecrawfc

Why can't RTE show a Saturday Game highlights show when both matches that day were on GAAGo? Surely that was the point of the extra highlights show they had a big announcement about, unless they deliberately try to push people onto the GAAGo platform by denying license fee payers the top games, but oh no they would never do that being motivated solely to serve the people interest!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,570 ✭✭✭celt262

Was there a highlights show last year when the games were on Sky ?

There definitely should have been a show last Saturday and i don't see the point of saying there is going to be a Saturday show and then not bother.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,486 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

BBC 2 Northern Ireland is showing the two hurling semi finals on Saturday and Sunday. RTE 2 will also have camogie before both of those games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,867 ✭✭✭Red Silurian

Got an email from GAAGO yesterday claiming they will be showing both of the hurling semi's. Guess I'll be watching the U20s rugby on Sunday in that case

Non-excusive coverage I'd say. The games are on RTE for definite.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,448 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

RTE are showing them, but they are probably available on GAA Go for viewers outside Ireland.

In the Sky days the semi finals and finals were on both RTE and Sky.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,432 ✭✭✭✭MisterAnarchy

Diabolical picture again on RTE for the hurling.

I checked it on 3 tvs in the house to rule it out being my eyesight but it was a crap picture on every one of them and they are bloody good sets. Missus agreed.

BBC 2 was poor too but they are using RTE's cameras.

It must be the cameras RTE are using , they are garbage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,976 ✭✭✭Charlie69

How would a different TV help if your eyesight was the problem 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,432 ✭✭✭✭MisterAnarchy

Meant to say the tv setup, my eyesight is fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,664 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

How do all the lads on the panels that get togged out with the free suits fair out with the taxman, most of them on private sponsorship gigs for menswear companies around the country. Canning looked ridiculous this evening, very ill at ease with his 'tin o fruit' at a hurling match ffs.

What was up with the BBC not having access to the Hawkeye feed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,486 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

Despite MisterAnarchy saying that the BBC were using the RTE cameras, I don't think they were. They were using the satellite feed below, which is one they use when they are doing matches in Ulster, not sharing with RTE. Maybe that is why the Tá, Níl screen did not appear? And there is nothing wrong with the pictures, MisterAnarchy needs to check their equipment or their eyesight.

Watched the game on the bbc iPlayer and the picture was perfect.

Also the commentary was refreshing as it lacked all the usual rte standard catchphrases.

The picture is definitely not good.....definitely an issue this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,596 ✭✭✭Asdfgh2020

We can blame Tubs, Marty etc ‘bleeding’ RTE dry to line their own pockets leaving the station with no money to invest in latest tech/cameras etc….!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,432 ✭✭✭✭MisterAnarchy

There is nothing wrong with my eyesight or that of my family and the equipment/tv sets are high end Plasmas and Oleds, which have had the settings tweaked.

I also have a multi position satellite system so I know what a good HD feed should look like and what RTE have been outputting this season falls well short.

I must try that feed on 16E today and see if it is any better.

Watched the game on the bbc iPlayer and the picture was perfect.

How big was the screen you watched it on ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,664 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Not a comoige fan, but have to snigger at eh half time chatter with yer wan talking about the teams going 'Man on man' and players getting caught in 'no man's land'!

Fair play to that lady for not ba5tardising the language, cant help think that one of the lads would be jumping through hoops to avoid these terms.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,486 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

You said in previous posts that it is very difficult for you to see the sliotar. And that the picture quality is "diabolical". It is pointless to discuss what you are seeing, or what other posters are seeing, as I cannot see through your or their eyes. I am looking at a 50 inch LG OLED, and everthing is good to my eyes. The resolution on the satellite picture from BBC is 1920 x 1080, as against 1440 x 1080 on terrestrial from RTE. But switching between them, and without being able to do a side by side comparison, they look the same.

Probably very few people in the country could claim to have eyesight that has nothing wrong. Have you been to an optician for a test to prove that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,799 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

Don’t put all the blame on them….blame the management who let them “bleed RTE dry”.

Only saw this now and it ends tomorrow.

Public consultation on free to air sports on TV

Under consideration are the All Ireland senior football and hurling quarter finals.

    Get your spake in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,294 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

I only heard the ad today on Newstalk around midday and that's why I'm here now. The ad ends by saying the public consultation ends 27th February(and having checked the link, it's 5pm today). The ₱®1¢#$ in government trying to pull another fast one, by including 9 sports that the vast majority of the country couldn't care less about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,294 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

    What the absolute F###!?

I didn't even get to see or answer a single question.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,486 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

My reading of it is that none of the current designated events are going to be lost. The consulatation is to establish which new events could be added. As regards what some majority wants, the majority are probably out shopping when Mens All Ireland Finals are on.

Current List of Designated Events (year designated)

    Live:

    • The All-Ireland Senior Ladies’ Football Final (2017)

    • The All-Ireland Senior Camogie Final (2017)

    • The Summer Olympics (2003)

    • The All-Ireland Senior Inter-County Football & Hurling Finals (2003)

    • Ireland's home and away qualifying games in the European Football Championship & the FIFA World Cup Tournaments (2003)

    • Ireland's games in the European Football Championship Finals Tournament and the FIFA World Cup Finals Tournament (2003)

    • The opening games, the semi-finals and final of the European Football Championship Finals and the FIFA World Cup Finals Tournament (2003)

    • Ireland's games in the Rugby World Cup Finals Tournament (2003)

    • The Irish Grand National and the Irish Derby (2003)

    • The Nations Cup at the Dublin Horse Show (2003)

    Deferred:

Ireland's games in the Six Nations Rugby Football Championship (2003)

Following consideration of the feedback from the previous public consultation and taking into account Government policy on the promotion of women’s sporting events, the Minister has now decided to progress to the next phase and put the events detailed below for further detailed consideration for a designation.

The events for further consideration are:

    • The quarter and semi-finals of the All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship

    • The finals of the Provincial Camogie Championship

    • The quarter and semi-finals of the All-Ireland Senior Ladies’ Football Championship

    • The finals of the Senior Ladies’ Provincial Football Championship

    • Ireland’s home and away qualifying games in, the opening games, Ireland’s games, and the semi-finals and final of, the FIFA Women’s World Cup Tournament

    • Ireland’s home and away qualifying games in, the opening games, Ireland’s games, the semi-finals and final of the UEFA European Women’s Football Championship

    • Ireland’s games in the Women’s Rugby World Cup Finals Tournament

    • Ireland's games in the Women’s Six Nations Rugby Football Championship

    • Ireland’s games in the UEFA Nations League

    • Ireland’s games in the UEFA Women’s Nations League

    • The quarter and semi-finals of the All-Ireland Senior Football and Senior Hurling Championships

    • The finals of the Senior Football and Hurling Provincial Championship

    • The final of the European Rugby Champions Cup should an Irish provincial team be represented (there is no equivalent women’s competition)

    • Ireland’s games in the Six Nation’s Rugby Championship to be designated as live from its current deferred status

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,843 ✭✭✭MacDanger

Genuine question - what's the problem with including those extra events as having to be free to air? True, they might not currently have massive audiences but unless I'm mistaken, all this does is prevent those events from going behing a paywall,, right?
