Was having palpitations watching the 5 point lead slip!

Well earned win in the end given the missed chances.

Hard to believe that’s more or less the same team from Clare a couple of months ago. Deserve to play in Croker after the recovery since then.

Fantastic win. They dug deep again. Not perfect, but so much better than recent years. Still can’t believe that Sherlock point being ruled wide and Chris Og Jones not getting a penalty, but otherwise ref did well enough.

That's a fantastic win for Cork. We are in bonus territory now and what a place to be. Cork really need to get up in division 1 in the league asap. We are massive underdogs for next week. Suit us nicely.

They have really grown into the last two games. Probably good enough to win their 3 group games too, unlucky against us.

I think Chris Og was fouled outside the square. Don’t think he actually got fouled at all when he got inside.

I was first to criticise the footballers this year and I'm delighted to have been proven some bit wrong.

To get this far is a achievement. I just hope this is the start of something rather than false dawn but think Cleary has proven he was right man for job long time ago.

The biggest pity is that he didn't get it a few years ago.

Roscommon are a division one team, and they drew with Dublin. While Dublin are a team on the slide, that was still an impressive result. This was always going to be a tough game, but we backed up the Mayo win here. We proved that it wasn't a fluke. We're in the quarter finals now, and anything after that will be bonus territory.

Either one of Kerry, Dublin, Armagh and Derry will be a tough game, but i reckon we can have a right cut off whoever we get in the quarter finals. That Clare game in Ennis sure feels like a time ago now. We've really turned the corner since then in fairness.

We can't get Kerry or Mayo( if they win) in QF am I correct in saying?

If John Cleary got the job in winter 2013, then we wouldn't have spent the last decade in the wilderness imo. We finally have the right management teams in place in both senior codes thankfully. Whenever Pat Ryan finishes his tenure as senior hurling manager, then we'll have Ben O'Connor ready to step in. I think the future really is looking good for both Cork hurling and football thankfully!

It'll be one of the group winners, so it looks like we could be playing Kerry in croke park for the first time since the 2009 all Ireland final. Mayo didn't finish on top of their group, so we won't be playing them the next day. Hopefully we'll be seeing Mayo in the final though if we make it there.😁

If it's Kerry we won't go any further, we will find a way to lose. Because its KERRY and we can't beat them when it matters. So hope we don't draw them.

mighty win , know the feeling , especially when its against the odds , i feel derry would be the ideal draw for cork to get , we played them last week whit half our team missing , they dont look as good without galagher and they whinged all week that we went in too hard on them , something you would never expect from an ulster side

that being said , the performances in the group against kerry and mayo have been top class so fear no one!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,028 ✭✭✭Straight Talker

Well we should have beaten them the last day, although we've had some tough days against Kerry in croke park back in the 00's. That 2009 all Ireland final and the 2008 all Ireland semi final replay, where the two croke park games that we could've won against them though.

But yeah i'd rather we avoid Kerry in the draw as well! Hopefully it will be one of Derry and Armagh. Both of those games will still be tough, but they would be better draws than either Kerry or Dublin, and it would be interesting to see how we fare against a battle hardened Ulster team imo.

I think that would be our first championship meeting with Derry since the 1993 all Ireland final. That was Derry's one and only senior all Ireland, so i can't begrudge them it too much. But i'll go to my grave with the opinion that we were robbed that day. It would be nice to get a small bit of revenge on Derry thirty years later though!

that was a fine cork team that time that never got over the line , a lot of that team had changed from 1990 , there was a gap in the market with kerry in a slump that time , the boys up north pounced in that era , but in truth nearly every football final in the early 90s was tarnished in some way by bad referees , lets hope jerome henry dosnt get near this years one 🙄😂

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,028 ✭✭✭Straight Talker

We had nine players from the 1989/1990 team starting that day, and three more from that team come on as subs. The team was infused and refreshed though with players like Mark O'Connor, Ciaran O'Sullivan, Joe Kavanagh and Colin Corkery. Brian Corcoran was on that team as well, all though he got cleaned out by Joe Brolly that day! Don Davis was a very hard working and underrated players as well.

I'd have a lot of regrets about the hurlers in 1991 (we should've beaten Tipp in both the draw and replay), and the footballers in 1993. In 1992 though we just weren't good enough in that 1992 all Ireland final, and Kilkenny were worthy and deserving winners that day.

Our performances in that 1992 championship, just weren't as good as what we produced in 1990 and 1991. The mid 80's to early 90's is very much my favourite GAA era. Those few years just before and after the double just had a certain magic to them imo.

the word pressure springs to mind , cork was the center of the sporting universe at the time , the soccer team was on the cusp of champions league football , pity they didnt make it because they had the greatest jerseys of all time , the guinness ones, cork con won the AIL, the hurlers and footballers were after doing the double in an era of knockout football and hurling

the franks were being supported by radiohead in leeds and reading , both hurling and football were top class at the time but too much talk of another double , its easy get carried away if you look back at things

Repeat of group stage matchups are to be avoided in the quarter finals, so it'll be Dublin, Derry or Armagh.

Great posts. It's funny I could tell you all corks results from in football and hurling from 1986 to 2005 (well who won I get score lines in about 40%).

Can I ask though why you think we were robbed v Derry in 93? Seen it mentioned before on other forums. Was it the ref?

I was only 8 or 9 that year in the Canal. Derry fans were immense sports people. Had a soft spot for them for years although Joe Brolly has decreased that quiet bit over the years.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,599 ✭✭✭eigrod

Tony Davis was sent off for nothing. Ref realised he should’ve sent Niall Cahalane off earlier and decided to send Davis off for nothing.

1988 v Meath was worse. Tommy Sugrue, Kerry ref, gave Meath a free in front ofgoal to equalise with last kick of game. 3 Cork players surrounded Meath player and not one laid a hand on Meath player, who threw himself down. Meath won the replay.

My dad is still bitter about 88. Everytime I hear that surname he is first person I think off. Although my father used call him something nice before his surname.

That 70s team, the team from 88-95 and team from 08-12 should have all won least another all ireland.

Cork football has been full of what's ifs

I was at those 4 finals in a row, 87-90 and to this day I curse Sugrue.

If Galway defenders showed a modicum of composure in the final minutes of the '88 semi-final, ye wouldn't have been worrying about the final.
