It’s actually really sad to see a county like Meath in the Talteann cup .

What happened with McGill? Hasn't lined out this season as far as I'm aware?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,445 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hammer Archer

Why? We're there simply because we finished sixth in division 2 and Sligo and Clare made their provincial finals (and we didn't). If it had been in place over the last 10-15 years, you would have had teams like Roscommon, Monaghan, Kildare, Derry, Cork and Armagh in it too (ourselves too). And that's just the teams that (from memory) have been in divisions 3/4. I'm sure there may have been others based on league position in division 2 during that time.

I think he was unfit after Christmas and didn't return to the panel. There was talk of a bust up with O'Rourke but not sure how true that is.

3 weeks is a long gap to the final ?

Anyway hard luck to Antrim and well done to Down. They went for it and I have never seen a team go for goals like they did.

Exactly. Throw in Down, Cavan and Fermanagh into that too. Poor reflection on structures within the county that has allowed this to happen. Look at Clare, a duel county, not a huge population but competing valiantly for Sam while some of their hurlers would walk on the football team. People fawning over a Down/Meath final in the second tier need a reality check.

It's like the cute hoor club secretary and manager entering their U14 team in the fourth Division championship knowing full well they will win it easy, so they get all the plaudits for bringing a trophy to the parish, when in actual fact they could have been competitive in Division 2 or 3, but not winning a trophy

Push out the boat a little and strive to improve rather than being stuck in a little bubble, happy to be legends in their own lunch-boxes.!!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,445 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hammer Archer

Literally not a single person is "fawning" over Meath or Down in the final. For Meath, it's been a way to give newer players games while also being a shot to guaranteeing All Ireland football next year. There won't be mad celebrations if we win in a few weeks. Not sure why you're throwing Fermanagh in with the other teams. They've never even won an Ulster title before and given the small population and demographics in the county, they've got much more problems than the structures in the county.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,340 ✭✭✭howiya

Down, a division three team, would have had to make the Ulster final to avoid being in the Tailteann Cup. Hardly cute hoorism by anyone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,143 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

Down’s problems, a bit like Derry before them, was that they have a highly competitive club game and alot of their best players wouldn’t commit to the county team.

They’ve now appointed the right man who has managed to get everyone to row in behind him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,646 ✭✭✭washman3

A county steeped in football tradition. 8th overall in the roll of honour with 5 wins, their only loss in a final being the 2010 final to Cork. Hardly a lifetime ago. What's gone wrong up there that they are now happy to compete in a Tier 2 competition. How does a county like them end up in Division 3 in the first place. FFS, Limerick were in Div 2 this year, a county where hurling is king at this point in time and football laughed at. Clare likewise, but granted football is taken more serious there.

Don't think it was great for the promotion of the Tailtean Cup with Mayo and Galway on Rte 1 at 3. Obviously it was an important game, but the Tailtean Cup last year the semi finals were standalone fixtures.

The new round robin hasn't helped the Tailtean Cup

it was defiantly a negative having it one at the same time but the laois performance against down didnt help either , antrim were excellent against meath though which holds up the competition

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,340 ✭✭✭howiya

Have been to a number of workshops over the years where Conor has presented/coached players. Seems very impressive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,300 ✭✭✭tanko

Has anyone from Down said they’re “happy” to be playing in the Tailteann cup?? It has been explained what has gone wrong up there, the success of club teams and internal problems have hampered the county team.

When you end up in a secondary competition, that you think is beneath you, you can react in one of two ways:

    • Don't even bother and phone it in
    • Accept that this is your current level but that the best way to ensure it's not your future level is to go ahead and win the thing

Last year Down went with the first option, this year they're going with the second. Just because they're trying to win the competition doesn't mean that they are happy that they are playing in it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,843 ✭✭✭MacDanger

That's exactly it - this competition (and similarly in the SM groups) has given all of the management teams extra time & games with their players and that's surely a benefit to them for next year

    Final Today:

    Odds:

Surprisingly long odds on Meath considering they won the group game. Has there been some injury news or is it just because Down seem to like playing in Croke Park?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,080 ✭✭✭blowitupref

23 mins played. One of the most fluke goals ever scored in Croke Park? Meath 1-1 Down 0-5

    Half time

    Two poor teams

Poor enough display from both teams so far

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,480 ✭✭✭robbiezero

No its a long road from this to being competitive at Sam Maguire level and will take either team years all going well.

But it would a nice big step in the right direction. Would love to see these 2 teams get back to a competitive level again.

This game itself is poor quality. Conditions not helping, but its on a day like today that the difference in how the top teams use the ball and how expertly they do the simple things is starkly illustrated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,751 ✭✭✭This is it

Meath running straight into Down players every time, feck sake.

    Two good points though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,751 ✭✭✭This is it

Goal chance at either end, no one takes it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,486 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

It is typical of the style of game when two teams are well matched. Not the free flowing football Down were allowed to play by Laois. They looked like candidates for Sam next year on that performance.

    Cracking run and point

That Jack O’Connor looks like a baller. Not afraid to take a shot either.

Grey takes it with one arm, other arm being pulled back. Some man

Good to see a young team playing with a bit of freedom and kicking points

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,751 ✭✭✭This is it

Meath really stepped up in the second half

    Costello - pure class

Yes! Good second half was the difference

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,080 ✭✭✭blowitupref

Goal in the 5th minute of added time seals it for Meath. Not the highest quality of matches but Meath was the better team with their shot selections and decision making and defended better. Meath 2-13 Down 0-14

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,480 ✭✭✭robbiezero

Well done Meath. It was a better second half.

Pleased for O Rourke. Gave up a cushy number for what looked at thankless job.

Well done Meath. Well done Colm O'Rourke's. It's a matter of building on this next year

    Slava Ukrainii

You can't argue with that result. Meath were the better team. Some great points scored and performances.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,294 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Good interview with Colm O'Rourke there. The Latin phrase he used at the end, “Nunc est bibendum” translates as “Now is the time for drinking”. And yes I had to use Jimmy Google.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,392 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

Are ye joking!! The Dubs have been wiping the boards for God knows how many years in Leinster. Who can remember how many Leinster titles they have now, it's a joke. The other counties are like weeds struggling for a bit of light.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,445 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hammer Archer

As the conditions improved, so did the game. Very enjoyable second half. Some wonderful scores from O'Connor, Flynn and Costello in the

Fair play to the lads and Colm. After the first two games of the league, it was 6 dreadful results in a row resulting in dropping to the Tailteann Cup. Could very well have written off the season but they got refocused and now have guaranteed All Ireland football next season. And we've managed to get a bit of a winning feeling back and some silverware which we haven't had in a long time.

Some talented young players coming through and it will only benefit them playing games against the best.

Brilliant interview by O'Rourke on RTE after the game,he has a likable dry wit. Never thought by watching a football game that I would broaden my mind learning a Latin phrase and also gaining some knowledge of the poet Horace. Well done to Meath

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 478 ✭✭mvt

Yes, well done Meath & also Down- both teams showing that they knew something was at stake today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,486 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

Unless they up their game in the League, they could finish up like Westmeath, no better off the year after next for having won the Tailteann. Complacency about being guaranteed a place in the last 16 in Sam, could lead to them being relegated from Division 2. And a repeat of the dismal campaign in Leinster that we saw this year. They should be looking to get to the Leinster Final and/or a high finish in Division 2 to get into Sam, and make progress for the future.

Division 2 next year. Meath Louth Kildare Cork Armagh Donegal Cavan Fermanagh. Are Meath good enough to finish 5th or better?

  • Registered Users Posts: 588 ✭✭✭Treble double

A lot of commentary around the game suggests that Down played poorly and were blunt up front. From watching it, I felt Meath defended very well, got plenty of bodies back, but more importantly put serious pressure on Down in the middle third and turned them over there a few times. I thought Harnan was outstanding at centre back and the two midfielders Grey and Jones worked themselves into the ground. I think it was more of a case of Down not being let play the game they wanted to play. Meath have some physically huge players and Down found it hard to compete with them. O'Rourke and his backroom team deserve credit for the way they achieved victory. There is a lot of young raw talent in that Meath squad, I'm looking forward to see how they progress.

Apt that the Tailteann cup spends it's first few years hanging around in the Kingdom of Meath.

  • Registered Users Posts: 823 ✭✭✭MattressRick

How has the Tailteann Cup been received in Meath was there much of a homecoming?

There was a homecoming in Páirc Tailteann yesterday evening with a decent turnout. Wouldn't say Meath fans were lining the streets or anything but it was nice to be able to bring a bit of silverware home. No Meath fan would be seeing this as a pinnacle or anything, but it's been a good way to get a winning feeling into what is a very young team (can't remember the last time we won 6 games in a row) and winning a final in Croke Park is never a bad thing (if you don't count 2010, the last time our senior footballers won a final in Croke Park was the 2001 Leinster final). Also takes the pressure off us somewhat in the league/Leinster next season given that there's no way that we won't be in the last 16.
