RTE salaries were a big talking point, particularly at a time when the public were told that salaries for those at the top were to be cut.

Tubridy was well aware that the public were being deceived, at a time that he was the beneficiary of that deceit. That makes him complicit in the deception, and his lack of transparency at the time reflects either his disregard or disdain for the public.

I agree, RTE is national broadcaster which is going around complaining for years about people not paying a TV license. While at the same time they are jumping through hoops to make sure their "stars" are fiddling the tax books so they have to pay the least amount of tax possible,

If someone wants to work in RTE, they work in RTE and get paid by RTE. Paying tax as every other person in Ireland has to.

Id say it a goes back to Jerry Ryan to be honest he created the myth of his value and to to a lesser extent Pat Kenny this idea of stars, Gay Byrne was different he was an icon of Irish society.

Do they even legally have to report presenters earnings at all? I know they do it and I assume they are compelled to somehow but I wonder what the mechanism is.

Anyway for once we are in total agreement walshb 😁

For a smart guy he's been so stupid

All he had to do was deny knowledge of the extra money and say he'd pay back the money no probs and even give something to charity

He's so wealthy the incredibly naïve general public would believe he didn't notice the extra cash ( though you can be sure he would notice if he was short 350k )

Makes me think he's either incredibly stingy or maybe he's up to his tits in debt and the rumoured expensive substance habit he has is true, but I believe option 1 that he's incredibly stingy and entitled

He's finished now anyway, even the older generation have lost it with him

I don't think they legally have to do it but due to the massive earnings that some "stars" got during the boom I thought this was an agreement to release details of the top 10 every year. I don't think they done it when Pat as walking out with 900k a year and thats why they have to now

The Accountants and Auditors need to be named and shamed here also.

They published the accounts, for FIVE years.

Where else were they cooking the books?

Half a MILLION euro a year - to do a few hours of morning radio and struggle through presenting a mediocre (at best) Friday night chat show...

You have to admire the neck on him.

And us fools still paying our TV Licence, like good little boys n girls.

We’ll get there regarding the gypsy king!!😅

    It’s not the first time.

If you can’t win the argument or are seen you be losing it just resort to personal abuse - as has happened in this thread. If that doesn’t work, create a new account and go directly to the mods overtly on the thread and covertly via backchannels. It’s pretty sad that people have to re-reg to seek my removal - for telling the truth. Truth I’ve been telling for years btw.

I haven’t said anything in this thread worthy of a ban so let’s see if I’m still around later.

Yeah but he must have been threatening to leave hence the retention risks Forbes alludes to. I'd like to see proof of that. Others in RTE were taking pay cuts and losing their jobs but Tubs was above all that and completely irreplaceable...

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,280 ✭✭✭ZookeeperDub

Except when Tubs said he was leaving it was very easy to fill his slot on Late Late which a presenter who in my opinion will be far far far superior.

  • Registered Users Posts: 891 ✭✭✭Emblematic

I can understand the public being angry with RT given his public persona, others having to take pay cuts etc. There's an element of hypocracy there. Nevertheless, it is not Tubridy's job to make sure RTE management dot the i's and cross the t's with regard to reporting amounts paid to presenters.

Nope, I’m not. And I’m not engaging in this baiting.

  • When posters get called mentally ill, which has been done to me also, it goes way way way beyond what’s acceptable. There’s people who would naturally disagree with myself and others but don’t resort to that level.

    RTE are delusional.

They previously appointed the CEO of a major Irish production company, who has produced many shows for RTE, to their own board. Who thought that would be a good idea?

ShinAwiL is the production powerhouse behind some of Ireland’s biggest entertainment series’ including The Apprentice, Dragons’ Den, MasterChef Ireland, The Voice of Ireland and most recently Dancing with the Stars Ireland.

RTE say they have to pay Tubridy, O'Callaghan, Duffy and D'Arcy huge wages or risk losing them to the private sector. Cut their wages and see how they get on in the private sector. No presenter in RTE should earn more than 200k. Bear in mind that these presenters can also earn appearance money so god knows how much Tubridy has actually raked in over the years.

I have to say that always made me laugh, long before any of this happened - albeit it's not funny.

Especially considering the constant badgering about increasing the funding to RTE and the already high price of the tv licence.

The notion that any of them would walk into a job elsewhere. Never mind be poached by a rival station. And at those ridiculous wages.

    Not a chance.

I would love to see any of them try it, life in the real world, that is.

It kinda is, isn't he paid to be a current affairs commentator and to ask questions of what's going on in the country?

I don’t think you should be asking people not to engage in a topic. This is a message board forum not a place for you to tell people how to think or how frequently they should or should not post.

I have been called unhinged, mentally ill and sensitive in this thread alone. If you didn’t see them that’s not my fault.

    My last comment to you.

  • Registered Users Posts: 55,453 ✭✭✭✭walshb

I never asked anyone not to engage in a topic.

I think the main issue with topics like these is there being no middle-ground. It's one way or the other, and that generally leads to childish squabbles.

All their presenters should be employees, they should have permanent contracts and pensionable jobs at a base salary for 39 hours per week.

They then earn more depending on the shows they do, and that pay is connected to the performance of that show for the duration it runs.

Go present the sunday game, get a premium for sunday work, and performance related pay for its performance.

    Its really that simple.

Although what should happen is that license fee is halved, and the entire station moves behind a paywall with the exception of Rte News which shows news, public interest broadcasts weather and investigations. Fair city can get fcked for itself if it cant survive commercially

Claire Byrne has apparently detailed her salary/fee over the last few years on air, as well as noting she was always supposed to be off-air last Thursday & Friday due to a family event/holiday and this was booked well in advance.

She seems to be in the clear anyway. It would be an extremely bold move to go into as much detail as she did if she knew she was getting extra money from background deals and knowing everyone's salaries are going to be investigated/scrutinised.

It'll be really interesting to see who follows with statements of this nature. If I were in the clear I'd scream it from the roof tops also.

She's still paid too much for the job she is doing I think.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,556 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

Hard to agree with the socialist part of it considering his pay for being a poor badly researched shock jock

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,003 ✭✭✭Expunge

Yes but was this in a bid to help Noel Kelly's business?

To show that not all of his stable of "stars" are involved in Tubridy style payments.

I wouldn't put it past NK management to "advise" on such a statement.

  • Registered Users Posts: 55,453 ✭✭✭✭walshb

This is the problem today. It's gone from nobody having standards to insane OTT and unnecessary scrutiny, and folks desperately searching for any whiff of perceived "impropriety." It's no wonder everyone is so carefully looking over their shoulders all the time.

So you can have some really brilliant and clever and good people doing extraordinary work, and they "drop the ball" for a second and it's an avalanche of scrutiny and criticism from the mob mentality

It has gone from weak standards to the public deciding what is and isn't a standard, and what is and isn't morally acceptable. Simply too many people wanting to get stuck in

And its very evident here. This affair, albeit needing scrutiny, has been blow way out of proportion

  • Registered Users Posts: 29,281 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

    You could be right.

On the other hand, it puts pressure on the other NK stars to come clean though... if Claire Byrne did it when not them.

The fact that was up on the Indo"s website within minutes of being aired might suggest that your concerns are well founded
