Well he was quoted as saying "I can’t shed any light on why RTÉ treated these payments in the way that they did"

    and from NK

"There is no issue whatsoever in relation to the payments being properly and lawfully due and there is no suggestion of any wrongdoing on the part of Ryan Tubridy or NK Management,"

To me that seems to imply that he wasn't aware of the way he was getting this money.

@Hypocrite and all the RTE and RT luvvies I have a question for you all which I hope you can answer. Should NK and RT be also asked to attend the various house committees such as the PAC?

    That prompts a though:

If a 'supplier' conspires with an element of a civil service department \ semi state to circumvent state procurement rules for financial gain ... is there a legal penalty that could be applied to them? Or just stopped as a supplier?

The reason I have placed people on ignore is to avoid conflict, trolling, or baiting. Or also to avoid personal abuse, or to avoid being on the receiving end of messages from people who create new accounts to overtly call for my removal from the thread and site.

I flagged (more than once) that I will not be replying to them, yet they’re still quoting me, which is a little bizarre.

I am simply re-stating I won’t be replying to posters I have on ignore, no matter how much they attempt to bait me. Sorry.

    posters like this:

Have a meeting at 3 so will be offline for a few hours. Laters.

It doesnt seem that way to me. When he says "I can’t shed any light on why RTÉ treated these payments in the way that they did", to me he's saying he can't shed any light on why the extra payments weren't disclosed by RTE in the publication of their salaries.

NK Management are saying they didn't do anything wrong because it is not their job to accurately publish RTE salaries.

Tubridy actually said "The earnings have been properly recorded in my company accounts and all taxes are up to date".

That's actually him saying he DID know about these payments.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,876 ✭✭✭bokale

Yeah that's how I read it too.

Tubridy admits he new he was getting these payments but is saying he doesn't know why rte didn't report them. I find that disingenuous as he must know they were trying to make out to the public that he was taking cuts etc.

Did Tubridy as director of company have any involvement in the invoicing and treatment of these payments:

Mr Tubridy was paid €150,000, but the cost to RTÉ was €230,000 including €80,000 in fees.

It appears that Tubridy really is being hung because he didn’t speak up.

By speak up, how exactly does this work? What exactly was he to do.. announce it to all of us on his radio or tv show?

Could it be that he wasn’t aware of what exactly he should or should not have done had he known or not known if there was some real issue here?

I think before he’s thrown to the wolves, maybe a proper investigation into what happened and what was meant to happen needs to be established.

No, and even if you did have me in ignore you appear to be getting a post by post update by sms so you are being circumventing your own ignore setting 🤣

  • Registered Users Posts: 29,282 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

He was a director of the company involved. A commentator on current affairs.

    Yes he should have known.

And isn't that what Tubridy said in his friday statement - he should have spoken up?

So if he is insincere in that statement, you're now accusing him of being a liar.

People are saying Tubridy must have had talent to have made it to being the highest paid presenter on RTE. That's stands for or should I say stood for Ryan Tubridy Entertainment just in case you thought otherwise. On a serious note he wasn't a good or probing interviewer. He came across as fake and phony even when dealing with misery porn which the LLS increasingly lent on for viewership. Lacked any true human warmth. Had the depth of an A4 sheet of paper. On the credit side he was good at the toy show and he dressed well.

Gay could earn the money he did yet still relate to the common man. He had depth. He could switch from the serious to the light with consummate ease. Some of his LLS had genuine historical and social impact on this country. He handled the unexpected superbly like the time when the lady who rang in to win a car was doing so on behalf of her daughter who had died the night before in a motor accident. His radio shows were excellent and would provide wonderful historic insight into Irish life were they to be replayed.

That is true. You would think they would be debarred/ blacklisted / disqualified from providing services again. Similar to how canvassing disqualifies (supposedly) in public service recruitment. Substance over form matters and both NK and RT have acted dishonestly.

He kind of answered that himself

"when my earnings were published I should have asked questions at the time and sought answers as to the circumstances which resulted in incorrect figures being published."

Personally I think he didn't ask as he already knew why.

I have no idea how sincere and genuine his recent statement is. Only he can know this. The below could be 100 percent genuine, or it could be him saying it for the sake of it (contrition-damage limitation). Personally I don't think he deserves to lose his RTE career over it, but yes, difficult in today's climate to stay on. His apology below may well be very heartfelt

"RTÉ’s accounting treatment and publication of payments made to me between 2017 and 2022 contained serious errors. While I have no responsibility for the corporate governance in RTÉ or how or what they publish in their accounts, when my earnings were published I should have asked questions at the time and sought answers as to the circumstances which resulted in incorrect figures being published.

"I didn’t, and I bear responsibility for my failure to do so. For this, I apologise unreservedly."

I think what's upsetting people is it doesn't seem credible that Tubridy wasn't privy to his financial transactions. Yet in 2019, in that oft quoted Mirror piece, he stated he was taking a pay cut. If you have an agent surely they're going to inform you about what will be negotiated for you and you, the client will have input.

When there's mass outrage it's usually for a reason.

  • Registered Users Posts: 579 ✭✭✭batman75

When your in the public eye and your earning are generated from the said public optics are everything. Tubridy is finished as a broadcaster in this country. His name is muck. I would love to earn 59k a year let alone the 400k he was officially on. If he hadn't released the initial statement and had offered to return the 345k to RTE straight away that might have been the start of his repairing damage done. Instead he dug in with an initial ignorant statement so sealed his own fate well and truly.

  • Registered Users Posts: 29,282 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

If it is 100 percent genuine - it addresses your question as to what he should have done.

If he is saying it for the sake of it, then he is lying in his public statement.

There's no two ways about it.

Then he/she should contact the mods about them to resolve instead of bringing it up here all the time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,153 ✭✭✭saabsaab

There are no sanctions or penalties available.

That was his second go at a statement. His first was still wet from his attempted washing his hands of it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 312 ✭✭Strong and Faithful

Well since you arrived making all sorts of allegations about posters and quoting mods the standard has really gone down. There was very good discourse up until then.

It's not enough openly campaigning to have posters banned, now he's threatening the site.

    Bonkers.
