Sounds like bluffing but you never know with him. It suits Australia’s fast bowlers and their batsmen will feel at home. It negates Jimmy and Robinson but it definitely suits the England batsmen not named Joe Root and allows them to go six runs an over. Flat pitches have served England well in the last year.

Some bowlers have certainly a more slingy action than others but watching live Zaman Kahn in the live T20 Pakistan vs NZ….I’ve seen him bowl before but nothing ever odd about him or his actual action, until now..

looking back on YouTube clips, nothing either… but here he is using a modified slinging arm action to what in my terms would be to ‘ chuck ‘ the ball. It’s throwing or chucking not bowling, front on replay confirms.

the ICC rules are as confusing and murky in their application as one would expect..

“An Illegal Bowling Action is where a player is throwing rather than bowling the ball. This is defined by the ICC as being where the player’s elbow extends by an amount of more than 15 degrees between their arm reaching the horizontal and the ball being released.”

Certainly looks like chucking, more like 20-25 degrees offset without having to get the protractor out.

    New Zealand are hammered.

    Pakistan post a credible 192.

way too many dot balls and cheap wickets handed to NZ by Pakistan. Pakistan win the T20 by 38 runs.

only 17 boundaries in 20 overs for NZ

So NZ already 3-0 down against Pakistan in the 5 game ODI series… not hammered per say but all pretty convincing wins for Pakistan.

Later in the summer NZ have 4 T20’s and 4 ODI’s vs England…. They’d want to get their arses in gear..

just noticed 9 out of 11 of the NZ team are over 30… that’s not including Southee or Boult who are not selected

So it looks like we are coming to the beginning of the end of cricket as we know it. From being mainly an international sport where countries toured other countries, this latest distribution model just simply signifies that India is now world cricket and the game is at their mercy.

The IPL will surely expand from it's 2 month annual tournament eventually and players will become solely contracted to IPL teams. The growth of T20 cricket was always going to bring us down this path because of the much higher revenues than the traditional formats. Most cricket fans in these parts would much prefer the longer formats of the game but T20 is just getting bigger and bigger.

We live in a society where attention spans are shrinking. it was the American Psychological Association and their counterparts in Denmark who claim that over the last 15 years, attention spans of humans has decreased and rapidly continues to.

that is not good for Test cricket. Test cricket is an investment… time, effort and $$$

    in addition ODI formats….

    • cheaper
    • less physically time demanding
    • Less dependent say for an inexperienced cricketing aficionado, casual observer being properly nuanced as to the laws…look at any Test crowd and even ODI vs T20 ….Test and ODIs attract cricket fans. T20s attract lots of day trippers and borderline event junkies. A social event. VERY popular with families and young kids, the investment required by all, time, attention, £££ is far less. It’s not an accident, it’s marketed to those demographics … ‘families’… and those similar demographics…there are fireworks, dancers, cheerleaders, bands, people dressed up as dinosaurs or whatever mascot. Between innings obstacle course races, wheelbarrow races…with aforementioned inflatable mascots…

what are the guardians of the game doing to cricket ? It’s becoming a priority to run it as a business, a circus, a sport that uniquely requires investment from the fan….or did, certainly is departing its core values.. looks like a garish parody eclipsing the on field experience.

the guardians of cricket really have to sort their **** out but like in every level of society it’s now seen as a crime not to be pandering to families, kids and the 🤪

test cricket is the ultimate test of all cricketing skills, team selection, tactics, nouse, bravery, game management and performance over 5 long days… 450 overs…minimum if the weather is fair.

How long before international cricket lovers will be expected to invest in T10 cricket ? Happening in certain domestic markets around the world. Round robin tournaments or some silly shït.

Finding the IPL a bit unwatchable this year. Visit Saudi plastered everywhere, commentators annoying me, routine shot for six has Ian Bishop shouting Oh my goodness like he never seen the ball hit off the square before. The Ashes can’t start soon enough.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,410 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Yeah, that IPL circus leaves me cold….. I am really really hoping for a good Ashes series..

the aggregate score over the last 3 Ashes series is Australia up 10-2 with just 3 drawn tests.

its been a forceful return of Aussie dominance similar to the 1990’s when Australia were all over the English.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,829 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

Don't watch the IPL, it's amazing though, the super something or others on 194, one ball left, against the royal Indians, and who comes trudging in to donate a 6 off the last ball, to finish with 1-42 off 4 overs, and get the opposition to 200? It is the old reliable Chris Jordan, still stealing a living. Said it many times before, but it's a toss of a coin between him and Tom Curran for most overrated player in history, can't remember many worse ones

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,410 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Jordan was one of those players that looked decent in county cricket, a good county cricketer for Surrey & Sussex… at that level he could bat a bit too, three first class hundreds…but a few years ago he went all mercenary and has just been going from city to city, country to country, immersing himself in franchise cricket. since 2017 he’s travelled the globe playing for 7 different cricketing ‘franchises’, 7 cities, multiple countries….

    ******

So the Ashes, just looking at the schedule June 16th - July 31st. Five tests in six and a bit weeks…. Probably with the World Cup approaching it’s been shoehorned into a smaller window.

can’t see it doing anything but slightly detracting from the series….Stupid really, I doubt Anderson and Broad will feature in all 5 tests.. probably why they’ve picked a squad so heavily weighted with fast bowlers…yes Stokes has an injury although making positive noises in interviews, confident he’ll bowl and bat…

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Hard to make out with Stokes how injured he is. He always acts like he needs a wheelchair but manages to carry on.

Wasnt that impressed by Broad overall in the Ireland game. Pace wasn’t that great and didn’t look dangerous in the second innings at all. Robinson and Jimmy with Wood or Tongue would be my first choice.

Jack Leach out of the Ashes with a stress fracture of his back. I don't think the Aussies were quakeing in their boots about facing him but England management have a lot of faith in him.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

He has been fairly successful under Stokes even if still very hit able.

Who will they turn to? Will Jacks or Rehan Admed would be very exciting picks. Could go back to Moeen Ali, maybe he fancies it again. Fourth fast bowler/all rounder and have Root bowl the needed overs of spin is my bet. Cover for Stokes that way as well.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,410 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Moeen probably the likely pick going by what the media is insinuating…

Jacks… is a solid all rounder but he didn’t set the world alight out in Pakistan as regards taking wickets, so a risk. He took a five for and did nothing in the other 3 innings. In fact he only picked up a single wicket in the other 3. Ok so Pakistani pitches are not so spin friendly conditions but still. Would the English leadership be brave enough to allow him to resume his international career in an Ashes series ?

Ahmed... a seriously exciting prospect but someone so inexperienced going into an Ashes series, they’ve only 1 test under their belt. That said, no fear, no baggage….he’s 18… not 19 until August. That would be rolling the dice on that decision.

Moeen Ali… I’d say he’s the safe bet. Experience in abundance, a savvy cricketer… not a prolific wicket taker either but can certainly bat, chew up overs with the ball while not going for many. The downside is compared to the other two he’s a very ‘known’ quantity to the Aussies.

btw just as an aside, be nice to have a dedicated Ashes thread like last time ?

Australia vs India, World Test Championship final today at the Oval. Earlier start at 10.30.

Don’t think a one off game will change the fact India have beaten Australia in Australia two series on the trot but it should be a good game.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,199 ✭✭✭VillaMad

On a green pitch with overcast skies, both sides wanted a bowl. India won the toss but after Australia got through those opening 15 overs, batting has gotten a good deal easier and they have dominated. Always felt that this being in England would suit Australia more as India are used to more spin friendly tracks and having 4 seam bowlers for them is unusual. Understandably they are also missing Bumrah hugely for games like this.

Century for Travis Head there. Their batting lineup is looking as strong as it has been for a long time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,998 ✭✭✭✭Tom Mann Centuria

Moeen has come out of international retirement, so you and the media appear correct. Shows the poor state of slow bowling in the County Championship how few options there were.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Got to say Australia look very strong after brushing aside India. Only Khawaja in the batting side of things failed and Starc was the weak link in the bowling but Hazlewood is fit again so not an issue. Boland lived up to the expectations of bowling in England.

    Kind regards

What organisation, an organisation dealing with international sporting events, international enquiries from internationally based people in 2023 is asking people to call on international land lines for them to make straight forward enquires… when the rest of the planet for decades is dealing in electronic communications. Seriously…

    welcome to 1987.

Looks like a humdinger in the ladies Ashes at Trent Bridge.

Australia posted a very competitive 473 all out.

    England coming back strongly…

Well over half of Tammy Beaumonts runs coming in boundaries.
