I'd pay no attention to bookies; I distinctly remember, way back when Pierce Brosnan stood down, the bookies odds on Colin Salmon were slashed; all leading to rampant speculation about him taking over the role.

I can't imagine it'd take much money going on a particular actor to have the odds drop; a few "joke" bets on Comer, or even a few deliberate ones to drum up some press, and a bookie would have to adjust the odds from 5000/1 to ... well, whatever they sit at now. From what I remember working in IT at one of the major bookies, they will take a bet on anything and if they can't reasonably figure the odds will just set it way high.

I mean I like Jodie Comer as much as the next person but I think gender-swapping James Bond will result in a huge lack of interest in a new film.

Online calls for this type of progressive casting equals real life apathy.

Might as well release it straight to Netflix.

Pretty sure Broccoli was previously quoted as saying the character is 'definitely male'.

Is the outrage machine bored this week?

More like Bond casting has gone very quiet in the last few months, so someone's trying to drum up some publicity and relevance - and yeah, maybe a little fist shaking from those easily triggered.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,464 ✭✭✭Riddle101

I agree. It'd be better to keep James Bond as is and maybe make a spinoff movie with a female lead. Ana de Armas comes to mind when I think about possible spinoff movies as she was very good in No Time To Die, and I think there's definitely potential in a movie with her as the star.

Jodie Comer is 100/1 so the poster is either making stuff up or, at best, has fallen for someone else making stuff up.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,793 ✭✭✭FunLover18

I wouldn't want female Bond, the character is male and that is a key part to the character unlike say his race which is irrelevant.

Mission Impossible has this genre wrapped up? ,cant imagine getting off the sofa to see a Bond film

Not really. Ian Fleming created Bond as a British white man, simple as. I can't under understand some peoples desires to have actors such as Idris Elba or Rege-Jean Page  to portray Bond so as to appease those who can't accept Bonds race and skin colour in today's world.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Ian Fleming created Bond as Ian Fleming's fantasy, let's not be particular here. IIRC the books describe a man no actor has ever resembled - but coincidentally resembled the author. They were throwaway pulp books written by someone exercising their dreams, thinly based on their time during ww2.

Idris Elba would be a good Bond cos he's a great leading man, has a smouldering energy perfect for playing someone ostensibly sexual, and yeah it's a bit unconventional. But no two Bond ever looked like each other anyway.

its just had its time, remember that most of the audience up to the 80's would have found a TV remote wowzer technology so the USP was the gadgets and the glamour, the stuff that made it great doesnt now or has been stripped out, can barely remember who the villains were in the last few films. The franchise is dead as far as I can see.

How does his race impact his personality or who he is?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 640 ✭✭✭RickBlaine

In the first novel, Casino Royale, Vesper says this: "Bond reminds me rather of Hoagy Carmichael, but there is something cold and ruthless".

A few novels later in Moonraker, the female lead says this: "Rather like Hoagy Carmichael in a way. That black hair falling down over the right eyebrow. Much the same bones. But there was something a bit cruel in the mouth, and the eyes were cold."

Fleming had a drawing of Bond commissioned for a newpaper which also looked very similar to Carmichael aside from a slight receeding hairline which I don't think Fleming was happy with.

Carmichael was an American signer. If you Google him, you should have a good idea of what Fleming had in mind for the appearance of Bond, especially the younger portrait on his wiki page.

Elba's too old. You'd get, what, two or three movies out of him at best, before he started to look silly in the role. They need to go younger.

Oh yeah he has aged out of contention but just in principle, I think he has/had the quality you might want from an unconventional choice without it having no rationale. It's funny cos Daniel Craig, despite joining Bond in his 30s, always had an older looking face. He looked haggard even in Casino Royale.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,932 ✭✭✭✭Tony EH

Well, haggard should be the look for what is essentially an MI6 assassin. I liked Craig as Bond. It's just unfortunate that the films dropped in quality after 'Casino Royale'.

Timothy Dalton was probably the closest looks wise.

A very under-rated Bond and the man is a terrific actor, he's incredible in Penny Dreadful and 1923 in particular in recent years.

Dalton not only looked closest to Fleming's Bond, he had the "cold" portrayal down too. I've mentioned it before but I'd love to see him reprise the role in an "I'm too old for this ****" Bond - his Diamonds Are Forever if you will - really lean into Bond as being a sexist relic of the cold war.

  • Registered Users Posts: 226 ✭✭Muller1991

I would love to see that. A retired Bond living in Jamaica or whatever and is brought back .... Oh Wait that sounds familiar lol.

I would however love to see his Bond ( Dalton's ) get a farewell.

I think they need to go in a different direction to the last few movies, the big budget spy arena is ruled by MI, I think someone here suggested a return to Cold War era and make a period movie. I like the idea of that I didn’t really enjoy the last few films, I enjoyed casino royale but couldn’t make head nor tail of quantum of solace.

its gone stale and needs a new grab.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,322 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

The script would be easy enough to do: have it that General Koskov wasn't killed at the end of Living Daylights (it was referenced as an off-screen event so easily ret-conned) and include him in some plot to do with the invasion of Ukraine, as the only MI6 agent living to have had dealings with him, Bond is called out of retirement...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 640 ✭✭✭RickBlaine

The Bond films, especially the Craig ones, get an absolute fortune from brands for including the latest cars, phones, watches, etc in the movie. The problem with doing a period piece is that you can't get sponsorship deals for the latest products.

    my favourite ones are

+ On Her Majestys Secret Service (leave it alone, just like Jaws, no remakes/reboots please ffs, perfect Sun afternoon bit hungover telly)

+ Casino Royale (as good an opening few mins as ANY action movie I can think of...how he gets his licence, the artwork and music of the opening credits, the ridiculous parkour chase across the building site...just bangbangbang!) and Mads Mikelsen superbad baddie...as good as it'll ever get imo

as for the future it's hard to see one right now. they couldn't even really maintain the level after Casino Royale so how they gonna achieve it now? with Craig gone because he really carried the whole Bourne thing very nicely. and all the bs about black bond and girl bond and gay bond and whatever yadda? please gimme a break. the origin has to be respected. he's a horrible c**t. so for me Daniel Craig in Casino Royale was the peak and can't be beat.

the only one thought I had about a possible future was what about going the direction Disney went with Star Wars franchise in creating ANDOR? its a bloody good watch, highly recommend if not seen it. make a deeper weekly detailed day to day Bond, what created him? get into the various relationships, politics, and his nemesis's. a chance to develop some of the characters around him. etc.

How about a retro Bond with him in a coma but the main action in the 60's . When he recovers to today he has to continue the chase..

I've been a Bond fan all my life and I recently watched The Wire and Luther. I can confidently say that Elba has all the qualities that would make him an excellent Bond. For me a Bond actor can't just be someone who looks good in a tux but he also needs to have the acting ability and screen charisma to give Bond a strong personality and screen presence. He also needs to have an element of danger to him and be intimidating when necessary. Elba has all that in abundance.

I don't agree with casting a black actor as Bond just for the sake of casting a black actor. But an actor who is otherwise perfect for Bond shouldn't be discounted just because he is black.

Given Bond tends to follow trends rather than set them... maybe Elba could be Bond yet: an older version trying to find peace, settle down - in the vein of Logan or the John Wick movies? The assumption has been the new Bond might be younger, but seems like a grizzled version in his 50s might be more on brand with the rest of Hollywood.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 640 ✭✭✭RickBlaine

Elba is probably too old to have a long run of films like Moore or Craig but he good have had a decent trilogy but I think EON is moving too slowly at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,932 ✭✭✭✭Tony EH

If Elba is going to be considered he'll, more than likely, be around 52 by the time of his first effort. That's just too old for a James Bond run of movies. Moore was only 5 years older than that when he last appeared as Bond and it was beyond ridiculous at that stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,450 ✭✭✭✭salmocab

Moore was my favourite Bond, nice mix of misogyny and comedy. They were nice easy going movies, the new ones have felt too slick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,299 ✭✭✭saabsaab

    How about a Gleeson?

Met Dalton back when he was 007 in the Grafton St shopping mall. He was buying film for his wife`s compact camera. We had a brief conversation about cameras and left it at that. Didn`t even mention Bond.

I very strongly disagree with the idea of race-swapping Bond, but Idris Elba would be the only person I'd have made the concession for, as I think he would have been an excellent Bond. However, he is far too old for the role now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 524 ✭✭✭Full_Circle_81

On the topic of age, I would argue that a 50 something Elba is a lot more vital and physically capable than a 50 something Moore. No disrespect to Moore, but actors in general take much better care of themselves these days. A short 3 movie run wouldn't hurt at all.

And while the more recent Craig movies went out of their way to have more physically demanding fight scenes (brought about by the influence of Bourne), I usually picture Bond as more of a swift smooth operator, rather than a hulking brawler, as Craig positioned himself as.

In saying all that, I've no problem with them leaning younger instead. The tricky part is finding a young actor who has genuine presence and swagger....

I'd love to see Elba as Bond even if was for only two movies.

And for those saying you can't change to a black man, I say you'll forget his race in about ten minutes if the performance is strong and you are guaranteed that with Elba.

Elba is very fresh looking for his age too.

As for Carmichael, I think the best Bond, Sean Connery, looked very like him.

I could watch the Connery movies 100 times, just in a different league to everything that came after them.

Moore wasn't bad, Dalton was better. Brosnan was okay as was Craig. I thought Lazenby was quite good in his only movie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 640 ✭✭✭RickBlaine

Connery was great but Diamonds Are Forever is rubbish though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,933 ✭✭✭tesla_newbie

Roger Moore was a likeable guy ( probably not much of an actor though) but his Bond movies were pretty awful, I think Dalton was the best actor to play Bond and I liked both of his offerings, my least favourite Bond is Brosnan, I don’t like any of them

edris Elba would have been a good Bond but he’s too old now

Cavill certainly threw his hat in the ring with his performance in The Man from UNCLE... Suspect he's probably too big a name for the Broccollis at this stage though.

Richard Madden is one actor who seems to be picking his roles with a shot at Bond in mind and I suspect he wouldn't do badly.

Watching Secret Invasion which is not a great show but Kingsley Ben-Adir could be a good shout although he is late 30s.

Honestly never been hugely into reading them but this more just sounds like people getting annoyed for the sake of it. The book has been out since May, got reasonable reviews but also is most likely targeting an entirely different demographic given the fact the author wrote the Young Bond books. Now the usual culprits are getting annoyed by it 4 months after the release. 😂
