Brake Pads question

If I'm getting brake pads & discs done on a car, do the tyres need to be changed as well?

I asked for a quote for brake pads & discs somewhere and they wanted to know the size of the tyres and quoted me prices for tyres as well.

No, but your tyres might need changing if they are giving you a quote for it

No you only change tyres when you start to feel the grip is gone or the amount of thread left is low.

Wheel size has a bearing on what size discs and pads are fitted to your model , bigger wheels factory direct could have bigger discs and more stopping power with bigger pads.

Some cars may list 3 types and it narrows it down.

If they had inspected the tyres they wouldn't need to ask the OP for the size.

No mention of them looking at it as could have been a phone quote ?

Motor factors can do that over the phone as info to hand.

    It was an online quote.

    They didn't inspect the tyres.

I only changed the front tyres a while ago, so I wouldn't think they need to be changed. My back tyres might need to be changed due to their age.

But I'd like to keep the spend down, as they quoted me €400+ for brake discs/pads, then €130 per three (for mid range).

The original quote from the dealership was €800+ for brakes & discs. Which seemed like mad money.

    three=tyre?

    What's the car?

    €400+ for just front brakes?

It was probably a fast fit type place and they were cheekily pushing tyres as well without even seeing the car.

Some makes of cars have different size brakes depending on spec and it would sometimes correlate to the size of the wheels on the car. I'm not saying this as fact but it could be the case there are two types of brakes and they were asking for your wheel size to price up the job correctly.

Also, have you ever been to this garage before? They might have previously recorded tyre depths on file deferred from a previous VHC and are quoting on work that might be due now. You say you got tyres replaced recently, maybe they were low at your last visit?
