COYGIG - Women’s Football World Cup 23

The women’s World Cup starts on the 20th July with Ireland playing on the opening day against joint hosts Australia. They are in Group B - Australia, Canada, Nigeria, Rep. of Ireland.

I have to admit that I’m an occasional football watcher but I do love the World Cup. I think the girls deserve our support so I plan on getting bunting, etc, this weekend and doing up the outside of the house. Will you be getting into the spirit and cheering them on?

As I said, I’m not knowledgeable on who is who so I’d love to see some posts about the players so I’m better informed before kick off.

I think the whole contest will wash over me. I don't see the point in flying flags etc if you have no real interest up to the world cup.

Right bunch of characters in the squad and no shortage of talent or determination.

Katie McCabe is one of the most inspiring Irish sporting talents I've seen in a while and there is an awesome standard especially amongst the boxers. Quite a few other Irish ladies too that will relish the chance of a world stage to display their skills.

I've got the flags for the car windows ready and for the last few weeks am actively spreading the word of how important this competition is to us.

Katie should get that armband they ruled against tattooed on her upper arm just below the sleeve.

Some pair of legs on her the other night on the news, Jesus wept.

Australia are really good but there are other factors to consider, 15/2 will probably be the longest odds any bookie offers against this Irish squad, I wouldn't be much of a gambler meself but I'll risk the price of a few pints at them odds.

These ladies are out for scalps and for once the FAI big wigs have been forced to splash out on more than the cheapest plane seats for our stars

I see this thread has been moved to General Sports. No disrespect to the mods and posters on this section of the site but we’ve always had a thread for big events like the World Cup or Olympics in After Hours (where I originally posted this).

I don’t know who moved it as there’s been no mod note but I somehow doubt you would have moved the Irish men’s team competing in the World Cup to “General Sport”. Well done…… not.

The FAI need to conduct an independant investigation into Vera Pauw's conduct as a priority.

Their response to the initial report and the subsequent Athletic piece has been disgraceful.

Vera Pauw alleged that she was abused by a male years ago, with no evidence, and that's to be taken at face value. But when multiple others accuse Vera of physical and emotional abuse, then that's lies, it isn't true, they are making it up.

The Athletic article has allegations of Pauw grabbing people forcefully by the throat.

It's not acceptable.

There is more evidence put into the report and the Athletic article than Pauw's own accusation that she was abused. But the FAI were happy to take one at face value and not the other.

It's absolutely wrong. You don't know if those Irish girls are facing similar abuse but too afraid to say anything because they are winning.

But at least we have pjohnson to decide that an Athletic article with countless sources and an official report is "garbage".

That article proves absolutely nothing, only that one player had positive dealings with Pauw at the club.

There are at least 7 who have personal experiences with abuse from Vera.

It isn't acceptable, it needs to be investigated because similar could be occuring here.

Bought my kids tickets last night to the Canada v Ireland game as it’s on in Perth. A few of their mates then decided they’d go along too.

Tickets were 40 aus dollars so just under 25 euro per ticket

I was allowing a reasonable amount of time for the mods to reply to my PMs. I sent one around 8.30 last night to one mod and one about 1:30am to the other mod.
