is there PDC events you can go and watch the darts live where it's not the premier league nights? Smaller comps with less of the party crowd as such?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,821 ✭✭✭roosterman71

I don't think so. Smaller events have no audiences.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,789 ✭✭✭Dillonb3

Smallest ones that have audiences are the euro tour events

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,640 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

UK open would spring to mind. Not a small event at all. But will have multiple boards and is a lot more about the darts then the session

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,313 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Been discussed on the World Championship thread already

The game is a lot different these days in a number of factors.

More money more pro players. Players starting out on the circuit a lot younger

Better physiques by a number of players who probably have Gym workouts to help with there game (always wonder what best exercises are). Days of pro players skulling pints and pies over

More sponsorship and exposure due too social media

Ah now many of the top lads are still fairly hardy drinkers and most if not all have a drink before matches. The big difference now is the amount of practice and the amount of competitive darts now played.

Michael Smith is on today's episode of The MMA hour, madness! That leg has sparked massive interest in the US

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,038 ✭✭✭boomdocker

I see Michael Smith had his first competitive start as world champ this evening

Against some ole geezer called Abdulnasser Yusuf in the Bahrain Masters

That'''ll be one for the darts trivia quiz in years to come 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,640 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

competitive? Would dispute that, its just an invitational tournament. A bare step above an exhibition

true, I'll replace the word 'competitive' with 'televised' 😉

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,821 ✭✭✭roosterman71

But using "televised" in darts talk means it's a super competitive competition

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,038 ✭✭✭boomdocker

ok, ok an uncompetitive, televised exhibition 🤣

The girl that played for China at the 2019 world cup has died at only 31.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,789 ✭✭✭Dillonb3

Seen that. Also hit a near perfect 9 darter online few months ago

She seemed like she had the makings of a very good player. I remember that she celebrated the Swiss player missing a double in the World Cup.

    31 is very young. RIP

    'Sapphire Princess 'Sarah Milkowski'

Sky would be jumping hoops if she will ever make it big

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,310 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kingp35

She's rubbish, unfortunately. Doesn't even enter the women's series.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,310 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kingp35

I take that back, Milkowski has entered the upcoming four Women's Series events. As has Paula Jacklin! I never thought we would see her play in a PDC event.

They've changed the world cup to all pairs. Brilliant move which most fans have been crying out for. 40 teams aswell .

Great decision. Really improves the tournament in my opinion.

Interesting interview with Matt Porter on the weekly darts cast. He says the Grand Prix won't be returning to Ireland but they're going to hold some other event here in 2024, they're currently talking with venues.

Have to presume it's going to be a world series or euro tour event.

9 darter for Fallon today on challenge tour.

Just seen that, 1st woman to do it I assume?

    TbL

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,496 ✭✭✭Will I Am Not

Yeah, first on PDC circuit anyway. Fair play to her, she’s copping a lot of flak lately. She does come up with some big moments even if she’s not a consistently great player.

The eight players for the upcoming Women's World Matchplay have been confirmed after this weekends Women's Series Events. The draw is done by ranking so we know who is playing who as well. Draw is as follows:

    2023 Betfred Women's World Matchplay

    Sunday July 23

    Draw Bracket

    (1) Beau Greaves v (8) Noa-Lynn van Leuven

    (4) Robyn Byrne v (5) Rhian O'Sullivan

    (2) Mikuru Suzuki v (7) Aileen de Graaf

    (3) Fallon Sherrock v (6) Lisa Ashton

It is a much stronger field that last years tournament in my opinion and it's great to see Robyn Byrne in there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,821 ✭✭✭roosterman71

Greaves should walk away with it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,816 ✭✭✭TheChrisD

I think Aileen got lucky that her £1500 from the back half of last year lifted her into seed 7 over Noa-Lynn, she might have a chance at making the final as opposed to an almost guaranteed QF exit.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,789 ✭✭✭Dillonb3

Willie drawn against James Wade in tomorrow's euro event. O'Connor needs a good run to get into the matchplay

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,313 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Had a walk around Ally Pally complex when I was over in London last weekend. Very impressive place

The PDC contract is up at the end of the 2024/25 championship. Wonder will they move somewhere else then. The O2 or Wembley Arena could be tricky enough getting the availability

Hard to see the PDC rushing back to Citywest either for the GP

No way will the leave the palace it is the iconic venue home to the worlds at Xmas,I would not be happy if the ever even taught about leaving the palace

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,313 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Very true and as an added bonus the WDF have there world championships the start of December now

I'd say the Ally Pally train station is sum sight to see on dart nights

I'd expect it to be a commercial decision, in the same way they left the iconic Circus Tavern. If they can get a better deal from someone else or if they feel they can sell more tickets than the 3,000 limit of the West Hall at AP etc. I doubt they feel any loyalty to the venue. I'd liken it to the same way the Gibraltar events (darts, snooker, pool) got abandoned once the government incentive money stopped.

Having said that, I'd be surprised if they can't reach agreement to keep it there.

The final of the world championship is going to be on a Wednesday night. Ridiculous having the final on a normal work night again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,816 ✭✭✭TheChrisD

I mean, with the current schedule setup (sixteen sessions pre-Xmas for rounds 1 & 2; twelve sessions post-Xmas) they don't really have much of a choice in what day the final is on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,313 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

They tried the Stephens Day sessions a few years back and it didn't work so that's another obstacle for them in terms of scheduling

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,821 ✭✭✭roosterman71

They could start it earlier in December in order to finish on the bank holiday. Or even have an extra game per session in round 1.

Alternatively start it a little later and finish it off on the Saturday night after New Years

The main point is that they seem to want that delineation of the early rounds pre-Xmas and the later rounds post-Xmas. It especially avoids needing to split Round 3 across the holiday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,313 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

    nah that would kill tradition

Nothing beats the pre christmas darts

  • Registered Users Posts: 690 ✭✭✭US3

I just find it strange that final of the biggest tournament of the year is held on weeknights. It doesn't happen in any other sport.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,821 ✭✭✭roosterman71

If we want the final on the usual New Years weekend, then something has to give. Less games, start earlier, more games per session early on, splitting rounds on the holidays, etc. All should be looked at

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,576 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

Problem fixes itself after this year, so they'll probably leave it as is.

i.e. if they keep the exact same structure of the final on 3rd January then the final will be a Friday in 2025, Saturday in 2026, Sunday in 2027 and a Monday (bank holiday) in 2028.

This year and last year were the times they should have done it different. Last year they were hemmed in by not wanting to have darts sessions clashing with potential England semi-finals/final in Qatar. This year no such excuse, not good.
