Then it implies the lawyers have told them they don't have enough to name the actual BBC presenter.

But they may not have considered how drawn out this would become, and that by naming the BBC as the organisation, their reputation could be damaged.

I dispute very little of what you say but we’re talking apples and oranges to a degree.

Unacceptable behaviour is an in-house HR issue, albeit given it’s a public figure beholding to the public confidence, there’s certainly a duty on the BBC to conduct a proper enquiry and have a clear outcome. If there was enough “evidence” that such behaviour went on, then some form of disciplinary action should have been taken, quite possibly up to and including dismissal or forced early retirement or whatever. Public pressure and distaste for whatever the proven allegation (non illegal) was, may dictate the outcome anyway

We didn’t get that outcome from the BBC, but they do have a track record on cover ups and dragging their heels, so their non-action up to recently is absolutely no reflection on the seriousness or otherwise of what they were presented with in May.

It’s now up to the police, assuming they’ve been handed all relevant material, to decide if there’s a criminal element to this story- there are claims from the parents that money was exchanged in return for sexual related content since the youngster was 17- if true, that’s a serious allegation with a serious outcome. To what degree the police, right now, can unravel this story to get to the truth, we’ll know in time I guess.

A lawyer was on radio saying if the person was close to 18 it may not even hold up in court or be prsoecuted

    Sky News:Now

BBC presenter spoken to 7 weeks after complaint.

No senior executive or BBC boss was told about these allegations until July

BBC investigations team decided no criminality based on information they had

Only contacted the presenter once additional information relating to alleged criminality came to light

BBC investigation now suspended pending police investigation outcome

    To be precise:

THE BBC HAS been asked to pause its investigation into allegations that a presenter paid a teenager for explicit images following a meeting with the Metropolitan Police.

Yes but they’re been very cautious on what they’re saying and they’re insisting that they’re “enquiring” as to whether a criminal investigation is required- it’s not at criminal investigation stage at this point.

My guess is, there could be something that indicates a crime was committed but they can’t get to the standard required to call it a criminal investigation for whatever reason- maybe they cannot speak to certain parties or cannot get hold of computers etc that could aid this investigation- that’s purely a guess on my part.

Alternatively, they’re just playing with their pencils around a table and waiting a suitably appropriate time to announce their investigation has concluded because they have nothing to go on in the first instance- probably less likely.

The “more serious” allegations presented to the BBC in recent weeks has sparked this enquiry so we just have to wait for its conclusion now.

Don't you love the emotive language used by the rag sun. Parents of "The Child". - So will the sun admit to putting topless pictures of children on page 3 for many years? I'd go as far as stating that the sun has in the past published topless pictures of children in order to sell to and gratify its typical readership.

It was the mother of a young adult. The "complaint" was made in May when the girl was over 20 years old. The other "parent" is a stepfather and in the UK a step parent does not have legal control over someone under 18 that is the child of the other parent. And at over 18 they have zero input

Smacks of a parent wanting to find blame somewhere else for their adult child's possible drug issues.

If it all turns out legal from a law point of view, it's the parent who could end up in trouble. This is very much like the story in Emmerdale at the moment, moral of the story is, if your 16 year old wants to sleep around with sugar daddies, butt out parents, if they want to sell nudes when 18, butt out parents. A lot of parents, like Dan in emmerdale, don't understand it, but the law of the land is final, and parents who go after these sugar daddies will be the ones in prison.

It's a Male 'child' or 'young person', as the BBC are using.

Possibly - but it's the Sun that printed and pushed the story. If the parents had reported the matter to the BBC, it was investigated and nothing happened, you probably wouldn't have heard anything. It's the Sun that has the real problem here if it's all wrong I think

It was said elsewhere that it was a girl (but they could have made an error) - so maybe "young adult" is probably the best description.

No matter, it looks like the sun will need to start back pedalling

So the "victim" has said it's all lies?

I wonder if the mother is telling the truth but the son wants to keep the money flowing for their coke addiction.

TBF your man in Emmerdale was pretending to be a female on a make up forum, then tracked Amelia down at her workplace and home, stalked her etc.,

Anyway back on topic, selling nude pictures for money is that illegal?

The parents and The Sun seem to indicate it started when he was 17

Whomever it is whether illegal or not, morally wrong so I'd say career is over, BBC should have acted asap not a month later when The Sun exposed

Does anyone know if the Sun paid any money for the story.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,088 ✭✭✭Trigger Happy

They worded it carefully. They said that when the mother initially approached them she did not want payment.

They did not clarify if payment was subsequently offered and accepted.

The BBC are now reporting that a second young person came to them with accusations against the presenter.

The person in their early 20s is not linked to the original young person whose mother went to the sun.

They say that they met the presenter on a dating app and when at some stage they threatened to expose the presenter they received threatening texts etc. The BBC has seen those texts and this is what led to the suspension on saturday.

    The plot thickens.

Hmm. "when at some stage they threatened to expose the presenter"

If there was a suggestion of blackmail there then Mr X cannot be named legally.

"A young person has told BBC News they felt threatened by the BBC presenter at the centre of a row over payment for sexually explicit photos.

The individual in their early 20s was first contacted anonymously by the male presenter on a dating app.

They say they were put under pressure to meet up but never did.

When the young person hinted online they might name the presenter, they were sent abusive, expletive-filled messages."

Any fool clicking on a link to the S*n would want their head examined. Anyone posting a link to that rag here would also want their head examined.

Ah, that’s what we’ve been waiting for. Where there’s one, there’s others

Only a matter of time now.

Jesus. That's some extraordinary information to read from this situation.

Could there be a possibility that there could be more than 2 young people involved with this alleged presenter involved in this scandal if more information comes to light from the British media in the near future?

  • Registered Users Posts: 29,549 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

If "Mr X" from the BBC was indiscreet on dating apps and Only Fans type sites - there could be some more people coming forwards.
