    After Hours (1985)

    The music of chance (1993)

These two movies have stuck in my head over the years. The actors in The music of chance are really strong.

Also True Romance (1993), a cracker of a movie.

Still good movies made imo if you ignore the Marvel tripe/remake tripe.

A lot of great foreign language movies have been mentioned already.

    Couple more -

    Loveless (2017) (Russian)

    Memories of Murder (2003) (Korean)

The Motorcycle Diaries. A great film about a young medical student and his friend travelling from Argentina through South America. And the inequalities of imperialism . The young man became a doctor and was the major reason why Cuba had a great health system. The young man was Ernesto Guerva de la Serna Lynch . Or as he became known Che.

    others to watch

    The Departed

    Into the Wild

Road to Perdition (only watched it last year - fantastic)

Goodbye, Lenin. German comedy about the fall of the Berlin Wall. Genuinely funny

More recent one worth watching - Dolemite is my name starring Eddie Murphy.

Some of my favourite film noir on that list. Yes that Orson Wells accent is legendary for all the wrong reasons.

I will throw in Battleground(1949), a great war movie about the Battle of the Bulge

The Big Heat(1953) another classic film noir

The Best years of our lives(1946) fantastic movie about 3 soldiers returning to ordinary life after WW2.

Has anybody mentioned any Billy Wilder yet

Some Like it Hot(1959) The Apartment(1960) Sunset Boulevard(1950)

Beginning to lose hope one of my all time favourites don't get a mention then I see someone post True Romance - one of the greatest cast of actors ever assembled. Astonishing the amount of big names in this film. Coupled with of the the greatest scenes, Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken, the sicilian scene. Brilliant movie.

    Unforgiven ( 1992 )

    Empire of the Sun ( 1987 )

    The Cassandra Crossing ( 1976 )

Oh Brother Where Art Thou ( 2000 )

    The Wizard of Oz ( 1936 )

    9 1/2 weeks (1986 )

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

    Alien ( 1979 )

You could be here all night. But most importantly, get your arses off sites that claim to amalgamate critics's choices. Not because of their sinister motivations for marketing contemporary dross, but because critics are generally just chunts? They will outdo each other to malign a production to achieve their own futile vanity. There are ooooooodles of great movies with abysmal ratings, that are victims of ill-conceived, thoughtless, bland diatribe, written by arseholes who regrettably were utilised by morons who hadn't the ability to make up their own mind, it happens everywhere.

Honourable mention to The Great Train Robbery , the one with Sean Connery and Donald Sutherland and of course Lesley Anne Down looking as fit as **** in 19th century underwear and see through low flying blouses.

I know what you mean OP. I feel like the there's nothing for me in the cinema the majority of the year now. Superheroes seem to dominate and there's maybe two decent options a year outside that.

    My favourite oldies are:

    • The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
    • The African Queen
    • Heaven Knows, Mr Allison
    • Kelly's Heroes
    • The Blue Max
    • The Night of the Hunter

These are the ones I can't resist any time they're on TV.

A couple of recent ones that have stood up to re-watching a few times for me are:

    The Drop

    Hell or High Water

Shampoo (1975) - Great script (Hal Ashby), this film is a cousin of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood if you read about their backgrounds but actually better IMHO.

I only watched that recently for the first time.

From the name and images I thought I was in for a cheap, cheese piece of nonsense.

it's actually very very good. Like surprisingly 'how have I never seen this before??' good.

Any time someone says Empire of the Sun I think they mean Man Behind the Sun.

Also a war film but a very different type!

Speaking of war, had the Russian war film Come and See been mentioned? A must for any war film fan. Pioneered shakey camera / silence and temporary deafness from explosions through the soundtrack before saving private Ryan.

Really harrowing stuff though but worth a viewing.

Trying to think of something that hasn't got a mention. But anything from Terence Malik, his movies are more of a religious experience than actual movies. Don't think Bonnie and Clyde got mentioned.

The 1970's was the highpoint of Hollywood cinema, until the excellent Heavens Gate broke it's studio, but the decline in recent times is acute.

A Bridge Too Far is my favorite WWII movie but rarely gets shown. An Attenborough directed all star epic depicting the most daring action of the war.

I'm a big movie fan so I go to my local Omniplex cinema 🎥 on a regular basis. Before I signed up for the Omniex pass which I might add is excellent value I would stick to two or three genres of movies such as Action, horror and comedy.

Now I go to most genres. First of all I find CGI has totally ruined the movie sector. And second it's been dominated by Marvel and DC super hero movies. I know movies 🎬 studios have to move with the times a I don't have an issue with super hero movies and I know they are box office hits but I hope at some stage all major movie studious will revert back to using stunt men and women when it comes to action movies. Wishful thinking on my part.

My favorite war movie is The Wild Geese. Roger Moore was excellent. Also I would recommend The Guns of Navorne with Gregory Peck. Other movies I would personally recommend are as follows:

Halloween 1978 and the Excorcist 1973 both movies lead the the way for many slasher movies and supernatural movies of today.

Regarding comedies I like to go way back to the 1930s as there were some comedy geniuses such as the Marx Brothers and of course the hallirous duo Laurel and Hardy. Both are my all time favorite comedy actors. If you haven't seen either of these acts I would suggest checking out some of their clips on YouTube.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 968 ✭✭✭waywill1966

Laurel and Hardy movies, absolute classics and the best comedy duo ever! The Music Box in my opinion was their best film!

  • Registered Users Posts: 212 ✭✭toggle toes

Brilliant 👏 We will never see their likes again. Pure comedy geniuses. As I mentioned in a previous post The Marx Brothers my favorite out of all comedy actors. My favorite movies are A Day At The Races and Duck Soup.

Not being smart with the OP or anyone here, but there are filters on various film aggregator sites just for this kind of thing. Pretty much the way I'd find good films was to head over to IMDB and filter some film lists by year, score, genre etc. It's really not hard at all. It's actually far easier than posting this kind of thing on a forum, simply because here you end up getting more recommendations than you know what to do with.
