Which adapter do I need?

Bought an electrical appliance from Amazon France. Obviously it will come with an EU plug. What adapter/plug will I need to ensure it works correctly here? (Is there a difference between cheapy ones and more 'expensive' ones in terms of current etc?)

Are there YouTube tutorials for this? I'm a woman - yes yes I'm playing the gender card as I'm totally clueless. Will I potentially electrocute myself? :/

A lot of appliances like kettles, PC's, laptop chargers, tv's, radios, games consoles have a swappable cable with connection and plug on it you could use. The advantage is the plug is moulded to the cable and it's tidier than cutting off and replacing the EU plug. Some devices you will have no choice but to cut off and swap the plug if the cable is hardwired to the device.

What item did you buy as specs might help to see if its a lead like above .

Those 3 pin ones for Tv and other things vary for pin sizes and spacing and might have to bring it with you.

Failing that you could get one of the cables mentioned or you could play the gender card and ask a male friend to do it for you

Thank you - you're assuming I have friends though..... I'm sure I'd manage to find someone to do it for me. Or I might just use an adapter for the time being!

This is the best type to buy, and is more permanent than your standard travel adapter. You just put in the old plug and screw it tight.

I'm guessing that a high current device like that Air Fryer probably has an earthed Schuko type E plug rather than the two pin one shown above. The two pin ones are more usually used for low current electronic devices.

Yes the Ninja Foodi is a high power unit and possibly wired into the base so its not a cable plug in.

If they were shipping it to a foreign usually they match plug to that country .

You'll pick up an adaptor like that in any electrical suppliers.

Those adapters are for low power units like sat boxes and not on a Ninja Foodi that needs plugging straight into the wall.

I would message Amazon and query if changing the plug would void the warranty as the unit needs the Uk plug for our sockets .

Sorry yes of course, what I meant was - if an adaptor is going to be used, a screwed in version is better than a travel adaptor.

Ideally, the appliance is rewired, which is what I'd do myself, but if you're going to use an adaptor, it should be a grounded type like below.

That Thoumann looks interesting as not seen one before and i take it that it wraps around the plug to convert to Uk source so no cutting involved so wont be having an issue with leads then.

I have a laptop that might like one.

Well spotted, nice price! You were right to ask the question here.

This uses 2470 watts and an adapter may not be the safest option. If you don't feel comfortable with a DIY job perhaps have a chat with a local hardware store, I find that they can be very helpful. Buy a 13 amp plug from them, instead of an adapter, and sure they'd be obliged to fit it;) Good luck.

Looking at that adapter seems a good idea and fused and no messing with cut wires.

Next question can you screw? i mean with a screwdriver to open the adaptor insert Eu plug inside and close and insert screws and tighten and its secured inside.

Dont be embarrassed as you were seeking help and not trying to do something your were uncomfortable with.

I have no issues if some women are smarter as we are not perfect.

Sorry to hijack the thread but did you ever get sorted?

I've bought a power washer from Amazon.de and they didn't send a converter. It's a 16A plug. When I contacted them they gave me 15% discount. I'm considering returning it as I am worried about the safety of it. It's not something that can just have the plug changed

Any advice anyone?

Check the wattage of the power washer - it'll be on the machine, on the sticker with the product number, serial number, etc. If it's below 2,990 watts, you can cut off the old plug and fit a standard 3-pin plug with a 13 amp fuse instead (230 volts * 13 amps = 2,990 watts).

It might suit Board.surf too, depending on power consumption of the washer.

That adapter is handy as wires are contained in the original plug and cannot move or flex as they do on a cut and fit plug.
