Ah yes, Nintendo catching up with 2012. Hopefully it means transfer of game ownership and backwards compatibility.

It's downright baffling that a company which figured out how to do a version of digital distribution to consoles in 1995 is still so absolutely cack-handed about providing anything even close to parity with modern internet services on other platforms.

It seriously boggles my mind that they could figure out the logistics of Satellaview back then, but today stuff that has been on every other platform for a decade or so is still like an amazing jetpack-filled vision of the future for Nintendo. (The only positive aspect is that Nintendo consoles don't have the risk of toxic voicechat in online multiplayer games...)

I can't help wonder how much of that is down to Not Invented Here syndrome in their offices...

Nintendo are always a company that remake 3, 4 really great decisions and one utterly bizarre one; if they don't give some kind of backwards compatibility they'll kill their next console before it has time to grow. But it wouldn't be Nintendo if they weren't behind the curve in some way shape or form.

That said, I guess it depends on what shape this next console takes, depending on its respective gimmick or USP; if, I dunno, it's a VR console then yeah I could see why backwards compatibility might be a blocker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,166 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

I don't get this though. The Wii U and 3DS had accounts, but Nintendo didn't let people transfer the ownership of the countless Wii U ports or all the various Indies to Switch. Or at least give them a discount.

I think companies are deliberately moving away from letting people have full ownership of their games. Be they released incomplete, day one patches, or in a lot cases with Switch, massive "download required". I can play my SNES games on my SNES to this day, no issues, or any other SNES. The same with any of my Nintendo systems up to the Wii.

But I think that's changed since the Wii U and now the Switch. Countless games have patches, TOTK had a day one patch. A lot of people hadn't got their hands on their physical copies and already it was incomplete. So in years to come, there will be issues that I don't face with 30 year old SNES games. Unless you have a system with the patches saved or huge "downloads required" on micro SD cards, many games will be incomplete or obsolete.

I think that's a good way to describe it. Built-in obsolescence. The Switch itself has built-in obsolescence, at least portably. The battery can't be changed.

Nintendo don't want us owning old games, because if you own them, then how do they continue to make money from them. That's why they changed from the Virtual Console to NSO. A fixed steady income that's only for rentals, as opposed to a once off payment. Besides they couldn't keep flogging that horse of selling the same VC games to us for a 3rd generation straight. And going the NSO rental route, they could hold their hands up and say you couldn't transfer VC games you already purchased.

I believe it will be expanded upon in future generations. We won't own even current generation games, at least some of them. I think games like Mario Kart and Smash Bros. will become live services. You'll pay a fee for access, it'll be a bit like how NSO is now. You only have access as long as you're subscribed and you'll pay more for bonus content. There will be various tiers. I think games companies can't wait for an all digital future, because then they will have complete control.

No need to pay retailers, no physical costs, shipping, manufacturing, etc. No secondhand market, maybe eliminate piracy. Complete control over pricing. Not worrying about some people not buying a game because they already own a 30 year old copy.

Nintendo will do something I'm sure of it, to try and get money from people even if there is backwards compatibility. Having backwards compatibility is fine as a selling point for buying the new system. But Nintendo make the bulk of their profits from software sales. Someone who bought e.g. Super Mario Odyssey for Switch and playing on the Switch successor isn't earning Nintendo anything and possibly stifling future software sales. The new hardware should inherently allow Switch games to run at higher frame rates and resolutions. I can see Nintendo playing gatekeeper and charging for that privilege, for no other reason than because they can. They already gatekeep by charging to play online on Switch even though they do nothing.

It will be interesting to see what they do either way. I think I've covered most of the points I wanted to make but might make some edits.

Activision-Blizzard CEO says the next Nintendo system is close to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One power-wise

Hopefully it's the Pro models of those consoles at least. The base models released in 2013. They do know at Nintendo HQ that it's 2023, right? Like this isn't hanging on their wall?

No surprise at all. If it’s a handheld form factor, that is exactly the power level that should be expected from looking at more modern (and more expensive) devices like the Steam Deck. Handheld is always going to restrict power draw and leave a device a generation or so behind cutting edge home consoles.

That said, a modern chipset, upscaling and maybe even an upgraded dock could see it run more modern games more than capably, albeit with some inevitable graphical and performance compromises. It’s impressive what the SD can run with the right settings.

What a terrible article that doesn’t even report what he said and makes assumptions.

    Try this instead

“I think we would consider [putting Call of Duty on the Switch’s successor] once we had the specs but we don’t have any at present”.

    and

“Given closer alignment of Gen 8 platforms and our previous offerings on PS4 and Xbox One, it’s reasonable to assume we can make something compelling for NG [next-gen] Switch as well.”

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,312 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Nintendo must be hearing all this wondering what their future plans have to do with the case.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,166 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Nintendo hasn’t asked for Mortal Kombat characters to appear in Smash Bros.

Super Smash Bros. has brought in characters from all sorts of legendary franchises – including fighting games like Street Fighter, Tekken, and Fatal Fury – but Mortal Kombat has been left out of the mix.

Do you know what the ironic thing is? Switch has had a new Mortal Kombat game, it hasn't from the others. I've said it before, there's a lot of guest 3rd party characters in Smash that don't deserve to be, having had little to no history on Nintendo consoles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,312 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

I'd be more surprised at the lack of Resident Evil or even Ace Attorney characters than Mortal Kombat especially since they try and work something in that relates to be what they're known for. So can't see them having Sub Zero rip out Mario's spine, since violence and Fatalities are what the franchise is best known for.

Though now curious how that would work for Kirby.

Be interesting to see how they market a straight upgrade a la the GCN or SNES as it's been so long since they even attempted to sell something on improved specs alone, the odd 3DS/DS redesign notwithstanding.

The delineation may be in the controller. The rumour above notes that the dev kit does not include controllers. Differentiating in the control scheme has been Nintendos thing for decades in both console and handheld systems.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,166 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

The best bit I take from the rumour is this:

"they are using the pro controller with the devkit, not the controllers because they do not want it to leak under any circumstances".

I cannot express adequately enough how much I detest the Joy-Cons. They're the worst Nintendo controller ever, no mean feat for Nintendo's most expensive controller ever. They are tiny pieces of 💩. They're uncomfortable to hold, tiny control sticks, no d pad, tiny buttons, tiny shoulder buttons(no analogue triggers) and they feel cheap.

If you want a good way to play, you've to spend another €65 on the Pro Controller. Which itself isn't perfect. The Pro Controller was around €90 I think at launch, and a pair of Joy-Cons were €110 iirc. They have come down in price since though.

    Master of the Universe

I suppose a compromise had to be met to allow the handheld / docking console concept to work.

I wouldn't want anything bigger than the joycon sized sticks/buttons on a Switch when it's in handheld mode. As you said, you can just use a pro controller then when it's docked.

Saying that, the omission of a D pad an the drift issue which still persists to this day are really big annoyances.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,415 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

Agree re joycons. They should at least offer a Switch with either a pro controller or joycons, based on your preferred play style, either docked or mobile.

    Hey,

my son's Switch console has experienced the 'blue screen of death' (I didn't even know blue screen of death was a thing for the Switch until it happened!!)

I had a look online and didn't find much.. tried a method of letting the battery completely run flat, then pressing the on/off button, and then plugging it into its charger again... but nothing, still blue screen of death!!

Would anyone know any other things to try to maybe fix/restore it? or is it completely goosed? Also are there reputable repair options available (North Dublin).

And lastly, if it is indeed goosed, would there be any way to extract the game data from it to put onto a new console (if we go down that route)? It would be mainly for his Minecraft stuff as he has some quite extensive worlds built up...

I set up a Nintendo account when he got the console (Christmas 2021), so would any of the data have been backed up in some way?

Also with the console being only 18 months old, would there be any warranty available on it? (bought from Argos who are now gone from Ireland).

    Appreciate any help..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,452 ✭✭✭Irish Halo

That's not good, I'd never heard of that either.

    You should have a 24 month warranty - https://fs-prod-cdn.nintendo-europe.com/media/downloads/support_1/nintendoswitch/NSwitch_HardwareWarranty_EN.pdf

Contact Nintendo support they should be able to help - https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Support/Contact/General-Customer-Service/Contact-Us-1106389.html#/

Save data is only backed up online if you have a paid for Nintendo Switch Online account.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,729 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

Definitely don’t have a paid account so I guess the data is lost unless they can somehow fix/recover it…

I’ll get onto their support and see what I can do… I’m pretty sure I have the receipt kept, and I deffo have the email from when I reserved it…

    Looking back.

Switch Lite was announced in July 2019.

Switch OLED was announced in July 2021.

So I wonder could we see a new hardware announcement in July 2023.

    What if?

We could have been stealthily given the name of the Switch successor before it's been officially revealed. I know this is a stretch but maybe it's a launch game for the Switch Wonder this holiday.

Nice Zelda site on Nintendo.co.jp but has an English version. Doesn't look to have TOTK spoilers, but visit at your own risk. It does seem to confirm the timeline placement of BOTW and TOTK

Or lack thereof ;). Taking place in a separate timeline.

Picture of piano and candels from St Andrews Church Dublin Zelda piano recital last night. Was a pretty good show, but expensive for what it was and a ton of brilliant music from Ocarina of time just ignored.

The place was pretty full. Zelda has definitely become a very popular franchise after BOTW and TOTK, and rightly so.

New EU regulations mean the Nintendo switch 2 will need a reusable battery

The document states that the batteries in the devices will need to be "readily removable and replaceable by the end-user at any time during the lifetime of the product" and that: "a portable battery shall be considered readily removable by the end-user where it can be removed from a product with the use of commercially available tools, without requiring the use of specialized tools, unless provided free of charge with the product"

    The original source says...

    What you need to know:

    ■ EU regulation wants all devices to have replaceable batteries;

    ■ An EU official confirmed to overkill this applies to gaming devices;

    ■ Legislation won't go into effect until 2027, four years from now;

    Will likely only impact new products;

    ■ The regulation will likely face pushback from hardware makers.

So I'm not sure if it will apply to Switch 2 if it's already on the market. The Switch battery isn't consumer friendly to replace for the average person. All previous Nintendo devices that used batteries were, to the best of my knowledge. From the Gameboy which was just a straight forward plastic cover to the Wii U where the cover was held in place by 2 Philips head screws, and the batteries were directly behind the cover.

To get to the battery on the Switch you have to remove the kickstand first, then the back cover, disconnect the micro SD card reader, remove an internal metal plate. There's a mix of 16 tri-wing and Philips head screws in all to remove.

Plus, I don't know if opening up the Switch like that voids your warranty.

Wonder why it takes so long for it to come into effect. Even if they went with 2025, that would be enough warning.

Of course it would face pushback considering the number of people who just change their phone due to the battery not holding the charge.

If it doesn’t come into effect until 2027 and applies to new devices released after the legislation is in effect then it probably won’t impact the next Nintendo system but rather the one after that (if they are still doing the hybrid model).

Similar to the USB-C legislation that goes into effect at the end of 2024. The next iPhone model released Sept/Oct this year won’t be required to confirm to the legislation (though it probably will) and it won’t retroactively apply to existing models still being sold.

Nintendo's Mario mission: grab IP limelight as Switch sales dim

Very interesting read with lots of facets. The bit I focused on was:

"Corporate comparisons with Walt Disney Co. may appear optimistic. The U.S. giant is worth nearly $160 billion by market capitalization, while Nintendo is valued at close to $60 billion."

I think Nintendo is on the way up, while Disney are on the way down. So I think that gap will narrow. Though that largely depends on how Switch 2 fares. But they have lots of franchises that could do great on the big screen.

Nintendo Just Had a Huge Quarter Thanks to Tears of the Kingdom and The Super Mario Bros. Movie

    Some standout points:

TOTK has sold 18.51 million copies as of the end of June.

Nintendo said as of 30th July, a whopping 168.1 million people worldwide have now seen the Super Mario Bros , and as of 26th July, global box-office revenue hit $1.349 billion. That’s the highest ever for an original film based on a video game, and the second-highest for an animated film. “This is helping us build a lasting affection for our Super Mario IP around the world,” Nintendo said.

The eternally-popular Mario Kart 8 Deluxe shifted another 1.67 million sales during the quarter and has now sold an eye-watering 55.46 million units.

Nintendo Switch sales increased 13.9% year-on-year to 3.91 million units, and software unit sales increased 26.1% year-on-year to 52.21 million units. The number of Nintendo Switch annual playing users between July 2022 and June 2023 was the highest ever, exceeding 116 million users. As of 30th June, Nintendo Switch now sold a total of 129.53 million units.

The end result is sales were up 50% year-on-year to 461.3 billion yen ($3.2 billion), and net profit was up 52.1% to 181 billion yen ($1.2 billion).
