Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Considering we have a place at the table it's probably apt to have a seperate thread for this. Less than two weeks before our opener against the hosts. We are in Group B with Australia (hosts), Canada and Nigeria.

    Game 1

    Australia v Republic of Ireland

20 July, 11am (Irish time), Stadium AustraliaSydney

    Game 2

    Canada v Republic of Ireland

26 July, 1pm (Irish time), Perth Rectangular StadiumPerth

    Game 3

    Republic of Ireland v Nigeria

31 July, 11am (Irish time), Lang ParkBrisbane

For those not familiar with the women's game, we are currently ranked 22nd in the World, our opponents Australia and Canada are ranked above us at 10th and 7th respectively with Nigeria ranked at 40th. We wouldn't be expected to get through what is a tough group but I think four points is achievable and may be enough to squeeze through.

Thanks for starting this one. Considering how we fared against the 5th rated team in the World last night, I can't see us getting 4 points.

We played the 9th best African team a few weeks back and that game showed that our squad lacks depth. Very concerning is how reliant we are on one or two key players in the starting XI. If I was an Australian or Canadian coach, I'd be roughing up Katie McCabe at every opportunity. Its a bit annoying that all three games are non-weekend games. I don't think I can justify "working from home" on a series of random dates in July :)

What I read about that friendly (against Zambia, iirc) was that it was mostly a second string side, though correct me if I'm wrong.

The crap thing about this WC is that the time's are terrible for me. At best, I can catch the second half of Canada game.

It's perfect for the target demographic though, young girls.

On in the late morning while they are on summer holidays.

Watch the game in the morning, go out in the garden in the afternoon and try replicate what they saw on telly.

Absolutely. I'm lucky enough that I should manage to work from home or will be on leave those three days - so I'll be able to get my own personal commentary (there's really nothing like an 11 year old's running chatter on a game) and then point her in the direction of the garden to either get practicing or demonstrate just how she would have saved the particular goals.

I'm expecting there to be no grass left in my garden at all by the middle of August!

Not great preparation, must have been some dirty game to be abandoned after 20 mins!

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 10,797 Mod ✭✭✭✭artanevilla

Saw footage of the tackle. Didn't seem bad enough for the game to be called off so must have been the final straw more than anything.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,220 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

Think Colombia had already had two players booked prior to that tackle so were fairly rough housing for a supposed friendly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,117 ✭✭✭jacool

Reading a few pre tournament write-ups, and its looking tough for us. Its unfortunate the way the games came, that the most winnable one may be for consolation only.

On the BBC, they interviewed 4 people, and 2 thought we'd get to the last 16. Can't see it myself.

    This looks more realistic tbh.

The Canadian team might be a bit of turmoil with the issue about not having money, that could play into Irelands hands.

On a side note, heard the teams official song this morning.

Absolutely terrible. A totally tuneless effort.

Let's hope the girls are better than their song.

Super save from the New Zealand keeper

This will be a massive blow to Norway who will be looking for redemption after the Euros

Norway player down with cramp and her teammates pick her up and launch her off the pitch so they can get on with it. Love to see it.

Is there something wrong with the commentary on RTE?

Hearing lots of repetition and sentences being cut off, and commentary seems to be ahead of what's on screen...

Or was the repetition a result of RTE trying to fix that?

Edit: Jesus, commentary is a good 5 seconds ahead of the picture

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,933 ✭✭✭kksaints

Sound ahead of pictures for anyone else?

You can hear them trying to fix it when a sentence is repeated - they rewind the sound a bit. But then it just resets a few seconds later.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,159 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Starting to wonder if Tubridy was actually holding the whole station together at this point.

The player cut off 5 minutes during one of the hurling semi's
