    this is a great thread

reading it I'm severely tempted to accelerate things a bit and apply to drive and change my working life.

I have full car and bike and been putting myself thru truck since Jan (have the C test lined up in May) original general intent was C, CE then my D...but if I can get C done now I might go straight on to D and apply

I've been in IT for 30 years, server hardware was/is my thing I loved servicing and maintaining it and the operating systems but it's been a race to the bottom last 10 years now, all software based cheapest possible, haven't had a pay rise in I don't know how long plus this constant pressure to keep learning the next latest thing (not lazy, more you never ever get the chance to have satisfaction in being the best you can be, frustrating you always feel half-cooked) I can't see myself reaching the finish line anymore. glorified office work, also zero craic and nobody thanks you. just not what it used to be.

Just so you know, you don't need a C or D license to apply. Just a B car license and the cpc case study thing.

    Hey all,

Long time lurker here, and thankful for all the great information.

I had my own driving assessment and interview today, the driving assessment itself was straight forward, quite simple. The guy doing the assessment with me basically told me the idea here is to just make sure I notice the speed limit changes, stop/yield signs & junctions, and yellow boxes on the road. All in all it lasted around 25-30 minutes near the depot.

The interview wasn't so bad either, they just wanted examples of a time you have dealt with difficult people, how to resolve issues and so on. As others have said they wanted safety safety safety, and good customer service examples. They asked me for examples on commitment, interpersonal skills, teamwork, safety awareness, resilience, and customer service skills, as they stated in the email. The written assessment at the end was to write a report on an accident that occurred when a van hit the side of my bus.

I think it went well for me, here's hoping I get on to the next stage now. Best of luck to anyone who is due to take part, or going to apply!

I think I'm going to apply next week , Iv been wanting to change job for a few years now but after more than 15 yeas there is always that bit of trepidation about trying something new, Its like im happy to not do as well as i can because I'm afraid of doing worse,

I think its time to just go for something different ,

    Hi folks,

completed online assessment today fairly straight forward, anyone have an idea on when i should hear back on that?

also does anyone know if there’s a structure for rostering eg; 1 wk earlies, 1 Wk middle,1 wk late & 1 Wk nights or is it just pot luck what your working any given day ?

    thanks in advance

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,864 ✭✭✭rx8

Have a look back a few pages. Someone posted a sample roster.

Basically it's a 5 week block. 2 early weeks,2 late and 1 mixed. Then you have a long weekend off and start the block again. There's also a Sat/Sun weekend off at the end of week 3 of the 5.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 92 ✭✭AX636

The 5 week rota, don't ask me why the picture is side ways

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31 Darrenv25

    Thank you,

doesnt look too bad of a roster other then it being every 2 weeks before you get 2 days off together

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,864 ✭✭✭rx8

If you slightly crop the pictures they will be the right way up.

"R" is rest day above btw.

Got a call yesterday for a cancellation medical today, can't make it due to work but I am assuming that means I am in now, as long as all goes well in the medical.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 459 ✭✭martco

ok after yet another crushing day at work I decided to go for it, hopefully not too late

I have the CPC booked now for 24th May, immediately (if) I get past that hurdle I'll put in the application

(best I can do as I've already got my C test lined up now and have the current job and a family hollier thrown into the mixer too)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14 renalf

Got the email today for medical, on the 17th of May, it's nice how quick it's moving along. Looking forward to hopefully starting soon now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31 Darrenv25

For anyone interested in the timeline of application process:

    Applied Friday 21st April

    Online assessment Tuesday 25th April

Interview and driving assessment Tuesday 2nd May

    Medical Monday 15th May

Take out weekends and bank holidays and it’s 2 weeks in all, a lot quicker than I expected it to be.

Interview was quite relaxed and Handy enough, asked about my previous experience then it was a case of if you were a bus driver what would you do in x situation and how would handle y situation.

been looking thru some driver feedback on other sites…

could someone in the know explain the concept of “getting marked in” and why it takes many years to achieve?? (I think it means more permanent assignment to specific route/depot)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,744 ✭✭✭Midnight_EG

Marked in means doing the same route all the time, on set duties so you know in 10/20/50 weeks what you're going to be working. It goes on seniority, so the lower your number the better chance of being marked in. It's not all roses though, being marked in

Just got my d license learner permit after passing all other assessments & medical. I sent an email copy straight away. Any idea how long to wait for training after that?

    Tia

I have holidays too, they were very good working around them. I filled out application in February and got offered the job last week. They would of offered sooner only for the holidays. Good Luck

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14 renalf

I had my medical last Tuesday, 16th, all went well there and the Doc declared me fit to drive. Lots of questions about any health issues, yes or no questions and explanations, and BP and urine test, no bloods taken for me. Usual eye test reading letters from a chart and colour blind test, and the hearing test was quick too, different frequency beeps in each ear.

Received my D learner permit in the post Monday, and sent it over that evening. I got a reply saying thanks and they'll be in touch in due course.

The whole process up until now has been smooth and quick, yet it is only just over a week since passing the medical and the wait is at me already.

Got the job offer today, here's my timeline for anyone that may be interested,

I had the online assessment on the 13th of April, interviewed on the 24th of April, medical was then on the 17th of May, references contacted on the 1st of June and job offer this morning 2nd of June. My start date is the 3rd of July.

Best of luck to anyone joining in.

Anyone have experience with medical delays?

had mine on 15th May doctor said I’m fit and healthy just wanted one letter from my Gp.

gp sent over letter same day.

    have heard nothing,

DB have said that reports can take a few weeks to be cleared.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5 toescouser

It can take a few weeks. Next step is bus driver theory test & CPC test usually done in santry. DB cover this and book for you and that's why your waiting. If you've already completed that they'll ring your references and you sign your contract soon after. Good Luck

    Hey all,

Just wondering if someone can settle a small thing bothering me,

What's the situation with footwear, I filled in my uniform sizing and all that, but no where did I see anything about what shoes to wear? Is there any official line on this? Or what do others do?

    Cheers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,864 ✭✭✭rx8

Safety footwear is only supplied to the maintenance department. Drivers can wear whatever they like, with one stipulation that trainers can't have white soles.

Wear something you're comfortable driving with and remember that the yard will sometimes be wet and slippy.

Make sure your uniform is the right size because you could be waiting a long time for a replacement.

Can i ask after over time & what not what does the average Bus Driver make in his first year on the job ?

I know it'll change for everyone but around what would they make

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,864 ✭✭✭rx8

You will average €815 per week over 5 weeks. 2 weeks will be more because of Sundays, and 3 will be flat weeks. Overtime and rest days are paid extra. You can only do 11 hours overtime per week maximum. That includes your rest day. Basic is about 42.5k before o/t.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,944 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

Thanks for the quick relpy how much OT does the average person make .

Also does your pay go up every year .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,864 ✭✭✭rx8

You could easily enough get up to 50K, doing rest-days and a few hours without killing yourself.

There's a 6 year pay-scale. Years 1 & 2 are the same, increased for years 3 & 4, another increase in year 5 and again in year 6. Top rate is almost 50k at the moment, and further increases of 3% are due in January 2024 and 2025. This will put the top rate up to over €52K by the start of 2025.

Anyone on here a new driver

How are you getting on thinking of putting my CV in next week,

In a decent office job years but wouldn't be against trying something new ,

What it like on family life,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,443 ✭✭✭mikeybhoy

No need for any CVs as your work history/contact details will all be on the application form you do online.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,012 ✭✭✭Burt Renaults

It depends whether you like seeing your family or not. I know loads of people who quit office jobs to drive buses. Most of them eventually either went back to the office jobs or found Mon-Fri driving jobs elsewhere (less money, but a better quality of life).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,744 ✭✭✭Midnight_EG

Personally my family life is better, I'm in the job 4 years and see way more of the kids at better times of the day than a 9-5 does.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,443 ✭✭✭mikeybhoy

Is there much difference between DB and BE apart from the distances involved and urban vs rural driving? Is it similar in terms of working conditions etc. Anyone know?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,944 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

Just right now its the same thing every day in a office and any type of a change for a few years would be nice, .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 379 ✭✭TranslatorPS

Aside from the biggest one of BE still handling cash of course? ;)

In the context of working time: I should highlight that in the case of outbases (Mullingar, Wicklow, Kells, the like for Broadstone) rosters are built like in Go-Ahead – with the number of weeks and layout of days off constructed to match the number of duties in service, rather than what DB do with fitting in as many duties into a standard template and leaving the rest for spare men. Main depot rosters are built on the standard five-week template though.

That's not to say you have no prediction of your work/rest days, it's just that their pattern doesn't follow the standard one.

Whats the situation if a driver resigned and a year later wants to return ?

And you treated like a newbie all over again ?

Crap duties, lowest pay grade ?

What is the salary with Dublin bus at the moment

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,864 ✭✭✭rx8

Starting rate is about 42.5 K for years 1 and 2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,270 ✭✭✭✭DARK-KNIGHT

    Jesus

How many hours a week is that for?

Will Dublin bus get you your license aswell?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,864 ✭✭✭rx8

That's 37.5 hour week. Overtime is obviously extra, and yes, they will teach you in their training school how to drive a bus to a standard that will pass the RSA driving test.

Doesn't sound like a good one tbf...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,270 ✭✭✭✭DARK-KNIGHT

    A good one

    I work in healthcare

Hse contract and I don't earn that

I may look at driving if that's the case

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,864 ✭✭✭rx8

Forgive me so for jumping to conclusions.... it's easy enough to get to 50K + without too much effort either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,944 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

I'v been strongly debating going for the job for 3 months now,

I just can't make my mind up , iv a decent office job but im getting sick of it , just same thing week in week out i should never have bene an office worker,

Only thing stopping me is iv 3 kids and taking a small pay cut but i could make that back in a few years,

Like after 5 year what could you be earning per year ?

    Cheers Midnight,

Is it common to do much over time , like are you required to some times or do you do it by choice,
