Cities with two main teams - Do you favour one over the other?

A lot of cities and towns have two main clubs, which do you prefer (if either) and why?

Sheffield Wednesday or Sheffield United

Man. City or Man. Utd

Everton or Liverpool

Rangers or Celtic

Atletico Madrid or Real Madrid

Inter or AC Milan

Melbourne Victory or Melbourne City

Hearts or Hibs

Bohemians or Shamrock Rovers

For me in London, it would be West Ham over Tottenham, although the Hams traditional rivals are Millwall!

Nice little trivia question.

Manchester.

Manchester and Milan are the only cities with two winners of CL or European Cup. Both cities have also had multiple winners of Europa League or its predecessors (including Cup Winners’ Cup) as have London and Madrid. Conference League has had only two winners - from London and Rome.

A lot of football supporters will tell you how Irish people had a history of settling Liverpool and Manchester. However, overall they had a clear preference for Liverpool and United rather than Everton or City.

More Irish people emigrated to cities like Birmingham and London but their teams never had the same gravitas for some reason.

It‘s perplexing!

It’s not perplexing at all really. A lot of people will give you romanticised stories for why they support those teams, when really the fact that they’ve consistently competed for the top trophies will have significantly more to do with it.

Paris by a mile I'd say. Amsterdam would be another, then Munich might have the biggest success gap between teams

Two of my uncles moved to Rochdale in the 80s so naturally most of the family started supporting...United. Because we had family "over there".

It's not just Irish fans who are that obtuse. I knew a United fan who grew up around the corner from Old Trafford and regularly complained about people not supporting their local teams.

He tried to convince me that he'd have supported Rochdale if he'd grown up out there. I met here in Spain and, naturally, he didn't support his local Spanish team in the second division but one from a city 100km away that happened to be in La Liga.

You could say that about Paris!

PSG have spent vast sums of money and still are nowhere near winning a European Cup or European competition for that matter!

There biggest rivalry is Marseille or Lyon.

Other clubs in the city are Paris FC in Ligue 2 and Red Star FC in Ligue 3 (National 1)

I thought Forest and Notts County were close likewise Liverpool and Everton but they must be the two closest.

I don’t think City and Utd or Liverpool Everton play at home the same day but I often wondered how they work out the algorithm for alternating same city team’s home fixtures which are even more complicated when teams aren’t in the same division.

The Isles of Scilly off the Cornish coast, in southwest England have a Football League and is the official football league for the Isles of Scilly. The football league is the smallest in the world, with only two clubs. The league is affiliated with The Football Association of England.

But, Funchal on Madeira, Portugal which has two clubs (Nacional and Maritimo) in the Portuguese top flight (population 111,892)Both teams share the Estádio da Madeira, Stadium, capacity 5,200.
