Slaughtering Jersey who we have 56/7 after 12.3

pointless competition…..being made qualify against Austria and jersey….costs involved for irish cricket and playing worse then club sides…so far two teams who can’t muster 100 runs.

a real lousy situation formulated by the ICC

    Jersey now 68/9

I wouldn't be too critical considering that's how we were and even today still are seen by some of the bigger teams.

Teams need games and opportunities if they are to improve

Agree, I think the bigger issue is the ICC doing away with the world qualifier. We can count ourselves fortunate that Netherlands qualified directly. Wouldnt fancy a 2 from 3 scrap at the euro qualifiers with Netherlands, Scotland and ourselves.

That said any day Barry McCarthy finishes with figures of 3 for 7 in four overs shows the quality of the opposition batsmen. That said #2, Jersey look like batting out the 20 overs. 76/9 with 2 balls left

    78/9 after 20…

    3.95 the RRR for Ireland.

nothing wrong organising matches and helping them, experience and so on but competing in qualifiers…. Hmmmm

Around 11 overs and the Irish lads should be back in the dressing room celebrating. If they take it kinda easy.

I honestly expected better from Jersey though since Scotland only just got past them, but look at Italy today, they put it up to Ireland but were absolutely hammered by Scotland

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 12,782 Mod ✭✭✭✭riffmongous

So if the Netherland hadnt qualified they would have been here too? That's not good for the future anyway

  • Registered Users Posts: 39,570 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

    Correct yep.

Not good for future but never rule out ICC changing the formats

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,473 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

In the chase, each of our 3 batsmen chased down the total with strike rates over 100. Took just 10.2 overs….

anyway, Jersey with an island population of 103,000 people…. I don’t envision much in the way of an inroad into International Crickets elite anytime soon unfortunately….

The smaller non-professional teams tend to struggle with the short recovery times in a round robin tournament like this. They usually play better in the opening games but the performances trail off as they go on.

Jersey 114/2 in the 13th over v Germany. I think if Jersey win thats Ireland and Scotland qualified

  • Registered Users Posts: 39,570 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

In fairness to Jersey, they are improving. 3rd or 4th best team at this. If the world t20 qualifier was still in play Jersey could v well be at it as one of the euro qualifiers.

Irelands match v Germany today is abandoned due to overnight which confirms our qualification for the World Cup.

I'm sure everyone is watching the action across the sea but the Women at 190/4 with 8 overs to go. Prendergast on 70, hope they can put up a competitive total from here.

Two wickets down immediately after I hit send on the above

    Have the men qualified now?

Ah cool , maybe a bit boring they left the two massive favs to play last haha

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,222 ✭✭✭VillaMad

    Scotland 29/2 after 4 overs.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,222 ✭✭✭VillaMad

Scotland now motoring along at 98/2 off 9 overs.

A Campher over went for 22. Ireland seem unable to stem the flow.

214 the target, Scotland finish on 213/6

  • Registered Users Posts: 39,570 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

Balbirnie out 3rd ball for 4

  • Registered Users Posts: 39,570 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

3 down in the third over.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,222 ✭✭✭VillaMad

Disastrous start. Every newcomer to this Scotland side this year seems to have made a huge impact.

  • Registered Users Posts: 39,570 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

Stirling gone too, all four wickets to Currie

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,473 ✭✭✭MFPM

Adair batted well and without his innings Ireland would have gone down to a bigger defeat.

Ireland have qualified for the WC so the result isn't really important but Scotland are the first decent side they've met and they've lost. There's an argument to be made that Scotland are perhaps a bit ahead of Ireland now. Is that 2 defeats in a row to the Scots?

  • Registered Users Posts: 729 ✭✭✭wicorthered

A bit ahead?? Scotland weren't even full strength and that's a pretty comprehensive hammering, despite Adair's knock. The first decent attack they've faced and the top 4 crumble There's 3/4 associates ahead of Ireland now. Like I said last week we're closer to Italy than we are to any full member.

  • Registered Users Posts: 729 ✭✭✭wicorthered

CI went all in on full membership and got a bad beat. The promised riches never arrived, county cricket was closed forever and the tiny playing pool got even smaller.

We'll never have another Tim Murtagh for example because playing for Ireland will cost you your country deal. Currie that ripped out the top order today is English born and hoping for a county career, if he had an Irish granny he couldn't go near us. Similar situation with Australia, Nick Larkin choose NSW over an Irish career. Even Jack Carson born in Ireland choose county cricket over Ireland, how many caps would he have now if eligible for selection.

A small cricketing nation like Ireland rely on passports and we stunningly walked away from that.

Without Adairs brilliant knock…. 72 from 36, we’d have been annihilated. Six maximum’s in that innings… 52 of his 72 were from boundaries.

can’t remember if it’s ‘in a row’ but that’s our second recentish loss to Scotland…..
