Oh god… I hate the gear selector up on the steering column tbh.

Very very easy and cheap for them to go back to physical buttons on the wheel. The lesser, base spec Golfs have always had them.

You'd think he would put it through the NCT for the new owner?

My mind is just stuck in pre-Covid prices with a 3 year old model being 26-28k...

I know, it's really big money alright. Just ticks a lot of boxes. Tiny mileage, one owner, Irish car, great spec. I don't know much about these Golfs. I had a Mk4 GTI years ago but have been driving diesels since then. Are they a good car?

They're a great car. I had a 161 PP and loved it, sad I sold it.

That's a really well spec'd model, looks nice.

Really good spec and a manual which is now a dying breed. Not really what you could good value though.

Listing is gone, how much was the 2015 one going for?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,519 ✭✭✭ILikeBoats

    €22995 I think

Bought a 2018 R 18 months ago for e39,500. I was looking at a TCR a while back and i was offered e30,000 trade in. I'm not usually ignorant but i just had to turn on my heel and walk away quietly. I'm glad i bought the R now and have come to terms with the fact i need to keep it very long term due to the following reasons

the new r is never going to be feasible

the internal combustion engine is not going to have a future

the 7.5 Golf is imo the nicest Golf ever produced

Looking for some advice here from anyone that has maybe gone through a similar experience or knows someone who has. Since getting my 2022 GTD Ive had numerous problems with it, starting from 2 weeks after I bought it. Its been back into dealership multiple times with multiple problems, all electronic related, which leads me to believe the whole cars electronics are faulty. From the radio sound not working, to crashing and resetting multiple times per week up and until recently (with supposedly nothing wrong with it...)Ive hd the whole steering wheel and module replaced even, and oil sensor needs replacing also. The cruise control also seemed to think I was driving on the right for 2 days and would jam on while over taking traffic on the right.... (told nothing wrong with it). Other times sensors wouldn't work or errors popped up on screen etc. Most recently and most serious, the steering wheel basically jammed while driving 80km/h on a dual carriage way and with all my force could barely veer over and stop, scariest thing in my life!! On a country road I could be dead. Following this the steering rack (whatever that is) needs replacing. Ive refused to take this car back due to safety concerns and multiple issues. The garage is now discussing giving my deposit back.

My question is where do I stand legally/financially. Should I be seeking compensation or just take my deposit and run or should a discount be given on another brand within the dealership group? Should I be getting just the deposit back (the max 30%) or should it be the value of car now minus what payments I have made + deposit etc. Never been in this kind of situation so I really dont know. Obviously the garage will try get away with the minimum that they can....

    Thank you

How did you pay for the car? PCP or dealer finance?

Best try and get as much money back as you can as that car has serious problems. I don't think they are common issues with those cars but that car was a bad one.

  • Registered Users Posts: 236 ✭✭easyvision

Was PCP with the max 30% deposit, circa 17k or so. Ive never had such a new car before and was so let down by it. Once it became a safety issue I cant accept it back. To be fair to them I think the do realize how bad it is - they havent tried to really force it back on me and said he was going off today about getting my deposit back but I was thinking then should I really be getting more? Really put me off VW - had 4 other Golfs previously with no real issues. Ive had 2 other people I know who got new Skoda Octavias VRS , again electronic issues with all screens going blank while driving etc and going into limp mode. Also going online a quick search will show multiple people on forums with steering wheels needing to be replaced etc

That's worst of all these cars with computer chips. Even the new Honda Civic is suppose to have issues. I'm not sure if it is wide spread but two people on here had issues with them. Yes a Honda. I'm not a fan boy or anything but in the past I would have classed a petrol Honda to be more reliable than a VW.

  • Registered Users Posts: 236 ✭✭easyvision

Yes I really feel let down by a decently regarded brand that Ive always admired. Even if I had no issues I probably would have traded in next year to something different. The golf doesnt feel special on the inside anymore, its been cheapened down so much. The things that made people want a Golf have been cheapened down to the cupholders! Storage in the car is actually terrible and only noticed upon having the car a few weeks... miss the singlasses holder too. Its the details that make something feel special. Problem is there isnt a whole lot out there. Only thing Im thinking of is the 3 series. I would have to go up in payments but looks a nice car. I might go have a look at it

You are definitely not alone. The various forums and Facebook groups are plagued with people reporting similar problems and it’s across the entire VAG range. It seems it all started with the electric ID cars, the software and infotainment systems in those cars was rushed, very poorly thought out and riddled with bugs. Then they deployed the same systems across their entire range of cars! It’s been an unmitigated disaster and heads have rolled in VW over it including the CEO afaik.

I know that a common “one fix fixes all” approach has been replacing steering wheels. VW must be replacing steering wheels to beat the band. Seems it fixes it for some people but not for all. My Dad has a 2021 Tiguan and he had similar problems. Travel assist/lane assist errors constantly. He had the wheel replaced and touch wood, his has been fine since.

As for me, my MK8 has (touch wood!) been the most reliable VW I’ve ever owned. I’ve never been back to the dealers with it other than for one service. I have had an occasional infotainment system glitch or crash but so infrequent that I’ve never been bothered by it. And any time it does throw a wobbly, it’s brief and corrects itself quickly. So it’s very very weird that some cars are generally problem-free and others are riddled with issues. There doesn’t seem to be any definitive pattern to it. Like you’d expect your car being a 2022 to have less issues (bugs ironed out) than my older 2021 car, but it’s the opposite! I guess this is why dealers don’t seem to have a clue how to fix them. There is no pattern to it and replacing steering wheels fixes it sometimes but not every time.

Morning, would anyone have recommendations for a VW specialist in Cork/Munster? Thanks

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,050 ✭✭✭GustavoFring

I used Des Goldens when I had the Cupra. Couldn’t fault them to be honest.

Flew through the NCT, only advisory was the age of the tyres, still on originals!

So where I am now, waiting for brand manager to contact me regarding options. If I hand it back I’m being low balled n only offering 38k for it, leaving only 5k ish equity. It’s a faulty car that is being fixed again and again with issues all the time. I want rid of it, zero interest in it now. I really don’t know what to do, feel a bit sick tbh with a car I don’t feel like is safe and going to give more hassle in the coming months. I’m basically being backed into a corner of take it back or to move out of this car I’m going to be given a crap low ball offer. Rang CCPC and they advised the refund amount would have to go legal if I’m not happy with what they are offering as my use of car needs to be taken into account. The electrical assist went in the car apparently but I have no access to report between garage and VW…. I was told. This whole thing stinks

My 2017 Golf central locking has been acting the maggot on driver's side the last few days. I thought I was imagining it first.......so basically when I lock with the fob all the other doors lock and passenger wing mirror folds in but driver door does not lock and wing mirror does not fold in all of the time. Sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't.

The drivers door will lock with the key but the mirror will not fold in.

When i open on fob all other doors open and passenger wing mirror opens back out. Drivers door and mirror do not most of the time!

Also when i sit into car I get a message on the dashboard saying key has been found. That is what caught my eye to the problem

I have changed the fob battery and tried spare battery. Has anyone had similar before?

I can see the problem you are trying to lock and unlock the car with a hob. Kinda a big and heavy thing to be carrying around?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,089 ✭✭✭bennyx_o

I had the same in my R (non keyless) Sometimes it wouldn't unlock at all and other times it would but not unfold the mirrors. Latest thing is the locking mechanism on the fuel flap is siezed and wouldn't unlock (ideal when you're running on fumes!) so I had to break it open, but since then the locking has been fine

  • Registered Users Posts: 590 ✭✭✭theintern

Is your R an early Mk7? Locking fuel flaps was an issue in the early years of the 7, like 2013 and maybe 2014.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,089 ✭✭✭bennyx_o

No, it's a 7.5 but when i searched it seemed common enough across VAG cars

  • Registered Users Posts: 590 ✭✭✭theintern

Interesting, I thought they'd 'fixed' that. Clearly not!
