Hi, could somebody recommend a trail cam that I can view/get footage remotely?

Would I have to get a SIM from a mobile provider? Some seem to come with Sims.

Want to use it to find out what is running around land, foxes, badgers etc.

There are threads on boards but all seem to be old.

    Thanks

I bought the spypoint. Comes with its own SIM card. Works in Ireland, no hassle.you have to buy an SD card to put in it. Links easily to your phone. Sends 100 free pics to your phone per month. Pay a subscription, per month, to get more if needed . All pics are saved to SD card for you to view.

I had it set up very quickly, without any techno help.

Spypoint Micro LTE. That's all you need. About 220/50 max Euros

Installed Sim, gives you 60 free pics a month. Easy to set up via your phone or computer and I mean simple compared to faffing about with the Chinese Aliexpress models. Well-built and waterproof machines. Mine have been out over 18 months in all Irish weather. Very good battery life.Esp if you put a 12 v 5 amp dry cell battery as the external power source. Will last over 9 months, the internal batteries, buy lithium batteries and they will keep it going another 8 months. Will send SMS or pics can be loaded into the SIM card, which you buy. Very good warranty via the UK distributor who honours the warranty too.Got mine fixed by them including a new housing for free as it was" still under warranty" according to them.It has good NV capability too and doesn't seem to be plagued too much with triggering hot spots on the ground or wind and branch movement. Gives you day , date, time, moon phase, temp and coordinate as std info.So not much point in stealing one of these as the moment it is started it will give coordinates as to where it is. Pics stay up on the spypoint page and your app for 30 days for you to download or delete.Pay an extra fee per month to store them longer.

    Con

Installing new main software updates can be a bit fiddly as you have to download it to the memory chip, and then upload it to the camera. Means really pulling it in from the field to do. The free pics might be too few for some, and that's where Spypoint makes their money. All their add-ons to your app are pricey on a per-month basis. Getting a good signal sometimes can be fun depending on location.you can get an extended antenna, but like all Spypoint add ons its pricey, and unless you have zero signal strength, not really worth the money.

STAY AWAY from any of their integrated solar panel models! They seem to be the most problematic of the Spypoint range going by the FB page of gripes from people that have them. An external battery and a cable with a plug is an extra 25 euros at most from battery world or less on eBay and does the job just as well if you need it.

After 4 years with them and working like troopers. I'd rate it 220 euros well spent.

LM2 "better" on paper at least?

I saw Wildhunter had Spypoints advertised recently for €180. Think prices might be coming down. Friend of mine has a couple of Spypoints. Main gripe is lots of pictures of cows, tractors, moving grass etc. He even points them north to stop the sun setting them off.

Moving grass 🤣. Good lord, I'll have to be careful where they'll go

The spypoints are very sensitive to environmental conditions. You’ve to turn the sensitivity down. They’re brilliant tho for instant pictures. Long be the days of having to travel miles to retrieve an SD card to see what’s on it.

That's part of the game. Installing a cam at a good location is an art betimes. I've one covering a game pass and I will get some hot spot shots if the sun is in a certain position, and cattle crossing it too,or high wind will affet the tree which the cam is tied onto. But it's too good a position not to cover for deer activity. So sometimes you have to just suck it up. All you can do is minimise the disturbances as much as possible, but you will never get a 100% perfect location in nature. If you are getting a lot of false hits, try setting the trigger sensitivity to lower settings.

trekking to it to retrieve photos via an SD card was what I initially found on the old posts on boards about them. put me right off until I went googling them.

How does the spypoint brand compare to the hikmicro I see for sale on the sports den website?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,200 ✭✭✭✭Grizzly 45

It's made in China under Western supervision and quality control. Gen1 first attempt by Hikmicro on a trailcam.Does video footage as well. Looks like a Spypoint ripoff with free Chinese spyware no doubt.

Would an LM2 purchased in The States have any issue working here? In regards to the Sim or the battery pack
