Ooh I can't resist thrillers in claustrophobic, confined spaces. This could be a good wee bit of summer fluff.

Gotta admire Elba's workrate, though I can't imagine there's many actors with a longer list of middling output.

When I saw Archie Panjabi, thought another series of Departure

Looks good for a short limited mini series

Noticed the label on the armed airport soldier/police/security person at the end being CTSFO so googled it:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counter_Terrorist_Specialist_Firearms_Officer

A Counter Terrorist Specialist Firearms Officer (CTSFO) is a United Kingdom police firearms officer.[1] The CTSFO standard is the highest Authorised Firearms Officer level in the National Police Firearms Training Curriculum (NPFTC) and was established by the Metropolitan Police Service in the lead up to the 2012 Summer Olympics held in London on 27th of July.

    Decent enough start.

Thought it was fairly woeful personally, cliche ridden with some terrible acting. Like an average BBC show and definitely not up to the usual apple level of quality. Watched the two epsiodes but I'm done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

Only one episode so far but first impression is that it doesn't feel half as boring as some english made tv shows seem to get.

Had a quick check of the director / writer combo Jim Field Smith / George Kay and they seem to have gotten pretty high TV scores in the past. Woeful movie scores for Smith but they were a longer time ago.

    Jim Field Smith: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/celebrity/jim-field-smith

    George Kay: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/celebrity/george_kay

    Anyway..

1: Good setup for a first episode. A lot of setting the scene and who the big players seem to be. Overall story still a mystery and a bit of a surprise at the end.

Not sure what he's at, working with them. I'd been thinking he was going to try and negotiate them down but maybe he'll try negotiate a bigger.. money thing / prisoner exchange (total guess they'll be looking for a prisoner)

I'd nearly say it has a more Sky TV vibe than BBC - but would be in agreement !

I'll give it another episode though.

The only other series that I remember seeing Neil Maskell in was Utopia, and he seems to be playing the same character. 😁

Yes, me too. Like a later day episode of 'The Bill' (and the guy having the relaitonship with Idris's wife was in The Bill if I'm not mistaken). The 'extras' are absolutely shíte (trying too hard for their 6 minutes of fame) and most of the main characters are poor. And the usual feminist virtue signalling, with the working mother trying to manage her kids getting to school, but equally being the only one with half a brain in the Air Traffic Control section - with the men (mostly men) looking like complete dopes (apart from the Abu Dabia guy in his robes - box ticked there too!).

As for Idris Elba, case of no man can be better than the quality of the cast/direction behind him. Will stick with it, but it's poor stuff.

I think you’re all over analysing it. I agree it won’t be winning emmys and is a bit clunky but it’s good sky quality summer fluff. Agreed it is strange it’s an apple show but there you are! I’m enjoying it for what it is.

Now for what it’s worth I thought the captain opening the door was pants. The hijackers seem to have taken over the plane for gge craic because they don’t seem to have a plan given that Idris is calling the shots so easily. The mother/ATC lady made a hell of a jump from a random call to pointing to a full on terror threat I thought.

It’s pretty flawed but it’s kind of fluffy fun. That saves it imho.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,140 ✭✭✭✭ejmaztec

I know there's a lot of box ticking these days, but I wouldn't have thought that having the Abu Dhabi guy in his robes was box ticking, he was on his home turf after all, and not in somewhere like Heathrow for example. 😛

  • Registered Users Posts: 291 ✭✭TOMs WIFE

Ha, no, not what I meant. I was pointing out WHICH guy in Abu Dhabi, as there were a few ATC's without robes! And saying that him being the clever guy (compared to the white fool playing video games) was box ticking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,140 ✭✭✭✭ejmaztec

I think the white fella had an extremely high IQ in that he could play games at the same time that he was doing his job of keeping tabs on planes. 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

2: This is clever enough. The ending was a bit of *gasp* moment. I was able to guess the connection that

the air traffic controller wan made... well not her making it.. the two calls being made part.

Elbas character having a more subtle plan feels kinda cool

4 episodes in,, and it's 10/10 so far.

Also not suffering too much from the disease that is plaguing Disney and other streaming services..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,774 ✭✭✭Doodah7

It’s very, very good. Interesting that they can keep the tension going over four episodes so far and it is still not clear which way the whole show is going to go. Keeping the motives hidden is an excellent narrative device.

Thoroughly enjoying this. Up to date so far and it's really good. Love a bit of Idris though :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

3: The clever way this story is playing out is good I think. Following everything happening on board and it was all making sense but at the same time, there's a bit of

anxiety about who has just gotten shot. I'm like 99% sure it can't be Idris.. too far away from the head guy who just swapped the real bullets in. Has to be someone in business or economy, someone who was standing up and noticeable. just don't know though.

no way he's wasted a bullet

The Apple app on my LG TV is glitchy as hell with this particular show. Every time, the sound drops out completely after about 30 seconds into an episode. Have been watching on the Macbook instead.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 15,756 Mod ✭✭✭✭Tabnabs

It continues to be an entertaining show.

You do have to switch off a little not to get riled by the glaring plot holes, like in the latest episode the pilot carrying on in Hungarian despite clearly being told not to by an armed assailant. Sam appears now to be allowed to wander around the plane and access all areas as he likes. Also, thank goodness Sam's son had come to visit his dad when he did and wasn't at home in his mother's house, as usual.

Hope there isn't a season 2, the return flight from Heathrow to Dubai?!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Regional East Moderators Posts: 18,532 CMod ✭✭✭✭The Black Oil

Certainly sloppy. 'Yo Sam. Get back in your seat and STFU. Well actually, hang out in the cockpit during a big moment. First officer, what's the medical response phrase...actually, keep nattering away in Hungarian and we won't put a gun to your head at all'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,335 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

    Finished episode 5.

Is it good....not sure...is it extremely addictive... definitely! Look forward to it each week.

Lots of plot holes. Idris Elba could have easily retaken the cockpit at one stage! Him and the female pilot were left alone by the hijackers. As pointed out already despite the crap he has caused they let him flit about the plane at will.

The Max Beasley character is an absolute pillock, I need a tissue ah yeah off you go lol. She was barely moving and they couldn't catch her, useless.

How powerful are these two crime bosses? They seem to be everywhere.

Definitely do not need a second series, unless it focuses on a new hijack, maybe a cruise ship, speed 2 style ha.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,539 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

Only watched the first episode but I'm done. The stupidity of letting the hijackers into the cockpit did it for me. That doesn't work in 2023.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,764 ✭✭✭squonk

I felt the same. I have an interest in aviation so nearly jumped out of my seat at that. It’s just not credible. However I stuck with it and it’s actually a show I look forward to each week now. It’s really a turn your brain off, sit back and go with it summer show. There are lots of things that don’t make sense or that wouldn’t happen like that in real life It does deliver some fun drama though. What it does it does very well so for me it’s earned the right to be a bit stupid in places because it delivers in others.

Thing is, how do you get into the cockpit? Gotta write some contrivance cos yeah, realistically it's impossible given our post 2001 landscape - but the story has to happen somehow. It was bloody melodramatic but about as credible as any other necessary logic black hole. Same as with mobile phones; modern scripts have to write them out of the equation or the story's over in 5 minutes

Now that’s how to do a cliffhanger going into last episode.

How did none of the hijackers notice Sams hands were free when he held up the pen? Then a little while later, he had to ask the passenger next to him to cut him free so he could shake things up.

Yeah, I liked that the writing felt able to back itself into a corner somewhat. Good to see an old school Volvo too.

Ye I thought that too. They should have been on her long before she got to the road but hey maybe all the twigs on the ground slowed them down.

Thing is, how do you get into the cockpit? Gotta write some contrivance cos yeah

Easy. Pretend you have a bomb connected to your second phone which you will set off if they do not let you in.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Ok: then how did the bomb get onboard? Now you need even more breaches in security in the airport, more wheels to turn to get the device onto the plane in the first place.

I'm not saying the blackmail wasn't a bit daft, it's just with the nature of the location & requirements of the plot, it struck me as the "least worst" option taken.

I like this series but I think without Idris Elba it would barely get a mention. Elba is a very charming charismatic guy and despite a patchy enough record on TV/film he is still a “name” and can carry a show. Apart from him, the cast is very much Sky1 / ITV and feels it. The Max Beasley character, as someone else mentioned here, is absolutely dreadful! Total wet blanket. I’m not sure what’s happened to him since the excellent “Bodies”.

The guy released from prison that he was tailing was a bit of a cliche too. Hard man “geezer” with all the threats.

Anyway, it’s not bad at all overall, the tension is good and they’ve set it up very well indeed for the last episode.

As for 2nd series? lol…. How? Idris to do a John McClane and find himself in another “bad situation”? I don’t think so. This feels like a one season wonder.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,937 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

I hope there is a proper ending however they way these thing work I doubt it and will be left set up another season.

A proper ending and no season two on a train or season three on a cruise ship.

I really like Idris and will watch almost anything he is in but I actually don’t think he is a great actor.

Idris to me is someone who who just had huge charisma and is extremely amazing screen presence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,450 ✭✭✭JoeA3

Totally agree. I like him too and he seems effortlessly cool. But his record is patchy, either because he has a habit of picking duds or he’s just not very good?

There’s another film of his on Netflix right now, in the top 10. A very much Jason Bourne influenced thing that I’m sure he might have hoped would have led to Bourne-like sequels. But despite starting well I thought it was a really poor movie and it wasn’t received particularly well generally.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,693 ✭✭✭✭fritzelly

Well there is a bigger story there with the crime syndicate that they could easily extend the show and Apple are not left wanting renewing stuff

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,937 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

That’s what I was thinking however then the title of the show goes out the window.

Hijack season 2.3,4 etc with no actual hijacks.

I guess they could have called the show after the characters name but that had already been done by Idris.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,693 ✭✭✭✭fritzelly
