It's the classic bait and switch.

Makes huge claims, Republicans make great play out of it.

And the actual evidence doesn't prove 99% of their claims.

And none of the false accusations will be withdrawn or apologised for. Rinse and repeat.

because any lack of evidence just means “a coverup has occurred. Let’s investigate that”

the flow chart is very routine.

To be honest , Archers testimony kind of confirms the opinion that I've always had on this.

Hunter is a bit of a feckless "trust fund kid" fond of dropping the odd "Do you know who my father is?" here and there to smooth his path through life without ever actually managing to get his father to do anything untoward to help him.

That fecklessness was hugely amplified by his issues with drug addiction but again no evidence has yet appeared to show that Joe Biden ever actually did anything illegal or untoward to get Hunter out of trouble or to make him money.

It's facebook-official: the DOD is no longer trying to parlay with Alabama, and Colorado will be the new permanent home of the US Space Force. Purely a military readiness issue, the military literally cannot find recruits that want to sign up to just be assigned in Alabama, where the state restricts the rights of troops. I wonder if there will be more signups from Alabama now...

Meanwhile Republicans are trying to undermine Biden by still holding up 300+ to date military confirmations, including new appointees and promotions, even a new Marine Commandant. Yet they will attempt a gaslight campaign to say oh, Biden destroyed the military, etc. like they did with Obama (Midway through his first congress, Obama lost control of Congress to Republicans, for 6+ years Republicans in Congress abdicated their responsibilities to the Purse and often blamed Obama for 'not passing a budget' etc., and Republicans were happy to have it both ways, passing bills that ultimately austerized the military while simultaneously lambasting Obama for 'destroying the military' in both the 2012, 2014 and 2016 cycles). Here, Republicans will say you know, oh we have to do it for the babies etc., and why not this radical argument got them a lot of votes in the 2016 through 2020 cycles because a lot of folks rapidly want to manipulate government to outlaw abortion, in particular, at least doubly as much as they want to disabuse themselves of immigrants.

Its all an act the folksy Uncle Joe with the ice cream.

All an act, the truth is he has a foul temper and abuses his staff.

Is a Fox News reporter a colleague of POTUS Biden though? "That's a great asset... 'more inflation!' stupid sonnofabitch."

Reporter for CNN says POTUS will be "salty" and "angrily grill [his emphasis] into his staffers" - but doesn't go as far to report he is talking down to his staff. Angrily grill seems rather unique to talking down more like "Are you sure? How do we know this **** is true?" etc

Definitely was a day 1 stupid of him though to promise he'd fire his officials on the spot for going near that grey area with their own staffers though. I imagine that got watered down quickly once WH Counsel nudged him about peoples right to appeal in such matters, and given the nature of the US administration I imagine even ol Jimmy Carter cussed out a few staffers in his day, and you're just gonna fire some expert reliable official because there was a boiler pressure situation on a bad day? That will lead to more bad days. I would have advised him not to have said or threatened/promised that on his inauguration day.

Because of the Republican filibuster, there is no confirmed leadership in the US Army and the US Marine Corps.

Today House Republicans on the Oversight Committee released another memo full of years-old “news,” innuendo, and misdirection – but notably missing, yet again, is any connection to President Biden.

Perhaps that is because – as recently as last week – the House Republicans’ own self-proclaimed “hero” witness who was “going to be able to come under oath and tell us exactly what role Joe Biden played” testified that President Biden never discussed these business dealings and was not involved.

    • NBC News: “Hunter Biden business associate testifies he has no knowledge of wrongdoing by Joe Biden”

    • CNN: “Devon Archer says Joe Biden discussed ‘nothing’ important with Hunter Biden business associates, transcript shows”

    • ABC: “Ex-Hunter Biden associate Devon Archer testifies President Biden didn’t discuss ‘commercial business’: Transcript”

    • Washington Post: “Devon Archer said the opposite of what Republicans claimed”

This has been a pattern: time after time, Comer hypes up self-proclaimed bombshell findings about President Biden, and time after time, he fails to provide any actual evidence. Today’s release is yet another flop.

So after seven months of wasting time and millions of taxpayer dollars on their evidence-free wild goose chase, Comer is making it clear that he is shamelessly moving the goal posts.

For nearly a year, Comer has insisted – over and over again – that his investigation is about President Biden:

    • Comer at his post-midterms press conference in November 2022: “Our investigation is about Joe Biden. And we already have evidence that would point that Joe Biden was involved with Hunter Biden on this, so we want the bank records and that’s our, that’s our focus. We’re trying to stay focused on, was Joe Biden directly involved with Hunter Biden’s business deals and is he compromised? That’s our investigation. […] I want to be clear. This is an investigation of Joe Biden. And that’s where the Committee will focus in this next Congress.”

    • Comer on Meet the Press in January: “Let me be clear, we’re not investigating Hunter Biden, we’re investigating Joe Biden.”

    • Comer to Benny Johnson in February: “We’re not investigating Hunter Biden. We’re investigating Joe Biden.”

    • Comer at a press conference in June: “Our investigation continues. Remember, our investigation is of Joe Biden. It always has been. In December, when we had the press conference, or maybe it was the end of November, I said this is an investigation of Joe Biden. This is still an investigation of Joe Biden.”

    • Comer on Newsmax in July: “Joe Biden was involved, all roads lead to Joe Biden.”

But Comer’s memo doesn’t show anything about President Biden. And faced with his inability to uncover any evidence that President Biden did anything wrong, Comer is now explicitly moving the goal posts:

    • Comer in his memo today: “President Biden’s defenders purport a weak defense by asserting the Committee must show payments directly to the President to show corruption.”

But this isn’t the standard set by “President Biden’s defenders.” It’s the standard Comer set for himself and House Republicans, time after time, over and over again, for nearly a year.

Comer and his fellow extreme Republicans in Congress are now admitting they haven’t uncovered any proof of involvement or wrongdoing by President Biden. They simply will continue to spread innuendo and lies as they pursue a baseless impeachment stunt to attack the President.

House Republicans can’t prove President Biden did anything wrong, but they are proving every day they have no vision and no agenda to actually help the American people. For them, it’s all about partisan games and political attacks that serve themselves and get themselves attention on rightwing media – not about taking on the big challenges facing our country.

It’s time for these extreme House Republicans to give up their wild goose chase and start working with President Biden on the issues that really matter to the American people. President Biden is going to continue to focus on taking action to improve people’s lives, like continuing to bring down inflation, create jobs, and grow the economy. He will prioritize the problems Americans want us to solve to help them and their families, and House Republicans should join him.

WH excoriates the credibility of the comer probe after a new memo out this week where Comer all but admits they have absolutely no hope of finding any financial ties incriminating Joe Biden, something they've promised since the beginning was there and was the locus of the investigation:

Comer in his memo today: “President Biden’s defenders purport a weak defense by asserting the Committee must show payments directly to the President to show corruption.”

If you think that's a stretch, you might want to do some research into white supremacy and learn about the significance that the numbers 14 and 88 play in their culture. Quite common for those numbers to be in tattoos they get.

So you believe it was an intentional dog-whistle?

You believe that tweet was a somewhat (yet seemingly obvious) covert message to call upon white supremacists?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,004 ✭✭✭Yeah_Right

Possibly. Remember, we're not dealing with the sharpest tools in the box. But some of them think of themselves as super duper smart. So what they consider to be clever and subtle is actually really obvious.

Comer's pithy response to this memo is to attack the looks of the WH spox and double down on reasserting claims for which he has had to admit he has no evidentiary basis for.

    lol.

Thank you. Again. Although, I meant it tells me all I need to know about your stance, not about Robert Kennedy.

Personally, I don't see how the tweet, even compounded with the "disturbing" articles you have provided would convince me that it was his intention to covertly communicate with white supremacists with his tweet, but you obviously do.

    Which is fine.

Big news in that a special counsel was appointed to investigate Hunter Biden.

The reason why the MAGA crowd aren't jumping for joy?

Remember - Weiss was appointed by Trump!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 82,822 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

Republicans were so happy with his appointment they didn't even call for a recorded vote. They controlled the chamber.

    MEMO TO INTERESTED PARTIES

From: Ian Sams, Special Assistant to the President and WH Oversight Spokesperson

    Date: August 11, 2023

Re: One Year Since Comer Vowed ‘Credibility,’ How’s That Going?

One year ago today, Politico published a long profile of House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer in which he “emphasized it’s his priority to ensure the oversight panel’s work remains ‘credible,’” and promised that he wouldn’t be “chasing some of these right-wing blogs and some of their conspiracy theories.” He was “not going to declare a probe or an investigation unless we have proof,” he vowed, and pledged that he was “committed to ensuring both parties take his investigations seriously” so that he could “make a bipartisan impact.”

How has that gone for Chairman Comer?

In the year since he made these vows, Comer has unquestionably broken them. He has completely undermined his own credibility and the credibility of his committee by rushing to book appearances on right-wing media – including appearing more than 50 times on conservative TV and radio in one month alone – to tout breathless conspiracy theories and trumpet false allegations, all while wasting time and millions of taxpayer dollars on a wild goose chase that has turned up no evidence of wrongdoing by Joe Biden.

Comer has told big lies and small ones, from repeatedly peddling debunked allegations in his relentless attempts to smear Joe Biden, to trafficking in fringe conspiracy theories, to reportedly lying about something as basic as showing up to a transcribed interview with a witness:

    • Washington Post: “The head of the House Oversight Committee has amassed a flurry of credibility issues in a remarkably short period of time… The challenge for Republicans is that at least one of the legislators driving their investigations into Biden has repeatedly tripped over his allegations or offered claims that he couldn’t substantiate.”

    • New York Times: “And since the Republican aim is getting revenge and sowing confusion, not actually proving high crimes and misdemeanors, they may be able to use the obscurity of the allegations — and the need to plunge down various rabbit holes to understand them — to their advantage. Rather than make a specific case, Republicans are trying to foment the cynical sense that scandal surrounds Biden just as it does Trump. The point is not to hold anyone accountable for actual wrongdoing but to parody the process of trying.”

    • In February, Comer suggested without evidence that the Chinese spy balloon could be a bioweapon from Wuhan, asking, “Is that bioweapons in that balloon? Did that balloon take off from Wuhan?”

    • Daily Beast: James Comer Has a New, Unlikely Story for Missed Deposition

⸰ “There are plenty of reasons to doubt Comer’s suggestion that he was participating remotely in the interview. For one, in the official transcript of the interview released last week, Comer does not identify himself, nor does anyone else allude to his presence…‘There’s just no way he **** called in,’ said a senior GOP source.”

He’s stooped to new lows, from allowing explicit images to be displayed at a Congressional hearing to lamenting that President Biden’s deceased son, Beau Biden, wasn’t prosecuted while he was still alive:

    • During a House Oversight hearing, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez called Comer out for marking “a new low” for allowing “pornographic images” to be “paraded” in the hearing.

⸰ Ocasio-Cortez: “Chairman Comer, last October you told Time Magazine that you were not interested in the ‘sordid details’ of Hunter Biden’s life. You were quoted as saying that’s ‘counter to a credible investigation,’ and I agree. Sadly, that is a reflection of how low some individuals here have been willing to go in their efforts to attack the President and his family.”

    • The Daily Beast: House Oversight Chair Laments That Joe Biden’s Dead Son Was Never Prosecuted

⸰ “Fuming that the Trump-appointed attorney probing Hunter Biden hasn’t yet brought up charges, Comer then invoked Beau Biden and wondered why he wasn’t indicted at some point.”

Comer has hidden evidence from the public and the Committee minority, ignores when witnesses have contradicted his false allegations, and still insists that an individual who has been indicted for arms trafficking and working as a Chinese agent has the “credibility” to serve as a witness in his probe:

    • Comer has withheld information from witness interviews that don’t fit his narrative, including from the Committee’s interview with Hunter Biden business associate Eric Schwerin, who stated that he “was not aware of any involvement by President Biden in the financial conduct of the President’s relatives’ businesses.” Comer has also so far refused to release the transcript of the Committee’s interview with a former FBI agent who apparently testified against some of House Republicans claims about the Justice Department and the Bidens.

⸰ Violating his pledge to work across the aisle, Comer has also withheld evidence from the Committee minority, despite House rules that committee records be shared with every member of the committee.

    • Comer refuses to acknowledge that Hunter Biden’s former business partner testified he was not aware of “any wrongdoing” by Joe Biden.

    • Comer has continued to insist a witness has “credibility” even after he was indicted for illegal arms trafficking and working as a Chinese agent.

And over and over again, independent reporting has found his investigation has been unable to uncover any evidence of wrongdoing:

    • New York Times: “The Republicans conceded that they had yet to find evidence of a specific corrupt action Mr. Biden took in office in connection with any of the business deals his son entered into. Instead, their presentation underscored how little headway top G.O.P. lawmakers have made in finding clear evidence of questionable transactions they can tie to Mr. Biden, their chief political rival.”

    • Axios: “By Republicans’ own admission, the investigation into alleged Biden family corruption has yet to uncover specific evidence of wrongdoing by the president himself.”

    • CNN: “House Oversight Chairman James Comer, for instance, insisted that his investigation had unearthed plentiful material to suggest wrongdoing by the president, saying his probe was like ‘tracking a bleeding bear through a snowstorm. There’s evidence everywhere.’ The Kentucky Republican did not reveal the nature of any such evidence.”

In the year since his vow to be “credible” and avoid the conspiracy theories pervasive on “right-wing blogs,” all Comer has done is feed that very right-wing echo chamber with lies, distortions, and misinformation — eliminating his own credibility and proving his investigation is nothing but a failed, evidence-free political stunt meant to smear the President. He has failed to even come close to meeting the standards he set for himself and the House Oversight Committee and has trafficked in the same ugly attacks he once claimed were counter to a credible investigation.

The James Comer of August 2023 wouldn’t recognize the James Comer of August 2022 — so perhaps he should consider his own actions and reconsider these baseless partisan stunts. House Republicans should abandon these credibility-free efforts intended only to damage the President, regardless of the truth, and instead choose to work with the President on the issues the American people elected them to prioritize like continuing to reduce inflation, create jobs and grow the economy.

The role of the President in this kind of scenario is to approve emergency funding and provide the required authorisations to allow the right stuff to get to the right places. After that , their role is to stay out of the way until the work is done by the experts.

Anything else is performative bollocks to appease twats in the media
