Didn't think we could be worse than last season, but we are. Absolutely ran off the pitch by a very average Chelsea team,1 shot on target all game

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,067 ✭✭✭✭martingriff

In fairness so did a Chelsea player today, in the game before this there were yellows for assistant managers, 2 in the community shield last weeks. I hope they keep it up as it needs to stop

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,363 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

Alisson is so good at that.

Made Mudryk rush. Timed his rush to perfection.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,176 ✭✭✭Xander10

Thought if he was off the pitch, it was a new phase so to speak

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,037 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

This has been bad - second half particularly - but we had much much worse performances last season in fairness.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,654 ✭✭✭✭cj maxx

    Blessed to get that draw

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,120 ✭✭✭happyoutscan

    Chelsea the better team.

Not sure what this system with TAA is.

Szobo and Mac look like great purchases.

Point against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge is fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,716 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

Looked OK and probably should have punished them more in the opening 25-30mins

Chelsea the better side in the second, and we can probably say its good to get out with the point.

    We have issues

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,395 ✭✭✭✭Utopia Parkway

1-1 not a bad result away to Chelsea but I found the performance a bit disappointing. We weren’t great after the first 35 minutes. Thought we would go there and win given how many new players Chelsea are bedding in. Some old problems still evident. Bit too easy to play through us at times.

That second half midfield showing had all the hallmarks of last season.

Fernandez had our midfield in his back pocket from about 40 mins on. We desperately need a defensive midfielder.

second half we were fairly mediocre.

  • Registered Users Posts: 264 ✭✭505_

Pretty good result considering chelsea were much the better team. Main concern is that might not be a very strong chelsea team..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,388 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

Need to get Mac Allister 10-15 yards further up the pitch.

Get a DM and a LCB and it'll go a long way to improving the squad and team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,093 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

I thought he was off the pitch when the pass was the made. Unless off that pitch counts as offside? Maybe he just crossed the line to count as on the pitch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,510 ✭✭✭✭noodler

Disappointing end to a game that started so well yet so soundly second best in 2nd half that hard not to see it as a good point.

The two new lads look good.

We seem to be no further forward with a game plan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,406 ✭✭✭✭LuckyLloyd

This was more of the same, except our personal have objectively less pedigree and we don’t have a complete squad.

You were looking at a mid table side today. Your ability to control the game is the main determinant of how many points you will attain over the course of the season.

Could have won, could have lost it. A point away at Chelsea never a bad result. Lot to digest, none more than the midfield issue om display for the world to see. We move on........hopefully.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,797 ✭✭✭Ottoman_1000

Positives, Szobo and Macalister are ballers. Negatives, we are still horrific at the back, jasus we made one of the most average looking Chelsea teams in a long time look like peak Barca the way they picked us apart...

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,523 ✭✭✭Pepp1989

Sign a first team quality dm and we aren't too bad. Not looking at declining players but ones who can continuously improve.

Our composure in final third is awful thou. Few times the pass was behind people or lads passed instead of shooting. That MacAllister pass to nunez. Yikes. Not sympathetic

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,037 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Off the pitch counts as offside. Otherwise you'd have a striker standing off the pitch all game just waiting for a long ball to run back on to collect 😅

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 775 ✭✭✭patsy sally

Take the draw and run when they got level Liverpool never got back in to the game at all after that,

A proper DM that allows Mac Allister to float around midfield with Szoboslai gives a lot more ball and game control.

There's no ball control without a defensive midfielder though, absolutely has to be resolved asap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,797 ✭✭✭Ottoman_1000

Our defence is a mess tho, VVD is half the player he once was and Konate is just to erratic to play in a high octane, high defensive line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,502 ✭✭✭✭martyos121

Just sign a proven DM, get back to the 4-3-3 and ditch this dysfunctional box midfield sh*te.

That’s literally the key to not having another crap season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,011 ✭✭✭Mr Crispy

Disjointed and rudderless. The problems go deeper than the lack of a DM, I fear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,093 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

And when it's typed like that, I realize how stupid it is to ask the question originally. Been a long day!

All I heard in the second half was Chilwell . Midfield was absent and the defence was all over the place. DM is aa must. Adds shape to the team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,404 ✭✭✭✭Vicxas

Was listening to news talk on the way home and all I heard was liverpools midfield was ran through a lot of times.

    worrying

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,338 ✭✭✭Ardent

That was frustrating as hell. Zero change from last season, the same problems remain. If we don't sign a top DM we can kiss the CL next season goodbye as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,797 ✭✭✭Ottoman_1000

Well considering we had no DM and Gakpo playing in it, I don't thitwe could have expected anything else....

Trent speaking here on Sky doesn’t give me the impression of a lad who believes in this team an awful lot. I know that’s reaching for something that might not be there, but he didn’t sound confident at all.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,513 ✭✭✭Luxembourgo

    Actually enjoyed that

Was much better then the turgid shite that was still wide open last year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,388 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

And the other two lads played their first competitive game it's hardly expected that things would be without issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,642 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

A lucky enough point, take it and move on.

Defence was poor surely, but the middle 3 were poor, made Enzo and Gallagher in particular look like Xavi and Iniesta for an hour. Their 2 dominated our 3 for long periods, and provided a real platform for James and Chilwell in particular. We were really poorly set up, and really slow to react and change it.

The back 4 is a big issue, Virgil in particular isn't playing well, but no side can operate without a functioning midfield. We were like this through much of last season even with Henderson, Fabinho, Milner, Thiago, Keita et al available to us, so I don't know how we're supposed to be stronger now when we have this same sh1tty set up. Going to ba a long season, and the quality of coaching is a big part of it.

[Word of praise for the kids that came on, Elliot in particular gave us a good base with Jones playing a part, and Doak showed well and scared Chelsea]

Chelsea will be decent this season. That's a good point.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,843 ✭✭✭dmigsy

Agree and it was all totally predictable:

    • Starting the league season without a CDM is absolute madness.
    • Mac Allister and Szoboszlai will be excellent.
    • Trent wandering across into midfield has more negatives than positives

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,716 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Defensive concerns remain, Konate in particular is a real worry for me.

He is a physical specimen but really doesnt seem to have the brain required at this level.

Pretty hard watching VVD constantly backing off players and not putting in a tackle so nothing has changed with these two it seems :(

Robbo cant pass a ball to save his life these days.

I thought Macca and Sobi were excellent first half until chelsea dominated the game.

Sort the defence and buy a DM and we might challenge for top 4 but im not confident of that defence at all, Matip and Gomez would be even worse, its a sad state.

I was surprised that the 3-box-3 was not used as much today as it had been in previous games.

I wonder was it because Chelsea sprung the surprise of playing 3/5 at the back and the wide areas became more critical so couldn't be vacated as much.

Trent needs to go back to RB until a replacement can be sorted. Konate and Matip do not have the legs for it

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,523 ✭✭✭Pepp1989

I lost count of the amount of times Chelsea had the ball with zero pressure on it. I'll judge the defence once that stops happening.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,093 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

He played RB today. The only player that held a wider average position on that side of the pitch was Salah (and Doak's cameo)

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,843 ✭✭✭dmigsy

Who does have the legs for it though? There's too much asked of the CBs the way Liverpool are setting up. When City play a similar type of formation they'll often have 4 actual CBs starting a match (including Stones in midfield). And with one of the best CDMs in the world in Rodri alongside him. Liverpool started with 2 CBs, 2 very attacking full-backs and no specialist CDM. It's a bit mad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,654 ✭✭✭✭cj maxx

    Klopp up next

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,797 ✭✭✭Ottoman_1000

It's the defence that I'm more worried about. I stated it a few times but VVD seems well past his best ala Fabinho style and Konate does not look comfortable at all in this defence. He's great going forward and taking the ball on when we're on the front foot, but he struggles badly when things break down and last dash quick decisions and tackles are required defending the high line.

Was very impressed with Mac Allister today. Need to get him higher up the pitch though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,093 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

Definitely the first 30/45 mins he was great. I thought he tired as the game pevwent on though, but tbh the midfield struggles and lack of a DM will have contributed towards this as lads like Gakpo filled in,meaning Alexis had to do more covering / running.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,496 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

Both him and Szobo looked very good, and both slightly out of position. If we get that DM then they'll both shine, I'm sure

(Credit to Gakpo too, not good best game but thought he did well trying to carry out a strange remit for him)

Disappointed with Salah’s reaction to being taken off. He had our best moments but faded badly, we need a better attitude to being taken off from one of our senior players.

edit: ops Sarah is one of the dinner ladies and her reactions are always top class

Once Chelsea figured out where the spaces were, it was tough. But as much as Chelsea were on top for 60 minutes, and it looked inevitable, the CBs and Alisson did very well.

Without a DM, we are screwed against anyone decent. Sitting back like we had to is just not us, and is partly why Salah came off. He became pointless.
