The vast majority of "sci-fi" is actually space fantasy. Very little of the hard sci-fi genre exists on screen.

Look at alien! You see it twice (plus weaver in knickers!). Fantastic. Complete and utter scifi horror. Outstanding (still prefer aliens).

    Originality and cast. Again Outstanding.

James Cameron pitched the sequel by writing the word Alien, adding an s to indicate there'd be lots of them and then adding two lines to the s to make it a dollar sign.

He keeps selling out his own species.

Avatar and the Abyss was the same anti human propaganda.

I didn’t like ‘the witch’ from about 5 years ago starring Anna Taylor Joy. It had very good reviews but I found it very dull.

The recent Macbeth movie starring Denzel Washington was fairly awful.

Perhaps you quoted the wrong poster?

The Hurt Locker...i thought it was shite.

The Deer Hunter, maybe it was too intelligent a film for this dumbass.

Hmm...fair, it was never darkening the door of the Oscars but it's undoubtedly one of the most popular movies of the 21st century. Critics were fairly split on it but the public loved it. I think 'The Kiss' was rated the 3rd greatest in the history of cinema by a fairly reputable publication (I forget which).

It did brilliantly at the box office and...I don't know how.

McAdams was great in Mean Girls but did nothing in The Notebook, I can't remember which came first but they were around the same time.

This was Gosling's breakthrough, unfortunately, as we've been stuck with him ever since.

Adding everything up, pound for pound, The Notebook was a crime against cinema.

The Hurt locker felt like the A team does bomb disposal.

    But the Deer hunter...

Must say, I agree with most on his list, not in the sense of them being bad films but overrated by either general public or critical cognoscenti (in a few cases, both).

The Shawshank Redemption. Fine on first viewing, gets ickier with every subsequent reviewing. Usual trope of noble, upright prison lags v. dastardly establishment prison authorities.

Yes ... the Two Ronnies ...

Some very interesting discussions .... have yet to read a lot of them .... films are v subjective I feel and there are films I both love and hate in the discussion ... some in the same franchise ...

Kingsmen the Secret Service I agree is unnecessarily violent for such a comedic spoof thing .... this was not Casino Royale 2006 ... where the violent scene is justified and came direct from the pen of Ian Fleming himself .... but a latterday version of Casino Royale 1967 ... I remember one scene where everyone's heads start exploding with blood to the tune of Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March ... it was an offputting violent spoof a la Casino Royale 1967 with blood ...

That Kentucky wacko church scene ... what was that? ... a bit OTT too and failed at action or comedy ... too stereotypical as well ...

I got the feeling that just as was the case with Casino Royale 1967 .... what you had here was a film with little substance but a great cast of famous actors ....

I read that the 3rd Kingsman film is less OTT and more serious ... I may give that one a go ... but that the 2nd one is truly awful ... worse than the first ... I do not like comedic versions of some genres of film ... especially secret agent ones ... the dafter official Bond films are the limit to what I would tolerate ...

Some interesting ones here .... just a look at a few of them ...

Titanic and Top Gun were 2 of a kind ... I only watched both 2 times but found them long and boring ... one is about a romance and the other about training ... by the time the crash and Vietnam respectively come into play it is too little too late ... an older Titanic film and Full Metal Jacket do the type of film both try way better imv ...

I like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade ... but it is a bit light and jokey ... I am a big fan of Temple of Doom which along with Raiders is untouchable .... Crystal Skull is not as 'bad' as some say and is basically the very same story as Crusade ... will wait for the almost immediate DVD release for Dial of Destiny .... no wonder films do not do as well in cinema now ... they will be out on DVD before you know it ...

    Brokeback Mountain = awful ...

Mad Max is great but Mad Max 2 is perfect ... other sequels are good fun too but Mad Max 2 is the masterpiece for me ...

Citizen Kane is good at what it does ...

Avatar is simply too long ...

I love a good Terminator movie ... and I am a big fan of the first ... the second and third are great fun and all ... the others are mixed ... but T1 does something not possible after it ... Arnie as the bad guy and he is excellent as the true Terminator in this first movie ...

The Irishman - just too long and a pointless exercise in rehashing a load of Italian mafia shite that we've seen a million times before.

There's no accounting for taste. I don't know the nunber of times I thought a film was crap only to go online and find people fawning over it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 813 ✭✭✭Big Gerry

Just about every Christopher Nolan film is overrated except the Dark Knight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,102 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Has ever a film been so overhyped, overrated? from its original cinema release, through various DVD releases ?

bought it on DVD, got a takeaway, sat down watched it… “ ok this is a slow burner , no problem “….. “ errrr this isn’t really living up to the hype “…. ” Ok this is not a very good film “…. … sat through about 90 minutes of it….

Problem with Tarantino he overdoes the quirky often at the expense of a little more quality.

Mad Max 1 and 2 are fantastic. Not too crazy about 3. But the recent Fury Road remake with Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron I thought was terrible despite the great reviews.

Well, every film on my list I've seen more than once, with the exception of 'The Rock', which I just couldn't be bothered with after about 30 minutes or so. And a lot of the films on the list I actually like. Most of the I own on Blu ray. But I certainly think that they're overrated, at least by some. But, yeah, I'm in agreement with some of your comments above. 'Titanic', for me, only becomes interesting once the ship starts to sink. The rest is a turgid slog and it doesn't feel in any way authentic. I just don't buy Jack and Rose's "romance". But once the ship hits the iceberg, it becomes a horror film that's genuinely scary in some places. 'Top Gun', which I've seen twice, was always just baffling to me with regards to the respect it gets. It's bloody awful, with terrible characters. Especially the central character of "Maverick", who's never anything but an absolute arse. But that was the period that Cruise was at. Most of his characters at that time were just really awful people. Of course, you don't have to like a central character. In fact, you don't have to like any character in a film. But it helps if the story is entertaining, which 'Top Gun' isn't. The sequel was a big improvement, though, even if it has its own problems. As an aside, 'Top Gun' has nothing to do with the Vietnam war. It's set in the 80's.

Last Crusade...oh dear. Since I first saw it in 1989, it's always been a film that I've wanted to like more than I can and there's certainly a lot to like in there. Bu the comedy efforts just destroy it for me because they're not funny or even humorous. Those scenes are just stupid. But I did see a fanedit of it recently that cut all of that nonsense out and it elevated it immensely. But it's still the worst of the trilogy for me. The preceding pictures are just far, far, superior. And if I think that Last Crusade is overrated, Temple of Doom is very underrated.

'Citizen Kane' is a peculiar one and it's a film I've seen many times. But its story was never really that interesting. However the film becomes very interesting when you find out how it was made and the efforts that went into crafting it. The tricks in front of and behind the camera are fascinating and if you get the chance, it's well worth listening to Roger Ebert and Peter Bogdanovich's commentary tracks. The greatest film ever made? No. But that's an impossible title to put on any film as far as I'm concerned.

from what I have read, many many films I enjoyed, others find shite. The end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,824 ✭✭✭flasher0030

    Apocalypse Now.

Watched it long time ago when I was much younger. Didn't think anything of it. I watched it again a couple of years ago - an expended version (to see if there was anything more interesting added to it, and basically to see if a more mature me would appreciate it more). I found it really boring in most parts. Basically men on a boat heading down the river, with crazy looks on their faces.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,824 ✭✭✭flasher0030

Do you mean Tenet? There is a movie called Tenant, but I wouldn't put it up as being overrated - as I don't think it was really rated highly in the first place.

I enjoyed Tenet on the second viewing. I kinda got lost on the initial viewing .

    Cache by Professor Michael Haneke.

The very worst of arthouse cinema. Dry, intellectual, confusing, boring and nasty. As usual with this director, it feels like the viewer is being taught a lesson and worse, being condescended to.

I also lump in Gaspar Noe and Lars Von Trier with Haneke. Three Euro-trash, arthouse-horror, man-child directors who's attempts to shock come across as infantile and insincere.

    Sorry your right- tenet.

I’ve seen it twice myself and I wasn’t impressed either time.

I watched it a second time as people were raving about it at the start and I thought maybe I’d missed something- but nah I didn’t enjoy it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,932 ✭✭✭✭Tony EH

The original cut of 'Apocalypse Now' is the one to watch. The scenes that didn't work were already cut from the film in 1979 and putting them back in in 2001 wasn't going to change the fact that they didn't work in the first place.

'Apocalypse Now Redux" (Redux...jesus) is one of the best examples of an artist ruining his work because he can't leave it alone.

Inception, and yes 'I get it'. I got the storyline. They literally invented a character who asked 80 (no joke - 80) questions during the movie so that other characters could explain the plot to us (Ellen/Elliot Page). That is not a good script.

All of the Star Wars movies except the original first 2. They are so bad, I haven't even watched the last 2, despite having Disney+ and loads of excuses like covid lockdown.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,801 ✭✭✭speedboatchase

Any of the Disney stuff doesn't count for me. For good or bad, that was George Lucas' story.

Agree with Tony eh re The Shape of Water. Awful film. Dr Zhivago is one I feel is overrated. A lot of those epic type films are hard going.

Nope. George stole everything. And even then it was "saved in the edit" by his wife.

The Lavender Hill Mob does nothing for me.

Kind Hearts and Coronets or The Ladykillers are ridiculously better films.

    @Strumms

Problem with Tarantino he overdoes the quirky often at the expense of a little more quality.

I agree that Tarantino can get a little bit self-indulgent at times, alright. My favourite film of his at this stage would be Death Proof, and I think the reason why I like it so much is because there is not an ounce of 'fat' on it. By 'fat' I mean stylised excess. It does have some long dialogue scenes, but that's probably half of what you're coming for if you're watching a film of his, and they precede the action scenes very well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,165 ✭✭✭hayrabit

Idiocracy - a few funny parts, but overall: shít

and that's even allowing for the suspension of disbelief... eg the hospital and the president's abode looked fairly structurally sound to me - must've been a few clever baxtards among the 'idiots' , as i presume it's several generations removed from now; and how tf is the level of infrastructure as good as it is in a world populated by halfwits 😆

unfunny film overall and makes no sense.

Its all subjective. I agree with some people's choices and disagree on others. I think thats why cinema can potentially be so great, what one person loves, another hates.
