I had to double check what forum this was in for a while given some of the replies. I was brought up being told statues are for looking at, not for touching. Same with respecting other people's/public property. Just because it's tradition to lock padlocks to bridges doesn't mean you should.

People have been touching statues for as long as there have been statues. Religious statutes have been touched and kissed for centuries in anticipation of graces and good fortune. Many artists maintain their work is to be touched and enjoyed, not sequestered from the public. It's public property, why would you be debarred from touching public property in an open public place? It's a statue conceived, designed and commissioned to add to the tourist appeal of the area.

I think the breast fondling is a result of the over exuberant modelling of Molly's bits when the statue was made.. when was it? 1988.. Its hardly a tradition really is it?

I remember when it was first placed at the end of Grafton Street /College Green and there was a public discussion had about the size and prominence of them and whether Molly would really have had them uncovered like that!

My own opinion is that Molly would have worn a shawl wrapped crossways covering her top half unless she was selling more than cockles and mussels, but they have certainly captured the imagination and maybe a bit more.. And where is the harm in it?
