Pity there's no fastest losers, O'Sullivan unlucky with her heat.

Surely there are fastest losers? I always thought there was

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56,999 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Are there 3 semis for 1500?

  • Site Banned Posts: 12,341 ✭✭✭✭Faugheen

Yeah but I can see why they’ve moved to this approach. Ciara’s heat would have had a massive advantage knowing how fast they had to go to guarantee qualification.

Has its pros and cons but I think on balance it’s the fairest system. Gives us better races in the heats too.

Very good first morning for Ireland.

    Mixed 4x400m final.

Kate O’Connor is currently eight in the multi-events, with a solid 1.80 high jump.

All three 1500m runners were terrific. Sophie O’Sullivan was unlucky. I’m thrilled for Sarah Healy. I love the new found aggression, coupled with composure. Ciara got the job done.

Fingers crossed for the 1500m boys this evening. Top six for mixed relay would be amazing.

No. 2 x 12, with the first six in each to make the final.

How do they sort out who's in each heat? Is there seeding?

    An entertaining morning of athletics.

I thought Ciara looked very comfortable in her heat, she definitely has a shot of a medal. Glad to see Healy get through, she ran a smart composed race. Hopefully she can build on this form. Courageous run by Sophie she worked really hard to regain contact and just ran out of steam in the final 50. Still a big PB and Olympic QT, so a good days work.

Mawdsley ran a fantastic final leg in the mixed 4*400. She was left with a lot of work to do but she got the job done. There are 9 in the final as the Poles got through on appeal as they were impeded by the German runner who fell at the final changeover. I wonder will the Dutch beat the US both Klaver and Bol looked very easy.

Kate O’Connor is having a very good day so far. Two events aib and she is 8th overall.

I mainly watched the world feed on Virgin 2. Hannah England was the main lead. Jake Wightman joined for the 1500 and Dan O’Brien for the heptathlon. No studio coverage but plenty of athletics coverage.

Sophie knocked 5 seconds off her P.B, fair going after a long season for her.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 20,366 Mod ✭✭✭✭RacoonQueen

Sophie almost looks uncomfortable with her height. Fantastic performance from her though, really gave it a go in that last lap and emptied the tank. Massive PB and an Olympic qualifier at least a lot for her to take from today, any other heat today and she’d have been through with that time.

What time UK is 10,000 final now ?

    Was scheduled for 19-55

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 20,366 Mod ✭✭✭✭RacoonQueen

I think evening session is going ahead at originally scheduled times

  • That German fella on the third leg was a disgrace, he nearly took Bol out. I cant see the mixed relay team getting a gold unless Bol knocks it out of the park, the guy on the third leg is their weak link.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,864 ✭✭✭✭average_runner

They will change the third guy and both girls basically jogged it

  • Well the USA do love a bit of drama dont they.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out. Mu has been running 1500m and Hodgkinson has been running 400m in between their 800m training.

Mu has hardly raced 800m this year but then Moraa could be in the mix as well.

It will be a great race.

I think its the opposite to be honest, dislikes the spotlight that comes with the major championships.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 193 ✭✭SuspectZero

Its going to be tough for her, she drew the stinker of the semi-finals. She's in with Hassan, Kipyegon, Welteji, Muir and Hull.

Got to wonder what their sponsors make of them skipping major championships. Presumably their contracts have performance related bonuses?

Some finish to the woman's 10,000m Hassan falls just before the line...yikes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,502 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Dramatic finish to the 10,000m - Hassan fell a few metres from home whilst neck and neck with the Ethiopan for the gold medal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,715 ✭✭✭Speak Now

Unreal 2 consecutive track races The Netherlands hit the deck when trying to hang on for gold. No medal in either!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,603 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

Jesus, the dutch fell again, 5m from the line when leading! US overtake for a WR.

Mawdesly finished strongly for Ireland in 6th

  • Registered Users Posts: 952 ✭✭✭Jakey Rolling

Almost like the Dutch are wearing the wrong spikes! Thought Hassan had caught Tsegay's knee at first, but see in the replay that the cut on her leg was there before they clashed elbows.

I'll be watching BBC or Virgin tomorrow if this one on Eurosport is back on. Squealing at the end of the 10k and then laughing as Hassan fell and same in the 4*400 (though nowhere near as bad as the 10k one). She's been laughing constantly during the day too but ruined the end of that 10k

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,198 ✭✭✭✭Pherekydes

Unbelievable evening. Sensational drama in those two finals. Feel sorry for Bol. Fantastic leg by Mawdsley, 50.02. O'Connor is ahead of her NR schedule in the Heptathlon. The 1500m women did great earlier. A good start to the week.

Femke Bol a bit shell shocked when interviewed on BBC, no mention of a trip anyhow. Fantastic run by Sharlene M for us again, 6th place in final in a great result.

  • Registered Users Posts: 884 ✭✭✭Caprica

What an end to the evening. Two falls for the Dutch in the home straight. Bol was under pressure from the US not sure she would have held on. Great leg by Mawdsley, she has performed very well for the team. Should Tsegay not be DQ’d in the 10k? Did she not run through Hassan? An exciting race it built nicely, if not the fast times we usually see.

It’ll be interesting to see if Coscoran makes the 1500 final, could be tough. McCann ran well but the legs went in the last 50.

I found the lady on Eurosport annoying so switched over. The BBC studio experts talk a lot of rubbish. The Irish lady trackside is decent, Sarah Mulhern (I think)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,022 ✭✭✭✭titan18

Ya, I usually go Eurosport as the BBC studio heads annoy me and you miss out on live action cos of them. Eurosport were so poor tonight though that I'll have to change that if she's back on (Perri Shakes Drayton I believe)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,681 ✭✭✭Hamachi

Yeah. That is the semi final of death. Nikki Hiltz, the US champion is also in there. Sarah just needs to treat it like a final and give it her best shot. Ciara Mageean has the more manageable semi for sure. I feel like she has a great chance to progress.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,502 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

I'm pretty sure Bol fell because Holmes was coming at her - it caused her to tense up or tighten up and lose concentration. If she'd been five or ten metres clear, she probably wouldn't have hit the deck.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,706 ✭✭✭rovers_runner

If you watch the race back you can see how much Bol was coasting with 150m to go, she must have though it was in the bag and tried to keep it in the tank for the individuals. Any extra push here would of had her well clear.

She got some shock when she noticed the American girl on her shoulder.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 16,161 Mod ✭✭✭✭adrian522

I thought Bol thought she had it won and then when Holmes comes at her she tries to lean for the line but it was still too far away and hits the deck.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,443 ✭✭✭Lazare

It seems she started dipping for the line far too early. Hard to see what caused Hassan to go down. Loved her reaction afterwards though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,502 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Yes, Bol actually looked super relaxed 60m out but Holmes coming at her caused all the problems. There's a lesson there - never ease down or be too relaxed in a sprint final.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,443 ✭✭✭Lazare

Definitely. Thought that exact thing. At first it looked so cool how super relaxed she was but in hindsight there was a bit of complacency.

  • Yeah I agree with you about Tsegay, i thought it should have been a DQ but if it seemed like an accident then these things happen.

Poor Bol, my heart goes out to her. Everyone must've thought she'd have it in the bag.

  • I think Mu is racing.

But both of those athletes make a ton of money outside of running races so they have no worries.

  • Just watched a brief interview with Bol where she described what happened. This is what she said: "I was feeling pretty great, but I am not sure, the last meters I want to go and of course you get lactic (acid) as we all do, I just could not hit my strides like I normally do and I think I cramped up when I felt someone next to me then I was on the ground"

  • Hassan is such a cool customer, shes gas. She just takes everything in her stride, pardon the pun.

She's another one who could do with changing her technique, her elbows are always swinging arseways.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,558 ✭✭✭✭Murph_D

Hassan claimed she was pushed. Can’t see it, she planted her elbow in Tsegay’s chest twice before she went down. What a last lap all the same.

Hassan certainly wasn't pushed, she drifted right after her look over the wrong shoulder. She almost impeded Tsegay if anything.

I thought Bol had done a great job getting back up for bronze until I saw the baton already over the finish line 🫣

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,550 Mod ✭✭✭✭yerwanthere123

Wow, what a shocking end to day 1. Hassan and Bol are both two of my favourites so I'm heartbroken for them.

Hassan, however, clearly tried impeding Tsegay when she was closing. She twice drifted out into lane 2 to try and force Tsegay wide, Tsegay didn't have a choice but to keep going. And if you watch the replay again, Tsegay was beginning to make one final push before Hassan went down so I think she was going to win it anyway.

I think Bol thought she had it won in the back straight, she looked a bit too easy. I think she got the shock of her life when she saw someone on her shoulder and panicked. A shame to miss out on a WR as well as a gold, but I hope she storms back in the hurdles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,502 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Watching a new head on slow mo of the fall, Bol clearly became unbalanced and wasn't dipping for the line - her body was already starting to fall forward, even before her head and shoulders dipped. I think she just tensed up when she realised Holmes was on her shoulder and it all went pear shaped from there.

Post edited by Boards.ie: Mike on

  • I dont think she intentionally planted her elbow, she just has terrible upper body form always.

I think she lost her way slightly when she decided to look back, she should've been focusing on Tsegay. Maybe she already thought she lost the gold and was looking back to see how close Giday was to her.

I've seen Hassan do stuff like this before, in fact I'm surprised she won London with all her flaffing about stretching and going off course to get drinks etc.

She can be kind of clumbsy and awkward too but shes very likeable and this wont knock her confidence.

Poor aul Bol on the otherhand could be affected by her fall, hopefully not.

Another great run for Sharlene, just missed out with 4th in her heat with a P.B.

6 heats and 6 fastest non automatic qualifiers to go so fingers 🤞
