Rory and Jon first two names confirmed for European team. Not like they wouldn’t make it. Scottie and Clark in on USA team

Francesco Molinari has been named as Europe's fifth and final vice-captain as they try to win back the Ryder Cup from the United States in Rome.

Harman, cantley, Homa and schauffele qualify for team.

    Will zach pick liv players?

Not like the European liv players are wound be in a position like brooks to earn a pick

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,656 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Brooks will get a pick for sure. Social media is hilarious though with everyone wondering why Brooks wasn't in the list this morning/last night. A most basic amount of comprehension would make it easily understandable.

I see Aberg is playing in Czech Masters, must've been told something.

Europe team is shaping up nicely...Rahm, Rory, Hovland, Tommy, Hatton, Fitzpatrick...all will be in....probably mcintyre, straka, lowry aswell...I think Rose might sneak in aswell...then it gets interesting, may Meronk, he's close on both lists...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,656 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

I think European team is looking quite strong alright, first names anyway. Dunno if Lowry will get a pick though, definitely not on form anyway so hopefully having sone experience may count in his favour.

If Shane doesn’t play well this week he can’t be picked. Top 10 and not coming from 30th after Saturday. Needs to be in the mix after Friday.

Anyone who doesn’t get picked has no complaints as should’ve qualified

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,862 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

How is Robert McIntyre consided a certain pick, he bottled a tournament in Denmark, played well in Scotland, but other than that, didn't do much. Dodgy putter as well, is it the sky factor?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,656 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

3rd in European points so based on the criteria of qualifying, he can't be doing too badly. He isn't guaranteed yet either, but imagine he'll get a pick this time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 449 ✭✭CONSI

McIntyre got a lot of points for the 2nd place in scotland as it was one of these elevated events. Yanick Paul is still in the running on the european list aswell, his OWGR is 110 but he's 4th in the list...thats why i think Lowry will get in...some ryder cup experience...good guy to have around the team room I would imagine and just slipped out of the top 30 in the world but been top 30/top 20 for the last few years...

Lowry has passion too and showed it last time, his point total was not a true reflection as to how he played in those matches

I'd imagine Lowry will play irish open and BMW championship in the next few weeks, so if he shows some form there he will be in...its after the BMW that the team is announced I think...will the american team be already announced, after the fedex this weekend?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,939 ✭✭✭Russman

Agree with the point above that anyone not getting picked can't complain, although 6 picks maybe gives some room for complaining !

I think Lowry needs to show something in the next few weeks, at the moment he wouldn't be next nor near the team IMO, he simply isn't putting well enough. Very hard in a way for Luke Donald with so many picks I think, it almost puts more of it on him than the players. Though in fairness, nobody is putting up their hand to be noticed so he can't really go too far wrong.

FWIW, I think it'll be Rory, Rahm, Hovland, Hatton, Fleetwood, Matt Fitz, MacIntyre, Paul, Meronk, Straka, Lowry and Rose.

Hope this comes back to bite me, but I still think we're still in transition from the old reliables to the new crop and will be for another cycle. We could take a bit of a tonking in Rome. I think the fact that some people were briefly mentioning Harrington as a possible shows how bare the cupboard is IMO. Can Rory, Rahm, Hovland and maybe Rose, carry the other half of the team like Seve, Langer, Faldo etc in the 80s/90s ?

I think Lowry will make the team, based on the fact that he's a leading European on the PGA Tour and we don't have that many other top-class options. He's a big-game player so I'd back him to bring some decent form to the Ryder Cup, and he did well last time in difficult circumstances.

Team is announced week before the Irish open so the Irish open and the BMW PGA are irrelevant.

Only players in form should be picked imo. Lowry not in form unless that changes this week. Not so sure about McIntyre either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,987 ✭✭✭Trampas

Macintyre was 2nd in Scotland and only lost with Rory great finish.

We all need to take off the green glasses off when it comes to Shane. One top 10 since bmw win.

I think Donald is in tricky spot on picks. As said nobody really saying I deserve a pick

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 449 ✭✭CONSI

unfortunately outside of the top 6 europe isnt deep with talent. Yes only 1 top 10, but T12 in PGA championship, T16 Masters, T20 US Open, T14 Genesis invitational, T19 Travellers....I think he's good enough to make the team

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,785 ✭✭✭gypsy79

Lowry's passion....will you lads cop the fook on

    Should be based on form

Hopefully Lucas Aberg can play himself in. His form since going pro streets ahead of likes of Lowry. Been throwing in one bad round a weekend that has him as questionable

Bob MacIntyre might be worst player to play Ryder Cup. Missed a cut in Galgorm and is good 2 or 3 times a year max

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 801 ✭✭✭SeeMoreBut

Lowry's passion was throwing fist pumps etc when the team where getting hammered. His matchplay record isn't great

Will depend if Luke wants to bring new lads in. We need players who get birdies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,116 ✭✭✭ElisaAtWar

It's nothing about Shane's putting. He ha been unable to hit a ball close enough from inside 150yards. There is a clear pattern of just about making the putting surface and nothing else. Shouldn't be even considered.

Nice start from Rob Mcintyre looking to cement his spot.

What about either or both of the Hojgaard's as real outside shouts

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,656 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Rasmus might get a pick but would be doubtful on that, both seem too far down the list to make an impact though. Obviously a win changes that though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,987 ✭✭✭Trampas

Paul, meronk and macintyre all did well today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,310 ✭✭✭✭Mantis Toboggan

Ah jaysus earlier put a few pound on Europe to win before I heard the rory back injury news typical.

Luckily was able to cash out.

As per RTE, "Ryder Cup hopefuls Robert MacIntyre and Alexander Bjork seized their chance to personally impress Europe captain Luke Donald"

Has anyone ever heard Bjork being mentioned as a potential Ryder cup player? I certainly haven't. He's 20th on the European points list and 23rd on the World list. Bizarre.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,656 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Aberg out of the blocks fast today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 405 ✭✭Innish_Rebel

I really think he will be a pick. Looks a great player & has potential to be a big Ryder cup player for Europe for a long time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,656 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Yeah he's obviously playing after being told he's at least in consideration for the team, so would imagine 2 good weeks will lock in a pick, maybe only 1.

If Shane misses cut he shouldn’t be considered for it. A birdie feast and not getting them isn’t what you want for match play

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 449 ✭✭CONSI

He'll need something on his last hole of the day to be even in with a shout of playing the weekend...which is disappointing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,987 ✭✭✭Trampas

Needs to get up and down from bunker

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,987 ✭✭✭Trampas

Misses cut and I believe his Ryder cup spot

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,029 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

I can still see Lowry getting picked for his experience on the big stage, with the argument being that the likes of Aberg, Meronk and Paul have barely played in any majors or big events so the occasion might be too much for them. Not saying I agree but I can see that narrative being spun.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,987 ✭✭✭Trampas

He can be a vice captain then. Rahm, Rory and co can be there for experience

I'd have Lowry in the team.

    My team would be:

    McIlroy

    Rahm

    Hovland

    Hatton

    Fleetwood

    Fitzpatrick

    Rose

    Mcintyre

    Meronk

    Straka

    Lowry

    Aberg

Why would you have him in the team. If he wasn’t Irish would you say the same?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,310 ✭✭✭✭Mantis Toboggan

    I would, reasons:

still top 40 player in the world

    Major winner

Fishished top 20 in 3 of the 4 majors this year

Has played ryder cup previously and performed well.

Lack of depth to the European team.

Major was 4 years ago. Record books will say 1/3 in last Ryder cup and well beaten in singles. He won on the Saturday and through fist pumps and roars and said it was his best week of his career which I think was mad thing to say. Winning Irish and British open should be but each to their own.

He’s playing bad at the moment. Players should be picked on form and not what they managed to do years ago. The names who are in the conversation and performing this week and next should be picked as pressure is on them also. Unlike Shane they’re in the mix.

I think Donald would like to pick Shane but Shane has put Donald in a situation where he can’t pick him as what message does it send. Player playing badly and still gets picked. Shane might look for a spot on timesheet next week but means he’ll be playing 4 weeks in a row

    I’d go at the moment

McIlroy, Rahm, Hovland, Hatton, Fleetwood, Mcintyre. As these are in as stand

    Picks

Fitzpatrick, Meronk as won on course so horse for courses Straka as per pga season. They are in

    After that and I’d go

    Paul, Rose, Bjork

Bjork stats are very impressive this year. Last 3 I’d be open to change my mind as things go this and next week.

Problem with world rankings now it’s heavily weighted on pga tour players. Shane just isn’t playing well enough and a few times this year he’s dropped back when he was up there and picked up a few shots late but pressure was off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,310 ✭✭✭✭Mantis Toboggan

Can't see Donald taking taking those two rookies over Lowry, especially rookies without a win all year and both not even qualifying for all the majors this year.

Some permutations on what it would take to deny MacIntyre a spot on the team

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,987 ✭✭✭Trampas

He’s in the team no matter what happens. For the likes of Shane I think he prefer he gets in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,987 ✭✭✭Trampas

Shane has broken more shafts than top 10’s this year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 547 ✭✭✭Neewollah

I think Lowry will get a pick as the depth is not there at the moment. Really have concerns over McIntyre. Don't think he's near the level required and benefited from the power of the points available at the Scottish open. Rest of his results in fairly bang average fields have been poor all year for a lad you need to win ryder cup points. Doesn't help that Sky absolutely blow him up like he's the next big thing. He's going to be on the plane though but I'd rather see Meronk get in automatically.

My picks would be: Lowry, Fitz or Fleet (Whichever doesn't make it on world list), Straka, Rose, Rasmus Hojgard, Meronk

Aberg being a potential left field pick. Would actually rather him to likes of Hojberg, Meronk and McIntyre

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 449 ✭✭CONSI

There is always a give political side to the european team. Donal needs to pick some players from DP tour so I think McIntyre, Meronk and Hojgaard hit that brief...as has been said, we just dont have the strength on european tour...Rahm's form is a worry aswell...so I think Lowry will get in...Hovland and rory and rahm will have to play all sessions
