Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I was the one who said that those users are fine on it. I never said that the surface would be perfect 24/7/365 and to expect this (as I also mentioned) when there there is both a finite budget and limited numbers of tradesmen available to complete the changes is a bit naive.

The surface around Kilcock is excellent *when compared* to that from Confey to Castleknock. There are much greater priorities which have not yet been touched. It is these surfaces that are unsuitable to many 24/7/365.

Having hiking and cycled the full length of the Royal canal more than once it is my opinion that turning the path into a “ roadway without cars “ is total overkill. The newly built section between Louisa and Confey is exactly that, a tarmac road with lights which has been robbed of all its character . The section west of Maynooth as far as the Shannon is perfect for the vast majority of users and if that standard was continued right into the city it would be a job well done.

I think the money would be put to better use by spending say five million to upgrade five kilometres to a good standard rather than spending five million to turn one kilometre into a motorway without cars .

I'd much prefer a hard-surface too and I'd say most people would agree tbh. It's nice to be able to just throw on a pair of runners and go for a walk. It's a pain having to stick the hiking boots on and everything else that goes along with it, especially in/after the rain. The path then is essentially only useable by a very small amount of people.

Any update on the works and accessibility?

too right, who does the contractor thing they are trying to hold a public amenity as a ransom.

From the looks of things, the contractor is finished on site - all equipment is gone, and the fenced-off area they were using for base camp is gone too. I'll be interested to see how long it takes them to become aware of the hole and repair it. Whoever took it down will quickly win that battle I think.

It looks finished, even the lights have been installed now. Why can't they just remove the fences? This has been a complete joke so far.

Any update? Is there even partial access again?

Big unofficial gap in the fences either end still. Dispute still ongoing with no details given by either side still.

Presumably the recent storm is responsible, but the Louisa Bridge end fence has collapsed.

I got out at Lousia Bridge yesterday. Seems like the section west towards Maynooth is as before. I cycled back to the city. The section to Leixslip Confey is complete and accessible. Very nice too. Needs some planting to finish off though at the pathway side adjacent to fields. Lighting and seating and lock stations along the way. Abrupt stop at Confey Bridge with no throughpoint i.e. under the bridge. No further works evident beyond that all the way to the Deep Sinking where the nimbys live. At this rate it will be years before there is a Maynooth to Docklands clear run.

There's two picnic tables and two benches added to the Louisa Bridge end now, and one single solitary bench at around the halfway point. Also a bike repair station at the LB end, which is a great facility. I didn't look too closely, but I assume, pump, allen keys, spanners, etc. All chained to a big metal post.

I walked along the canal this morning. One think I noticed absent were bins. My dog took a dump shortly after joining the path at Confey and I had to carry it until we got to LB station. I know that a lot of people won't carry their rubbish that far unfortunately.

I was looking at the tools this morning. The allen keys aren't there (robbed?). This photo was taken by @devonp recently...

I didn't look too closely, so couldn't tell you if there were actually allen keys there on Sunday. It didn't look as tangled as that, ffs.

When I saw it this morning, it wasn't all tangled up.

What is it with some people who seem congenitally programmed to destroy stuff. 🤔

Do the lights on the 'new' section between Confey and Louisa Bridge stations work yet?

Noticed they weren't on at around 7pm, but it wasn't very dark yet - I was thinking they might turn on later in the evening.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,106 ✭✭✭buffalo

Well they weren't on at 7am this morning, and it was pitch black out then. From my experience with KCC and pedestrian lights, it can take a few month between infrastructure and ESB connection.

The council's track record isn't great in that regard!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,106 ✭✭✭buffalo

Liffey Champ has council meeting report that there is "no timescale" for ESB to connect up the lights.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,106 ✭✭✭buffalo

Seems like half the lights - the LB half - are now connected.

The Maynooth to Leixlip part has been under construction for a few weeks now. A sign claims the works will take approximately 22 weeks, that's from mid-June so the planned completion date is somewhere around mid-November. Not getting my hopes up for that date.

If it takes 30 weeks, I’ll survive.

Great to know it should be all finally done by the time the weather starts improving next spring.

I followed up recently with Fingal CC on the Royal Canal Urban Greenway and they said they've had to re-do their internal plans, this was the response:

"As the project is currently at pre-planning stage there is a requirement to ensure the project preliminary design complies with the new cycling manual which was recently published. Therefore, this has resulted in the need to revise the preliminary design drawing for the project. These changes in the preliminary design requires the need to hold additional meetings with all the relevant key stakeholders to agree the revised design. These meetings will continue over the coming monthly to ensure a coordinated, high quality final design which compiles with the new cycling manual is achieved at interfaces between existing facilities and the proposed scheme.

Following completion of the preliminary design, all the required documents including the Environmental Impact Assessment Report will be prepared for a planning application to An Bord Pleanála."

So probably be waiting a good while yet for any progress from Leixlip into the city.

Edit: the updated manual was published a year ago this month it seems…
