Yeah he got a job down here with a company he did placement with when in college. Adds depth to Backrow.

Conor Phillips making debut tonight too.

Ah it was a kids team put out by Trinity - we were alot better than them. Naturally a student side impacted by it still being summer, lads working or on J1 etc.

Think it was even blown up a little early.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,274 ✭✭✭Stainalert

How did Conor Phillips go ? Great signing

  • Registered Users Posts: 636 ✭✭✭Chico Flores

Got on for about 20 - as has had an injury. Scored a try.

Any idea of the Trinity line up or any names involved?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,242 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Trinity often do that. no surprise either and as you say people still away. Trinity not back for classes for nearly 3 weeks so that miight be a factor as well

  • Registered Users Posts: 9 youvebeenrumbled

Yea, some dubious enough scores. Up to 28points were potentially not scores. So in reality it was more like 33-14 to Terenure. Also our Ireland U20s wingforward wasn't playing so he would have made a huge difference. Big tour up next week.

  • Registered Users Posts: 636 ✭✭✭Chico Flores

Eh.... not too sure what was dubious and I could say Jordan Coughlan, Luke Clohessy, Alan Bennie, Peter Sylvester, Marcus Hannan, Levi Vaughan, Sean McNulty etc weren't playing ... but that's the nature of these pre season games

Also as can often go in bigger score games the ref can even a few things up.

Not trying to have a go. Was a callow Trinity side

Didn't Trinity ask for this game to be moved forward so they could go on tour ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 9 youvebeenrumbled

Yea, well it was the same ref as the AIL game in Lakelands last year. Coincidence? I don’t think so!

There was at least 4 scores that just weren’t tries. We should have scored to at end of 1st half. My point is had it not been for some decisions and other factors the score would have been a lot closer and was reflective of the game.

I heard at the sideline from multiple sources that Terenure were brining in Michael Bent as player/scrum coach. That would be a great signing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 636 ✭✭✭Chico Flores

  • Registered Users Posts: 636 ✭✭✭Chico Flores

I've no idea if ref was the same, can't even remember who reffed the AIL final, but that is more to do with the festivities afterwards and will take your word for it

But are suggesting the ref gamed this so we would win easily? You are going down a big rabbit hole there. It was a pre season game, where one side was a good deal stronger than the other.

At least 4 scores that weren't tries. We won by 47 points, maybe flattered us a little but bench was emptied early etc.

    But ok.

No idea on Michael Bent - news to me.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9 youvebeenrumbled

Oh terenure definitely better side, just the mistakes made the score line very flattering.

I just met an ex-UCD & YM player, said he had heard the Bent thing & to his knowledge was happening.

He’d still be a serious operator at that level.

This reference about the referee being in some way biased is hilarious nonsense. Referees makes mistake, and his decision to award that penalty at the end of last season's game was a poor call. But to imply a deliberate bias on an on going basis is tinfoil hat stuff.

I don't want to get into names. As I'm not sure if it's confirmed and he only said to his knowledge it was happening. But that's at least 4 people who I have heard Bent is coming to Terenure, wouldn't be surprised if Leinster want him on the books during the World Championships.

In fairness to the ref, he had a great game overall.

Hope the IRFU get involved here, no room for it in the game! Christian trimble should never wear a banbridge shirt again

fair yeah, wouldnt be the first time to hear of it tho..... malahide did it i think just before covid season or maybe it was the season after cant remember which but they had mike ross play coach for them in ail games. Don't think he stuck around long tho!

back to your other comment above though regarding the nure trin game not gonna read too much into the game tbh as 1. its very very early days but both sides probably missing players, college without some to various reasons, travelling j1 work etc etc and nure and chico flores pointed out were without some too jordan bennies sylvester etc etc to name a few but i do tend to question the draws for these comps....

i know its provincial and not all 1a 2a 2b 2c clubs are in leinster etc etc etc but like what benefit are the likes of skerries tullamore wanderers malahide gonna get out of a game v rock? cant predict a result that hasnt happened yet but say they field the players there suspected and talked about to bring in this year honestly what benefit is any ail div 2 10 or backrower gonna get out of facing an ian madigan or jordi murphy calibre type players when they're probably not gonna get than standard type when the ail starts.... seriously questionable! most them games should be seen as trying new combos players or plays etc etc work on in preseason but a mismatch like that i dont think does much for the lower league clubs...

Similar situation in Ulster where Harlequins can’t field v Instonians due to a lack of front rows.

Word is Gavin Jones, the Trinity centre who joined Clontarf has had to retire on medical grounds. Awful shame and hope he is ok, a really really good player

between losing him and courtney going to oz last season, they will be at a big loss in the centre. jones was a handy player though always unfortunate when a player receives news like that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 337 ✭✭luke9311

by the way.... anyone in here know if ronan quinn the trinity winger still playing with them for the season coming up or has he moved on? if so where to? hes a handy player if you give him the ball an open space

  • Registered Users Posts: 9 youvebeenrumbled

Quinny has gone to London for work. Big loss for us! Our attack was sharp vs Wesley. I hear James Nicholson who joined the Connacht Academy, has signed for Lansdowne. Huge signing if true! He was very good in the World Championships. My son is a youths player in Lansdowne, saw him down there at 1sts training.

yeah was thinking hes been with trin now for guts of 4-5 seasons so was thinking hes there or there abouts graduating from hes degree like so was thinking he must be on the move soon. hes one of them players i felt hes very good if u use him well i.e. get the ball out to him asap in acres of space and he craves it up... very similar to max mcfarland a number of years ago with tarf and trin. Thats an intresting move if it is true... cant say i heard anything myself of him other than the connacht move but somewhat surpised he didnt pick a club out west. players that go out that way usually end up playing with buccs or corinthians like mark boyle did when on connacht trial and stayed out there playing with them. Oisin dowling and senior players in connacht from with lansdowne links from what i remember im not sure if there till tied to them or not tbh...

Pretty sure Peter Sullivan stayed with Lansdowne while he was with Connacht. Guess there's only so much game time with Buccs and also players/Connacht academy coaches may believe playing at a higher level is worth the travel.

he did yeah, as did greg mcgrath... unsure about the rest tho

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,242 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Even in past with some connacht clubs in 1A/1B theyve kept some players playing AIL with dublin clubs if they joined Connacht from Dublin AIL clubs. Conor McKeon, with Lansdowne, and good few other academy players have for a season or two kept playing with clubs in other provinces. Makes sense when you look at it.

Interesting to see how Queens do this year, lost a lot of experience but brought in a lot of the Ulster academy and NTS players

  • Registered Users Posts: 138 ✭✭Purist98

I suppose only 1 Connacht club in the top three divisions means you can't send every academy player to Bucs as they won't all play

  • Registered Users Posts: 636 ✭✭✭Chico Flores

Yeah Im pretty sure that if you are in the Connacht Academy, you have to play for a Connacht Club - certainly over the past two/three seasons.

It is different for Peter Sullivan, or was, as a full pro can't play below Division 1 - but all academy lads can. He will have to join one of the Connacht sides, 100%

It is to do with the Pro Player rule- they got an exemption for Sam Illo when Buccs were in 2A, as we spoke to him and also for Shayne Bolton for Galwegians as he had played so few games. But pro player can only play in Div 1A/1B - so if a lad needs games from Connacht - say an Oisin Dowling - well he could go back to Tarf.

Mark Boyle was on a Development Contract - so could play in 2B

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,242 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

i know that but there has still occasionally been academy players over the years having played with clubs elsewhere

  • Registered Users Posts: 636 ✭✭✭Chico Flores

They have but when Eric Elwood took over I think he put a stop to it. Pretty sure they won't let it happen anymore - but wait and see what happens with James Nicholson albeit wasn't he with UCD last year, unless no longer in college, you'd assume he would stay with them?

  • Registered Users Posts: 138 ✭✭Purist98

Oliver Coffey has joined Blackrock in 1B, probably favourite to start 9 for the Irish 20s this season

  • Registered Users Posts: 3 upandunder23

Shannon trained against Munster last night in Thomond Park, wasn't advertised but seemed they allowed selected members attend - pity!

It sounds like it could be a tough season for the Parish side, they've not replaced Coffee or Sean McCarthy and both would have been keys players. Also my understanding is the majority of the management team left over the summer so all must not be well in Coonagh! They've still not announced the new management team which is odd considering how good their social media coverage usually is.

Cookies garryowen tomorrow night, great to have rugby back!!

yeah i wasnt 100% sure on the ins and outs of it myself.... i thought its once ur with a certain province u have to go to a club within there... could be different for senior contracted development vs academy players i guess or vice versa

  • Registered Users Posts: 9 youvebeenrumbled

So I’ve now heard James Nicholson won’t be with Lansdowne. Must be because of these regulations. It seems he’ll play for Corinthians. He was going to play for Galweigans but apparently was advised by some of his previous coaches not to. Didn’t get the full details, but it’s something to do with some past issue between them.

Pity he won’t be in 1A, was very good at the World Championships. I would have enjoyed seeing him in the league.

  • Registered Users Posts: 636 ✭✭✭Chico Flores

It makes sense for Connacht to be fair, if they take him in, train him and so on, they should want the Connacht clubs to get the benefit of it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,242 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

    ok game in Limerick tonight

    Cookies beat Garryowen 15-5

Few signings i noticed without having seen team sheets. Garryowen Calvin Langan scrum half signed from Wegians but hes from Monivea
