So for reasons I won’t get into, I have no tax on my car since march. I was tailed by a roads policing car today and I am sure they ran my reg as they went out of their way to follow me. I didn’t get pulled over though. My question is can a fine for no tax be issued without being actually being stopped?

Tailed by a road police car? Are you sure they just weren't going the same way and you were being paranoid because you've had no tax for the past 5 months.

I think they have to stop you and inform you why you're being fined and that you'll receive a letter in the post. You'll know yourself in a few weeks time anyway.

I'd imagine that if they were tailing you then having no tax would have been a perfect excuse to pull you over. Something like that would be a red flag to a traffic unit I'd imagine. They'd want to know why, and what else is wrong. I'd say they didn't know your tax was up

Who knows, wait and see. If you get the fine you can have no complaints driving around with tax out for 5 months.

Well they were ahead of me and pulled in for me to pass. Then followed me for 10 minutes. My car probably stands out a bit.

that’s what I presumed, they had to pull you over to issue the fine. Will have to wait and see.

They'll stop you and fine you. The gardai won't send you a fine without stopping you first. (same for speeding)

Traffic wardens can issue you with a fine for no tax even if you're not there

Keep an eye out, lots of unmarked cars out there, not the ones you’d expect either. Marked car was probably tailing you to get some info on you and see how you react under pressure.

When they come back to go in for the kill, they’ll be much more subtle.

If I were you, I wouldn’t leave the house for a while.

(Maybe lay off whatever weed made you so paranoid for a while too)

Haha if I was smoking weed, tax would be the least of my worries.

They should of lifted the car. That they didn't I doubt you'll get a fine.
