What are you basing this off? At the time the MAGA movement was totally convinced of its hold on the US military - and the police. So they were frankly shocked police resisted them and Ashli Babbit got shot.

Whether the military “would have gone along with it” is not material: had they killed Pence or some senators or Pelosi or some house members, or even simply delayed Congress getting back to order before January 7, then a Constitutional Crisis would have been triggered. This is simply a fact of our constitution, because of the electoral count. Ultimately what wouldn’t have happened in that circumstance is Joe Biden being inaugurated on January 20, no way no how. So the aims of the coup would have been perfectly met, without having to seize Fort Knox or Edwards AFB or the Pentagon. We would have been living through a second unconstitutional term of Donald Trump. At best we would have been living through a military interim government, and still a massive coup of American democracy in and of itself. What would they do, throw him in jail? Pence is dead, who’s the president? Pelosi is dead, who else? The Senators are dead, who confirms them into office?? Etc.

And he still would have had a facially plausible constitutional argument to make that the military should still obey him while the courts sorted out the complete mess he had made of the transition of power. So I can still see the military at large obeying the chain of command because we still have too many pans cooking over too many fires at any given time. Either rate a total destabilization of the United States. Exactly the kind of thing Russia might like. Best hope in that case would be the states declaring a Constitutional Convention — which has never been done before, and is the constitutional equivalent of ragnarok where the entire constitution is thrown open for editing writ large.
