Well to be fair Katie Taylor mentions God at the end of every fight and she certainly wouldn't be alone in Ireland with her strong faith, although it is probably getting rarer for people of her age.

Religion a much more private matter now in Ireland. We're basically like England now in terms of religion. America wears religion on it's sleeve and takes it seriously.

Discussing Religion and how it "guides them" is a central component for US Politicians , certainly Right-wing ones.

For many many reasons, if Irish Politicians talked about Religion the ways their American counterparts do they wouldn't last very long at all.

If I see anything about "God" or "Christian" or a Cross emoji in an American's twitter bio it's like 90% that the timeline is going to be full of aggressively hateful disinformation and targeting of minorities.

It's almost like certain Americans think that it gives them the moral authority to be sh*tty to others with impunity.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,298 ✭✭✭✭hotmail.com

But there is a hard core element, millions of them. And then there's a more "moderate" religious outfit in America that would come across as daft in Europe by this stage.

Biden and Obama, Clinton - these types. Never shut up about religion.

Much of the immigration into America was for religious reasons - from the Pilgrim Fathers on.

Some areas of USA are very much angled towards a particular religion - Utah for the Mormons; Philadelphia for Amish community. the bible belt for fundamental Christians, Boston and Chicago for the Irish, etc., etc. Some of these areas and religions have very strong hold on the electorate, so anyone looking for votes had better be careful.

However, if they really believed the tenets of those religions, they would not be shooting fellow Americans, or at least enabling other Americans to shoot their fellow Americans. They also excuse outright racism towards minorities.

Currently, they consider Biden too old, but Trump is only three years his junior, so at the next Presidential election, he will be older than Biden was in 2020.

Question, could Trump be fined for his various indictments significantly - such as to bankrupt him? And if he was bankrupt, would that disbar him from standing?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,076 ✭✭✭Brussels Sprout

The only president I remember banging on about religion was George W. Bush with his whole "God told me to invade Iraq spiel".

I would say that Biden is a believer but he doesn't bang on about it.

I'm convinced that Obama isn't religious at all and just played the game.

No idea about Clinton. He's from the south but he's also the ultimate politician so who knows what he really believes.

Trump, obviously, hasn't a religious bone in his body. Most likely he thinks that it's for suckers and the only true deity is himself.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,437 ✭✭✭BlueSkyDreams

Dont most people in the western world think its for suckers?

Not trying to validate Trump in any way.

He is making a play for the radical Left base among young Democrat activists.

Occam's razor applies to RFK, Jr: He's simply nuts.

But, I do like the bingo hits in your post.

Clearly he was turned by some tree-hugging middle class gay/trans Palestinian activist fuelled by avocado toast and disposable vapes.

Gee, Vivek Ramaswamy's a fraud. Who'd have thought! Not even registered Republican until recently, had his Wikipedia bio changed to remove the fact he took a Soros scholarship, claimed to be poor though both parents were wealthy professionals, indicted by the SEC for pump-and-dump schemes, basically a more modern version of the current GOP nomination frontrunner, who stole his money the old fashioned way, real estate and bankruptcies:

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,076 ✭✭✭Brussels Sprout

The Soros scholarship is the real chef's kiss there.

Then again, Donald Trump had a history of fraud and grifting a mile long and his supporters didn't care so long as he said awful things about the people that they hated. Ramaswamy clearly saw that and learned from it. If you have no morals (and clearly he does not) then it's relatively easy to game the Republican electorate.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,445 ✭✭✭✭Igotadose

Bolton on CNN chimed in with a takedown on how Vivek is just like TFG : clueless, in far over his head and absolutely certain of himself.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,292 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Ramaswamy's surge is gonna crater the moment it hits the key demographic of white (conservative) Christian America. Ain't no way someone with his background and ethnicity is gonna win the nod from many within the US Taliban. At best we might eventually see a black pastor or evangelist but not a Hindu (though IIRC Ramaswamy has tried to twist his religious background as Christian adjacent - which kinda says even he knows the barrier exists)

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,076 ✭✭✭Brussels Sprout

That last point is really valid. He's got the classic "tech-bro" over confidence where he seems to believe that he can solve complex problems that have eluded experts in those areas just by focusing on them himself and coming up with a solution. The classic example of this was him being quizzed on Foreign Relations on a podcast. He basically said that Russia should be allowed do what they want with Ukraine and that the Chinese should be able to take Taiwan in 2027. He then followed that up by openly admitting that he knew nothing at all about those topics just 6 months ago!!!

The fact that sociopathic charlatans like him keep rising to the top in the USA is a real indictment of their society.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,076 ✭✭✭Brussels Sprout

Not sure this is the best idea by the Republicans but the MAGA wing of the party can pull the plug on McCarthy whenever they see fit so he's basically a slave to their worst impulses now:

Something like 19 Republicans in The House represent districts that Biden won in 2020 so there's no guarantee they'll even get this through a House vote when it comes to that. I haven't even bothered to check what their official reasoning is for this but it doesn't really matter does it. This is just pure spite on Trump's behalf.

Very little to report from the 2nd GOP debate. The format was a mess, moderators lost control and simply to many people on stage.

Pence continues to run a wretched campaign, he was actually a solid debater v Harris/Kaine but he has been absolutely lifeless in the 1st 2 debates. You would expect a man who could have been strung up by his ex boss supporters a few years ago would be a little more spikey but nope. He is someone who if serious about stopping Trump should drop out and endorse someone and set an example for the rest of the field.

Christie only seems interested in going after Trump and to a lesser extent Vivek which is understandable as Vivek is clearly a proxy for Trump. I have read online he has been pally with Ron during breaks in both debates. To be fair he knows a viral clip of him tearing apart Haley or RDS only benefits Trump anyhow.

Contrary to what some say RDS has gone after Trump for a while now and seems to be stepping it up. Its likely to lead to failure but heh may as well run a strategy which is not "hope a black swan moment takes Trump out" which is what the rest seem to be doing. However no matter the strategy he picks , he has no razz whatsoever, in a perfect world it should not matter, but its 2023 and a GOP primary so yeah whoops.

Tim Scott is spending a lot of donor money but going absolutely nowhere.

Haley seemed keen to pick fights with everyone bar Trump , as others have said feels like the Harris of this campaign, donors love her but not sure their is support on the ground for her.

Doug Burgam seems to be running for bucket list reasons, but tbf is more interesting than I suspected initially but yeah should not be on stage.

At the very least at least two of the also rans need to be eliminated for the next debate in November.

They don't have an official reasoning, the enquiry is to desperately try and find the pretence of one.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,072 ✭✭✭✭Rjd2

Despite their great wealth GOP donor's remain idiots. Youngkin if he was to enter would further crowd the field making a Trump win even more likely ffs. He also is nowhere near as middle of the road that some GOP donors may think, he got involved big time in the culture wars to get elected.

The donors should realise the only way to beat Trump in a primary bar praying to God is to get behind RDS or to a lesser extent Haley and force the others to drop out.

Although obviously as Vivek is Trump's useful idiot he is going nowhere until Trump tells him to which makes it all the more complicated.

The combination of Biden's age and his shocking VP pick is going to be a real headwind for him in this election, not so much his present age but he'll be 86 come the end of the 2nd term and having confidence of him being able to do the job at 86 is a big ask.

It's quite interesting seeing how prominent Newsom is at the minute, in the context of the above.

This is a point I can't detach from, since the GOP candidates were announced. Almost every president of the U.S has been a protestant of one form or another, with JFK being the first Catholic president, and Biden the only exception since. A muslim, hindu or jew will most likely not get the GOP nomination in my lifetime. It will even be a long time before a woman gets it. Too large a bloc of the Republican vote sadly believe that a Protestant white male as the only option, due to misogyny and a white superiority complex. The dems were the first party with a black president, first non-protestant president and they will be the party of the first female, first lgbtqia+ and first jewish member to hold the highest rank in government. Ramaswamy, Scott, Haley, Elder, Hurd and Suarez would have had a better chance if they switched parties and ran.

Former Vice President Mike Pence has suspended his campaign for president amid lagging poll numbers and financial challenges.

He announced the suspension while speaking at the Republican Jewish Coalition’s annual conference in Las Vegas on Saturday.

    From CNN.

State of the GOP primary with Iowa first state about a month away.

Trump is surging , RDS is barely holding on while Haley still has the issue of the base not liking her that much whatsoever.

The amusing thing about Haley is her bedrock of support is clearly the NeverTrump wing of the party even though in her campaign she has spent a fortune on attacking RDS compared to Trump (pennies ) whose permission she requested to enter the race.

RDS has taken the gloves of the last few months tbf and has tried to run to the right of Trump and focus on policy but when a sizable majority of the party are so devoted to their leader that was never going to work.

Ultimately RDS and Haley are having a fight over 35% of the pie while Trump watches on with a big grin on his face.🙃

It occurred to me that Al Gore, who was at COP28, would be a possible Plan 'B' for the Democrats.

He is younger than Trump. He is 75 to Trump's 77.

He still has his marbles, and comes across as a decent, honest, and respected politician. Trump fails on all points.

He nearly won (or actually did win) in 2000 following the intervention of SCOTUS. Florida was the single state that flipped the result either way, and was down to a relatively small number of votes.

He is the winner of a Nobel Prize - for his work on climate change. How appropriate is that currently.

Surely he could not lose to Trump.

Fair to say the issue is appealing to Democrats and swing voters. Trump's base is solid, there's no inroads to be made there. Gore is another geriatric, the Democrats ought to embrace their Progressive wing and build around a platform that has broad cross cultural appeal.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 19,631 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sam Russell

I would see it as advantage for the Democrats keeping Joe Biden as the obvious candidate for as long as possible if they intend that he drops out.

He is seen by many in the whole electorate as being 'too old'. However he is not much older than Trump - 80 vs 77. Trump appears to be losing it, and could be helped to act in a way that would remove all doubt that he is past it.

I would think that just prior to the Democratic Part Congress would be a good time for announcing Gore's candidancy.

Apart from the fact that it would be after all the Primaries that is.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,072 ✭✭✭✭Rjd2

The donors would prefer Trump than a genuine progressive though unfortunately . Its easy to forget that they are ultimately a Centre right party.

I have never believed that Biden will be replaced because electorally their is no obvious slam dunk when it comes to the EC that would not create a serious shitshow when it comes to replacing Biden.

Their best bet is to hope the court cases will kill Trump when it comes to his campaign finances and with the "independent" voters IMO.

What happens if Biden declares ill health would prevent him able to complete a full term, but not to complete his current term? The Congress would then have to replace him - but have no elected individual to replace him.

Surely Gore would be a possible choice - if he would accept it.
