Get Sexton a hit-out with the first-teamers and assess things.

If we're seriously rusty, go full-bore again against Tonga.

But if we look sharp, start seconds against Tonga with a stacked bench in case of emergency.

If Ireland go full-strength I would expect about 6 tries in the first half, and about 6 substitutions at half-time.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,529 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

I think we're going to go close to full strength all the way and count on our replacements being up to it if we get injuries or suspensions. We won't be risking losing any games.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,824 ✭✭✭Jump_In_Jack

In that case, if anyone has a niggle they would likely be dropped for the next match?

Just seems risky coming into the SA or Scotland matches.

If planning to have lads performing well late into the tournament, the first choice lads have to go out against Romania. If they played Tonga, they would have to play SA the following week, Scotland two weeks later and then every week after that. It would be 6 games in 7 weeks, there is no chance of maintaining the intensity required given the quality of the teams we'd be playing.

I'd assume that they maintained a heavy training load later than they normally would coming up to a game. Realistically we don't have to do a huge amount of specific preparation for Romania. Between training hard and the temperatures this weekend, it'll still be a good workout even if we destroy the Romanians.

The firsts then get recovery while the second string prep for Tonga. The firsts can then start building towards SA without the distraction of Tonga. They'll have to go all out against SA but should be fresh going into it and they have recovery time after before attention turns to Scotland.

Only a weeks turn around to the quarters but the lads will be battlehardened by then but hopefully plenty left in the tank. France/NZ will have had a few nothing games before then, that may be an advantage or a disadvantage. We'll have to go full steam for three weeks on the trot through the knock out stage. Injuries will play a huge part in it but we have cover in most positions.

I know Farrell has said that the Samoa game was set with the Tonga game in mind, but I wonder if the team for Tonga will be very similar to the team that played Samoa?

Which suggests to me that the Samoa game was a 'can we go second string and win' and I'm not sure the squad quite answered that.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,458 ✭✭✭kuang1

Well yeah they did... They won. In bad conditions with a lot of "easy fix" mistakes. So if we lengthen your question ever so slightly to "can we go second string and win against Tonga" then I think that was answered. (Not emphatically mind.)

We know Samoa bring more to the table than Tonga do at the moment. So I reckon second string does a fairly comfortable number on Tonga.

A counter to that is that it's Tonga's first game in the WC.

We can batter Romania with whatever team we put out. It's the Tonga game we need to be at full strength for to amass a healthy points difference and if we didn't get a BP win it would be a disaster. We need to play our 1st team 3 games in a row to get out of the pool and with the recovery period from the 2 week break after the South Africa game we should be ok. If we stutter against Tonga with our 2nd string it could come back to bite us and wouldn't be great for our confidence heading into the SA and Scotland games.

Yep.. it could be a long tournament holding tackle bags for some of the players outside the match day 23 If Ireland go full strength from the opening gate.

  • Registered Users Posts: 31 inbloom427

All members of the squad will play an important role, along with a few replacements joining due to injuries. The idea of a “first XV” and “holding tackle bags” is so outdated… grow up

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,194 ✭✭✭Must love hardship

Sorry yeah a few might take turns running the water and kicking tee during the tournament.

Need fast ruck ball though, otherwise it'll be turtle phase.

Going full strength against Romania here isn't a good idea imo, but hey what the hell do I know.

I think it's going to be pretty much full strength the whole way through. I'm in agreement that we needed to go strong for Romania just for continuity and minutes in legs purposes.

Barring this game, there is not a whole lot of scope to be resting players anyway so we were always going to be asking our front-liners to go back to back the whole way through.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,422 ✭✭✭✭salmocab

I think it’ll be 13 or so of the strongest XV for Romania with 12/13 the following week against Tonga albeit a different 2/3 players rested then obviously full pelt for SA

  • Subscribers Posts: 41,915 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

    we've an 18 / 15 split in the squad

we have 3 forwards carrying injuries

we need 13 forwards for the match day squad so that only leaves 2 of our squad forwards who wont have an involvement against Romania (probably Tom O Toole and AN Other) as we've heard that Joe Mc is starting

in the backs, Johnny will play, Henshaw needs more gametime to get up to speed (IMO), bundee has often taken that 23 shirt.

The 22 shirt will be interesting. If he goes JGP / Murray id like to see Crowley off the bench for the last 30, plus hes more versatile being able to cover 12 and 15 a well.

    my suggested team:

Porter, Kelleher, Furlong, JMCC, Ryan, POM, JVDF, Doris, JGP, Sexton, Lowe, Henshaw, Ringer, Hansen, Keenan

Herring, Loughman, Bealham, Beirne, Baird, Murray, Crowley, Aki

I agree with your team though I think Beirne and Aki will start ahead of JoeMc and Henshaw. I think Sheehan will be on the bench going by pressers this week and for the same reason I think Byrne is possibly going to start or bench. Otherwise looks about right. I'm pretty convinced we'll rotate a good bit against Tonga and I think Crowley starts that game.

Know very little of about 21 of these players. Anyone give a lowdown of what level the players are playing at?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,546 ✭✭✭typhoony

I thought Paul O'Connell said in the presser the other day that Sheahan wasn't quite ready, I think sexton starts this game and the next and gets a good 70 mins into him for this game. I think Farrell has a thing for McCarthy, said before that he might be a bolter as a starter and not just against Romania.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,458 ✭✭✭kuang1

Team naming at what time? Can we watch live?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,546 ✭✭✭typhoony

12:30, not sure it's live, murray kinsellas twitter feed is the one to watch for the team announcement

    Crowley! Delighted for him.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,770 ✭✭✭arsebiscuits1

Big Joe out to prove he should start against South Africa.

I don't love the idea of dropping POM. But there is a lot to be said about having Beirne at 6 and Farrell clearly see it as a possibility too.

Either way.... this one is going to be a hefty score I should think.

Ireland at -61 on Skybet!! That might be the biggest one I've ever seen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,316 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

Has Beirne ever started at blindside for Ireland? Might be something we're looking at for later in the tournament.

Very good side all the same. Like that there's a lot of lineout prowess in the pack.

Worrying that Sheehan didn't make it - he had indicated he was fit during the week. No Hansen in what looks like a first choice team is surprising.

Not surprised by Aki but hard to know what to make of Josh on the bench.

That puts Crowley at no.2 in my opinion, unless Byrne is seen as preferred starter in Sexton's absence it looks like he's dropped to no.3.

Press duty during the week no longer hint at selection it seems!

    101 for Earls. Keeps going!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,877 ✭✭✭ionadnapokot

Looks like Porter & Doris will have to start every game. Ringrose also.

Dont know where this leaves Byrne. Maybe bench v Tonga.

    v Tonga

JOB; Earls, Ringrose, McCloskey, Hansen; Crowley, Murray; Porter, Kelleher, Bealham; Henderson, Ryan; Baird, vdF, Doris

    Reps:

Sheehan or Herring, Kilcoyne, Furlong, McCarthy or Beirne, Conan or POM, Casey, Sexton, Aki or Henshaw.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,428 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

Yeah, ok, good mix as expected, but mostly very experienced and at the top of their game.

I'd honestly expect this Ireland team to put 80 on these guys, without breaking much of a sweat. The only priority is to put the game away early and take absolutely no risks with bits of knocks and strains. And also to mind guys in the heat, with the mid-afternoon kick off.

The beirne for vdf is the only surprising one to me

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 10,735 Mod ✭✭✭✭aloooof

Has Beirne ever started at blindside for Ireland?

Pretty certain he has, and even has done for Farrell early on.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 10,735 Mod ✭✭✭✭aloooof

Expecting substitutions good and early for this one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,007 ✭✭✭almostover

I'm guessing this is a dry run for Beirne at 6 for the SA game and nothing else. IMO it shows that they're a leaning towards a back 5 of Hendo, Ryan, Beirne, VdF and Doris with JMcC and POM benching for the SA game.

Sexton starts. Fingers crossed he is ok.

Mid 30s temperature for kick off.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,757 ✭✭✭✭AdamD

Happy with that, not sure any other country bangs on about resting players quite so much as we do. We've a rest week after South Africa too.

Romania look to be very weak indeed - I watched extended highlights of their game against the US a few back and they lost by a decent margin to a mediocre at best US team.

The heat could definitely be a factor at least in terms of fitness.

Trying to play high tempo in 34/35 degree weather won't be easy.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,194 ✭✭✭Must love hardship

Looks like Ireland are going easy on Romania.. left the current world player of the year off the starting 15.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,762 ✭✭✭Cluedo Monopoly

Yeah I expect a 50 pointer margin. Romania were lucky to get in and have a bunch of injuries to starting players.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,877 ✭✭✭ionadnapokot

With Conan out it forced their hands to rotate Beirne into the backrow. I can only see Beirne, Ryan and POM all starting v SA.

Its McCarthy v Henderson and Baird v Conan for the bench spots.

This is certainly the most likely scenario for sure. And one I'm in favour of due to it being tried and tested in some of our biggest wins in recent years.

But Farrell is clearly looking at viable ways of getting 3 locks on the pitch at the same time. And I don't think it's to counteract Romanias formidable pack.

I do think our game how we've played it is more than enough to beat South Africa, and I think calls to put out the biggest beefiest pack from certain quarters has been overstated.

But that's not to say that Beirne at 6 would be a very good option if Joe McCarthy proves he's up to it.

If South Africa throw a bunch of forwards off the bench at once, and you have VDF available to come on - you get a line speed bump that might mitigate some of the hard carrying. Dunno - Hansen the biggest surprise to me.

Earls going to eat right into BOD's Ireland try scoring record.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,258 ✭✭✭✭Buer

I'd hold back on the belief that this is first choice or an indication that some will start every game.

There's a few obvious changes that will happen both in the team and the 23. I'm not sure if they're looking to hold a couple of first team guys back for the Tonga match or if some are carrying minor knocks but I'd fully expect guys like VDF and Hansen now to start against Tonga along with guys from the first choice bench like Bealham, Kilcoyne, Henderson etc.

I think this is to get a run out for the bulk of the first team and some minutes into their lungs and then a number of them will rest/bench for Tonga to fully focus on the SA game.

SA have Romania before us so they will almost certainly play a near full second string side for that game and be nicely rested for our game. I don't see us going full strength (or close to) against Tonga on the same basis. Tonga are a tougher proposition but they have been, by and large, a massive let down given the buzz around their initial wider squad selection. I might be wrong but I think the only team that Tonga have beaten in the last 2-3 years is Canada. They're closer to the likes of Romania than they are to Georgia.

Fitness pending, for the Tonga game, I'd expect something along the lines of: JOB, Hansen, Henshaw, McCloskey, Hansen, Byrne, Casey, Conan, VDF, Baird, Henderson, McCarthy, Bealham, Kelleher, Kilcoyne. Subs: Herring/Sheehan, Porter, Furlong, Beirne, POM, Murray, Crowley, Ringrose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,087 ✭✭✭Pete_Cavan

I'd go along with most of this. Most here are giving Tonga credit they don't deserve. In any case, the schedule demands that we rest a lot of the front liners against Tonga and they start preping for SA instead. The wider squad players getting the job done against Tonga is as much a part of earning the right to be world champions as beating the top teams.

Farrell can’t send the first choice lads out every week and expect them to be able to perform at the level required against a rested France/NZ in the quarters. The gap between the SA and the Scotland games doesn't mean much given our toughest games are backloaded to the end of the pool stage. Getting through the quarters and semis means managing the squad. Farrell has clearly been building a squad the last few years with this in mind.

For Tonga I'd expect much the same team but with Earls and Crowley to start. If Crowley is backup 10 then he needs the game time.

Re. Romania, I do feel a degree of sympathy for those Spanish players for whom Saturday would/should have been the start of a historic, crazy period where they got to play Ireland & South Africa at the WC - and yet instead a mess-up with player registration has resulted in them staying at home, while an inferior team took the place, all over again IIRC 2019 correctly.. (mind you, Portugal are probably feeling the reverse: delighted for Spain's mishaps, given they got into the repechage)
