Turning bog land into a field

I have just levelled 5 acres of bog and HOPE to turn it into a field. Was covered in bushes briars, lots of high banks and pools of water. All levelled now but very soft where turf is near the top. Will leave until Spring and hope it dries out. Any advice about how to cultivate and what type of grass seed to use in this boggy wet ground. Probably mad !!

It's an interesting question, are you mad, I mean? With the probable clampdown on reclaimed bog, hard to know. Certainly looking at the older grasses, I would think.

I saw similar done 20+ years ago and still going strong today. If it’s level I’d only run a pin harrow on it. For me a deep root grass seed mix should flourish

Thanks lads. What about lime ? Some people say it should never be used in big as it makes it soft ?

If you can spread clay 1 cm deep over the bog it will help prevent subsidence, reduce carbon emissions and grow as much grass as any good upland.

It's a lot of clay over 5 acres, it's about making a sod to cap the bog.

It was done on the road between shannonbridge and ballinasloe. He put sheep on it. Lots of drains. Looks ok.

Thinking of using a dumper on tracks to spread a few loads of clay on the softer bits. Need a bit of nice weather next spring.
