style of play is totally unrelated to clubs financial status in England. talking about england in the 90s. it was amateur era with most/all you mention so completely irrelevant to the sport now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,078 ✭✭✭joseywhales

Like I guess but the lineout wears down the clock, keeps possession and allows you to practice your set piece under pressure, like the game was won.

if the product was good , people would buy in and clubs wouldnt be folding - so not unrelated - and the fact that the English back line were better when amateur, actually re-affirms my point - but you always disagree with what I say,

you obviously enjoy that England style rugby , on that we can disagree

Dreadful game. Argentina abysmal and England not much better but played to their strength and fair play to Ford, stepped up when he needed to. Interesting to see what happens when Farrell is back available now.

George Ford did brilliantly by essentially throwing the English game plan out of the window and doing his own thing.

No doubt in my mind that tonight's England performance was the players ignoring what they've been coached in recent months.

I refuse to believe that Argentina were that bad. At 50 minutes they were still in it score wise but they looked to be completely out of ideas and went rudderless. To capitulate like that against 14 men is shocking.

The fact that England have been so poor of late benefitted them. The red card and a lack of belief in their attack made the 3 point option consistently worth it and after the second drop went over and Argentina missed their attempt the unfolding of the game felt almost forgone. Both teams realised that neither of their attacks were organised enough to break down the others defence, it's just England got there sooner on account of having no belief to begin with.

This looked like a possible end to Owen Farrell's international career. Absolutely immense from George Ford, cannot praise that icy-veined performance enough.

It was like he cast a spell on Argentina. By the time the second drop goal landed there was no way England were going to win that. Argentina's own hopeless attempt at a DG confirmed that they were completely spooked.

The best prep England did was getting red cards in every game. The fewer there are of them on the pitch the better they play and a unit.

It' not a vintage Argentina team but they are coming into this not long after the RC so they've had plenty of time together. Absolutely abysmal performance against what's frankly a terrible English team who today found simple game and just stuck to it. Has Checka lost the room? Seemed like that team were woefully unprepared.

Rather than throw it out they pretty much played the England/Leicester game plan perfectly - kick everything, maximize all set piece opportunities, win your own line out, disrupt opposition as much as possible, smother defence, play as narrowly as possible, build a score pragmatically through DGs and pens etc. Their execution was exemplary but they were helped by an absolutely abject Argentinian performance.

Throwing out the game plan out would have meant them throwing the ball around like crazy, attacking from everywhere, playing wide, and scoring lots of midfield and back 3 tries.

Borthwick would have been delighted with that performance.

Ignoring what do you mean? Their gameplan is to kick early and kick often, which is exactly what they did.

It's not going to be an end to Farrells's career at all, cmon, but it is going to be interesting to see what they do from here. Does Ford go back to the bench, does Farrell shift to 12? Ford was excellent for the game that was in it, would he be as effective against France or Ireland?

So far none of the minnows look like creating an upset. Namibia, Romania, Giorgia, New Zealand.

There was not a single clean break in Eng v Arg according to the RWC site stats.

In that heat, a man down for most of the match, and Ford with his kicking boots on, seemed like the obvious thing to just stick to the 3-pointers.

Game managment - 14 players to keep as fresh as possible no matter the score - no chance of BP at that stage no need to go chasing a try - take the breather and get set to defend again.

    3 fixtures today, 12, 4:45, 8

Could be a great day of rugby,

12 noon: Japan and Chile has potential to be a good game for the neutral, Japan underwhelming coming into the tournament and Chile complete unknown quantity underdogs making history, could be a fairytale upset. Would be a bit of a pity if Japan slipped back from 4 years ago, but I’ll be shouting for Chile nonetheless.

4:45PM: SA v Scotland holds the most interest for us. Really hoping Scotland can pull off a huge upset and rattle the Boks. If we then go on to beat SA then we’d have a dead rubber with Scotland, to be able to relax and rotate.

8PM: Perhaps the closest match of the round, no one could call this in advance, first up round 1, both teams fully fresh, very low expectations of the Welsh side coming in very low under the radar, kind of an unknown quantity, hard to believe Gatland doesn’t have them revved up ready to put in a performance. Fiji look like the surprise package of all of the teams coming into this tournament, defeating England in style, with a lot of pace and ferocious intent, possibly every rugby loving fan’s favourite team, as close to a barbarians style as it gets at test level, when the Flying Fijians turn it on there simply is no better spectacle in world rugby.

Chile v Japan was one of the non Box Office games I was most looking forward to and so far it has been super fun to watch, all 8 odd minutes lol.

It's also a neutral game I'm totally torn on. Always had a grà for the brave blossoms but also Chile has been a great wee team to cheer and will always get excited about new faces in world rugby. As I said, torn. Competitive draw?

    Probably worth of a yellow.

Not sure why it needs to be bunker reviewed. What law is there about tackling too low? It was a dirty tackle alright but very hard to prove he definitely had malicious intend.

    All gone a bit stale

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69,704 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

Japan made hard work of scoring against 14

  • Registered Users Posts: 548 ✭✭✭MaddChris

Japan living off Chile's mistakes. Struggling to get any territory on their own merit.

For Chile they just have to be a little bit tidier.

Seems like two entertaining teams, and those where you can clearly see the broader trends in play: one team whose stock has wobbled and dropped, while the other is buoyed by improving standards and planning, but lacking that nous from experience.
