I wouldn't be paying much attention to this poster. It is fairly obvious from reading the Waterford gaa forum that two of posters with the most posts just don't have a clue about gaa and the club scene in particular. Lads who played to under 14 but still go to alot of Waterford games, often like to think they know it all. And throw in being a cousin to some ex Waterford hurlers and they really think they know it all. The Waterford forum is a good laugh in fairness, you have this poster who likes to tell everyone he has a famous cousin, another poster who likes to think he is an advisor to his great pal Davy and of course I couldn't forget mr negativity.

Only 1 DLS flag up in Ballybricken

Years ago the place would be full of DLS/Mount Sion or Roanmore Bunting/flags

Good effort by DLS but Ballygunner showing how ruthless they can be and looking like its 10 in a row

Congrats Kevirl what a win, delighted for ye

did ye see this coming ?

All the talk was about cappoquin from the outset this year since they amalgamated with Tourin

Caught the second half of todays final. Was pretty much one way traffic. No real excitement in the crowd. That's a few Waterford county finals that have been on TG4 in recent years and not a close hard fought final in any of them. Not good for the neutral viewers. Not Ballygunners problem of course obviously a very strong team but the chasing pack seem miles away from knocking them off their perch.

    Thanks.

That performance was definitely in the team, but to deliver on the final stage was incredible. Cappoquin rightly were favourites going in, our lads would acknowledge themselves that they were v fortunate to come through against Shamrocks in the semi final. We have been finishing strong all year though and fitness levels v strong. Paddy Mullally having some year, first Carlow now this.

Great year for the club with the division 2 minor title secured only 10 days ago too. Fantastic to see the young kids in Ferrybank jerseys flooding the field at the end.

Quite the night in the briar rose last night!

    Great seeing stuff like that

Congrats to the Ballygunner not many 10 in a row senior winners in the county. Going to be tough in Munster

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,528 ✭✭✭914

How can there be many when this is the first time that 10 in a row was achieved?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,541 ✭✭✭Asdfgh2020

4 or 5 of November next day out for b’gunner…..v cork opposition at home I think. Makes a bit of a joke of the ‘split season’…….no real difference in dates from when the all Ireland was first Sunday in sept…🤔

  • Registered Users Posts: 38,386 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Auto correct meant 'Country' instead of 'County' OK ?

Well Ballymacarbry are going for 42 in a row so Ballygunner have a bit to go yet 🤣

Good God. This has literally nothing to do with split season, nor was it ever a target of the split season. It’s amazing how many people decide the split season is to blame for everything. The vast majority of club players love the setup. Move on from it and accept that maybe the people putting in the work deserve to be listened to.

Sure. Previously, we had 2 rounds of championship hurling and 2 rounds of football beginning on the last week of March leading into April. This meant club players back training in January for fitness training. Then we had a few rounds of county. We’d wedge in another round or two of championship around June on a weeks notice. Then back to county for a while. Then some time around August Waterford would get knocked out and there would be a crazy panic to run off the championships, which would run until end of October if you played both codes. Sometimes there would be no June games depending on what the county calendar was like. I had summers where we played games in April and nothing then until August.

This meant a 10 month calendar for all club players. Clubs were losing players hand over fist as many players simply weren’t putting up with it. There was also no certainty regarding fixtures because it was all based on where county were in the championship. If we were going through the back door or playing in a league final we’d play on a different weekend than if we weren’t. The uncertainty meant it was impossible to plan holidays etc.

So we had to train for 10 months, never knew when we were playing with certainty. People were rightly fed up of it. It was destroying clubs and championships.

Credit where it’s due, the co. premier intermediate championship was just the tonic the county needed when we have a senior championship that’s become such a damp squib.

There were some really excellent games of a high quality and some of the top talent in the county on show in this grade. People were worried that Ballygunner would cake walk this aswell but far from the case we’ve seen there is plenty of life left in so many other clubs if the right structures are in place to help them. Ferrybank are the prime example, they struggled to make any inroads at east intermediate for many years but thrived in the new structure this year against higher quality opposition they graudually improved every week as the championship went on and ended up with a famous victory against a much fancied cappoquin. Congrats a to them and also Brickey Rangers who won the Intermediate grade having come through the west division and then beating Portlaw in the co final. They’re an up and coming young team and now go up to intermediate premier where they’ll be a force to be reckoned with.

I think we’ve seen a clear case to reduce to number of senior teams and increase the number that of no if teams at PI level. It can only serve to increase the standard of games in the county over time

Agree @Mastermcgrath re PI a new lease of life into the grade, fantastic to be going to see us playing the likes of Ballysaggart, clashmore/kinsalebeg, shamrock and cappoquin and not the same old foes in the eastern championship year in year out.

Maybe don't reduce senior sizes too soon though, give us a chance like ;)

Roanmore beat Ballygunner in u15 div1 semi final last night. Huge win for them, will play mt sion in final

Congratulations to Ferrybank hurlers on winning the P.I. championship and going up Senior next season. Will be interesting to see if they can stabilise and survive in Senior and kick on. Having been up at Walsh Park Sunday and seeing how easily the Gunners achieved their 10-in-a-row, I, like everyone else, am wondering who can catch them over the next few years as they keep the conveyor belt of talent coming through from underage teams.

DLS are coming but still look a few rungs below as do Mount Sion who nearly caught them last year, and no other team seems close. A lot is made of the catchment area for Ballygunner GAA and it is a factor though the excellence of their underage structures, coaching etc. are more important. But the big parish/big population argument does have some merit if it can be mined for hurlers and Ferrybank is definitely a club that has a big catchment if they can stay senior and attract more and more kids in. One club in a parish/village/suburb of 6000+ has to have potential if harnessed right.

how many red cards were there…?

Plus lots of mentors foaming at the mouth and spitting bile at the ref/other officials?

It was the year before last that mount Sion nearly caught them (2021).

Last year ballygunner beat them fairly comfortable in the final by 9 points.

If someone is to beat BG, it will probably be in the rounds before the final

  • Registered Users Posts: 748 ✭✭✭Dunmoreroader

I have 😉 Thought it was all Soccer out there, Gaelic 2nd and Hurling way down below kite-surfing and beach-volleyball? 😎

Could say the same about Dungarvan (why aren't they doing better?) but I take your point. My point is that Ferrybank are Senior now and the potential is there.

1 red card to a ballygunner lad. It was a great evening for hurling 6 games. Some fine hurlers on view and not all in div 1. Lismore Clan na Gael went to extra time. Ferrybank/Saviours v Erins Own very enjoyable. Just feel once a lot of these lads come out of minor we will loose a lot. An under 19 or go back to minor and under 21 to nurture this talent

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,259 ✭✭✭Mastermcgrath

Dungarvan came as close as anyone to Ballygunner in the this year…. For what its worth there’s a bit of a myth that Dungarvan is such a big club, Abbeyside would have higher playing numbers and their competing with Brickey Rangers for numbers aswell

not a good advertisement for the new 'Premier Intermediate Football Championship'

    FT- Ballinameela 0-7- Rathgormack 0-5

  • Registered Users Posts: 88 ✭✭Venom69

    Why?it's just one match.

Roanmore beat st saviours 1-10 to 07 also.Roanmore seem to be putting in more effort at football in the last 3 years winning the junior and intermediate titles.

  • Registered Users Posts: 38,386 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

It's a terrible score for a full game

Roanmore definitely a contender for 'club of the year'. Had a great season in the different grades in the Hurling and going well in the football as you mentioned

Have we had a club of the year or players of the year since COVID?
