Whatever about the athletics, I hope they don’t wheel out rigger buggers the first show out. That’s exactly the problem with RTE. If you’re stuck a. Find someone from the canteen. If you can’t find someone b. Get in a rugger bugger or GAA-head. Sick of it!

I had broken the habit of watching this a good while ago for the same reason I stopped listening to the host on radio. Grew to hate his saccharine style and bullshit patter.

Will give Kielty a chance and wish him luck if there is life left in the format.

But it's not just the run of the mill, let's interview Johnny Sexton randomly.

We are about to hit the rugby World Cup, with Ireland as no1 team in the world. Admittedly the players usually are quite generic when they are interviewed, so perhaps it would be good to hear an in-depth chat with the English man trying to win the WC for us?

Likely members of the Irish soccer team* will be on to discuss their World Cup success.

*I use the term Mens Team when referring to the mens team to avoid the recent non referral confusion in the media.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70,232 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

That would be a good start. I'm sure there are plenty who would like to hear from them.

Pauw should, hopefully, be binned by then, so it could be a very interesting interview.

Misery slot. Ryan turbridy on to tell us about his traumatic 6 months.

Judging by this thread we should have on first night Commissioner Drew Harris talking about his efforts to modernise the police force and remind is if the new resources being put in place to protect British tourists in Temple Bar. Englisman Andy Farrell on his hopes and dreams of managing the English rugby team to glory in 2027. Ex U21 Irish Association football players Jack Grelish and Declan Rice on their transition to the English team and their thoughts on the current Irish team and in a sudden twist Irish womans football player Aoife Madden changing eligability from England to Ireland.Athlete Mark English with his review of the World championship. Funnyman and BBC favourite Brenda's O Carroll on to talk about the 4 new episodes of the British favourite Mrs Brown's Boys

    I really like Patrick Kielty.

Recently I went down a rabbit hole in youtube looking for some old material from him and I found this golden nugget.

It was great TV with everyone messing and in my minds eye I tried to imagine Tubs and how he would deal with a larger than life Meatloaf in this situation.

    Love it 😂

I’ve never been a LLS watcher but I’m really looking forward to watching Patrick Kielty.

That suggests it will be more lighthearted than the previous misery that was inflicted.

I'm glad the owl survived too. 😁

I'd say you are not alone.

I expect there will be a lot of new LLS viewers for the first few shows anyway.

    This.

The format is a dead duck. A pre recorded & edited show is the way forward. Post production does a lot of the heavy lifting and eliminates the dross. Some better writing too will enable the host to be more probing, more witty, more agile.

Hopefully no house band or cringey phone competition.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,021 ✭✭✭Oscar_Madison

Wouldn’t be a fan of pre recorded tbh- then it becomes any other show- I think pre recording will kill off TLLS.

The shorter time duration (90 mins) will work in its favour - PK will have a certain pressure on him to “perform” well, over these 90 mins but really, it’s the format, the guests, the discussion the panel approach that will make or break this show.

If it’s just one book publicity interview after another it will die. I genuinely support PK and I’ll certainly be kind to him in his first 3 months but he can’t carry the full weight of responsibility on his shoulders - he needs massive support from the researchers and producer to get engaging guests who are allowed to talk- to get controversial topics going- to get debate going but without it becoming a Monday night current affairs show with audience-that’s a fine line there but it can be done -but to also put “entertainment” back into the show as it was starved of that for the last decade.

If the misery slot is retained then everyone associated with the show deserves a p45

The house band, or at least the original one (the Camembert Quartet), was very much a Tubridy thing though, carried over from Tubridy Tonight (and were dumped quite hastily when Covid arrived). I’m not sure they’ll be retained (though the later, post-Covid band was less tied to Tubridy’s style, I think).

Not a snowballs chance the competition will be dropped, it’s a revenue generator for RTE.

I think it’s common case the run time was too long (although I expect the Toy Show will continue to run a bit longer), informally it had been already quietly shortened to an 11:10pm finish in recent times anyway - it seemed they were often struggling for material to fill a full two hour slot in recent years.

That’s probably why RT was asking every guest “And how did you feel?”, regardless of what it is they said.

I see the new time slot revealed as 9.35-11.15.

I wonder who the show sponsor is now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,572 ✭✭✭✭Leg End Reject

    I doubt it's Renault anyway. 😂

They might struggle to get a sponsor unless PK makes a success of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,083 ✭✭✭Rubberchikken

Won't be watching. Haven't rte on the telly anyway.

It was interesting to watch the video on first post to see tubridy in action. Is he incapable of sitting still for even a second or is it a way of grabbing attention?

Truly annoying. Glad I just can't be bothered with rte.

I'd say another car company or possibly Three given they must have a basket of marketing money sitting in their account since they dropped sponsoring FAI.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,453 ✭✭✭Asus X540L

That ad with Patrick Kielty's head spinning around like the exorcist is one of the worst things I've seen.

It's actually disturbing. What were RTE thinking?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,795 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

He was on with Miriam earlier. First thing he did was mention the name of his new film.

One of the hallmarks of the LLS under Gay Byrne was that there was no advance publicity of who the guests were or what subjects might be the topic of the evening. Exceptions might be when there was a referendum or some such matter in the news.

as a consequence, viewers tuned because they do not want to miss out, as most times, the programme was not to be missed. Of course, they did have the odd turkey.

It would good if Paddy Kiltie could get back that unmissable reputation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,668 ✭✭✭corkie

they did have the odd turkey.

Agreed. Spider crawl down the audience upcoming. Maybe he'll pee on the aisle.

It's called humour. Something Turgidy would never have been seen dead doing.

I could easily see Tubridy having his 'owl' head spin around. He loves gimmicky stuff like that.

I wouldn't see a whole lot of humour in that ad personally.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say I think this is the end of the late late show. I believe this year's toy show will show a significant loss of viewers for the first time and that loss will get bigger year on year going forward

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,618 ✭✭✭✭elperello

Whatever about the toy show I think the LLS will continue.

I don't see how a nation famed for story tellers, musicians, singers, poets, authors and actors can't maintain a chat show once a week.

And you could throw in a few spoofers and chancers to make up the numbers 😀

    Even BBC are covering it.

The intro music in the clip above sounds like the original from Gay Byrne's era, I Dornie why they changed it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,471 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

Was thinking the toy show aspect of the LLS should be a separate charity donation show every year like BBCs Children In Need. Make it a country wide event too, not just D4/LLS presenter focussed and get loads more kids involved and loads more money raised at Christmas time. Also, more toys, the corporations could donate loads and outdo each other too, to raise even more money for charity.

I cannot help but notice how low key everything is .... 2 days to go no guest announced .... apart from a few showing of this Patrick Kielty/owl promo not much RTE hype either ... it is as if to say RTE know they are flogging a dead horse ....

I cannot see this being anything special ... Charlie Rich and Elvis and Ray Charles are all dead ... and music is dead and buried with them as no one is following them singing anything worthwhile that RTE will promote .... it is all just Imelda May n Dermot Nepotism .... comedy is just smut .... reality TV is a pandemic that makes Covid 19 look tame ... let's face it .... the entertainment industry is dead and buried ... the Late Late Show is as pointless as a Christmas tree in July ...

I think you're being a bit overly positive there Lumphammer.

Mad that people are saying the promo clip is 'disturbing'. They must have little enough to be worrying about in their lives ffs

In normal times Tubridy would give the final guest list for Friday's show out after his radio show on Thursday morning, wonder will we get a list tomorrow from Maura on Nine O'Clock Show? The absence of any leaked guest during the week makes me think there will be no 'box office' guests.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,763 ✭✭✭squonk

Yeah right now it’s a Schrödinger’s box. It’s could be brilliant or it could be shíte. Everyone will end up tuning in to open the box and see! Publishing a lineup now just ruins the whole thing and will probably cost them viewers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,994 ✭✭✭✭expectationlost

what is he doing in that radio ad?

  • Registered Users Posts: 847 ✭✭✭Denny61

We could have tom cruise ..Donald trump David Beckham and santa clause .all on the show. But yet no body would give a toss or even remember what they talked about..cos everyone will occupied by how the new man will present the show ..his demeanour. His performance basically the whole package..so yes ..we probably mite only get the tea lady and a few usual drop ins ...so let's not get stressed over what personalitys appear or not appear..the eyes and ears will be on Mr kielty. For Friday night..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 930 ✭✭✭lumphammer2

I have never seen it so muted/low key ... no hype ... not much promo ... by now there'd be some guest mentioned or at very least rumoured ... you can be sure no big name is coming ... there rarely are any and most of the good ones are dead or will never be here ... it is very clear what is going on with RTE's finances .... clearly that is the reason for why the current promotion of TLLS is so muted ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 930 ✭✭✭lumphammer2

Exactly .... the format and esp type of guest is the MAIN problem ... let's take a quick look ...

Format ... I believe not everything has to be live ... have a hybrid show ... scrap the house band and the silly intro they give to guests ... this costs money and adds nothing ... end that Valentines special ...

Type of guest ... RTE canteen guests promoting their wares needs to go ... the Bannon, Baz, etc. show ... music needs to be broadened ... nothing to my taste has been promoted ... I'm sure there are singers out there doing the classics from Elvis, Charlie Rich, Ray Charles, et al ... but RTE insist on all that modern stuff written by these acts themselves ... often they cannot write ... I'm sick of Dermot Nepotism, Imelda May, boybands and talent show winners singing songs written by ex boyband singers ... Tubridy turned the LLS into something smutty ... that needs to end ... all that Luv Island/Maura Higgins worship and that smut masquerading as comedy too ... all needs to end ... the misery slot needs to be replaced with more inventive debates/discussions ... health related issues should get its own programme like Check Up years back ...

  • Kielty has known misery in his own life, but he’ll more than likely avoid bringing too much of it onto the LLS, or not let it be the main focus of his guests as happened too often during Tubridy’s watch and made heavy weather of what should be mostly an entertaining show.

  • Tubridy turned the LLS tabloid, Valentines special is such cringe. He was not a presenter with much intellectual depth, so red top content was about the height of what he could deal with most of the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,021 ✭✭✭Oscar_Madison

As we’ve seen with Tommy Tiernan on a Saturday night, you can have an extraordinary conversation….. with an ordinary person.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,605 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

One of the shítest things Tubbers did with TLLS (and there were many) was releasing the whole guest list in advance.

    Scrap the cap!
