John Duggans head spinning today. Painful to listen to.

He couldn't wait to interrupt with glee whenever Brighton scored yet when Utd pulled a goal back all I heard was Shane Keegan saying "some strike by Hannibal".

I had to check my app to see if Utd actually scored.

As another user said, he's losing it over Kenny too.

Is he still in full on Kenny support or is he accepting begrudgingly that it hasn't worked? Heard Shane Coleman saying he should be given an other contract yesterday morning when talking to OTB at 7.30.

Dunphy was the same. Listening to his Pod, I did wonder was I watching the same game? Himself and Giles praising Duffy and making no reference to Kennys tactical errors.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,745 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

Why would they? The metrics y which people are judge by Giles and Dunphy are:

    1. Is he a good lad?

    2. Is he doing his stuff?

I genuinely thought your comment was a massive exaggeration of the type of thing some gormless rugby head would say.Only found out today that Jamie Heaslip tweeted exactly this last week. How could anyone ever take him seriously in any walk of life after him tweeting that.Shows you the type of cult Irish Rugby is when the players seem to 100% believe the bullshit corporate PR the IRFU and their sponsors have been feeding everyone.

I know he was a fantastic player but I cant listen to Giles on OTB at all, he always talks about "doing his stuff" or "doing it". I'm sure his tactical acumen is amazing given the level he played at but his ability to communicate that is exceptionally poor. Which is fine if he wasnt being paid to do that.

I was a weekly OTB podcast listener and it did fill a lot of my podcast feed but that's mostly cos A Slight Tangent was an hour long and the paper review were my main staples and maybe the odd random interview/segment e.g. Pat Nevin or ROG when he's on, with 3 kids its not easy to get time to listen to much else. I am at a loss for finding a substitute currently and have considered paying €10 a month but I really dont think it's worth it for me. I downloaded the OTB app and I considered using the 3 free listens a month but still havent done that for 1 month yet.

Giles used to be a top class analyst. His tactical awareness was far ahead of what was typical of UK TV coverage back in the 80s and 90s.

But he’s too old and has clearly been out of his depth since the early 2000s at least. RTÉ were right to dump him when they did.

They seem to imply that the Aviva is full because of Kenny.

I don't think it's because of Kennys football.

I think it's mainly down to post covid boom of money being pumped into the economy and insane price rises in other areas of the economy. I see it amongst myself and my own friends, going to events and socialising. Covid really drove home how good it is.

Same thing happened in GAA. You have nearly 15k for an Allianz League match in Mayo in awful weather in the middle of January or February.

I think Kenny is a big factor in the Aviva being full. By bringing through youngsters, he brought back a lot of positivity after MoNs final campaign. There was something exciting about what he's trying to do.

The Sunday Paper Review was odd tho advocating for him to get another contract while also accepting his reign has been pretty terrible. Joe stating that the normal fan is happy with Kennys reign seems far from the mark. He's done.

Kenny didn't have any other choice.

You just have to look at the fact he's starting Duffy, McClean, Doherty and Coleman.

Him not reacting to Koemans tactical change and not adapting to Greece playing us off the park is nothing to do with players, its incompetance.

He also could have played different players to Duffy and McClean. Coleman and Doherty are excellent players for us and I'm not quite sure why you'd lump them in there with others....

Doherty is a defensive liability. He is constantly costing us goals

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,626 ✭✭✭bren2001

Doherty has been one of Irelands best players. Comparing McClean to Doherty is crazy

What did Jamie Heaslip say about tech? I've seen a few tweets about this but don't know what its about.

Interesting to see if OTB go after the Simon Zebo story or will they just accept the dog ate my homework excuse/apology.

I wouldn't assume so. He has really show his true colours here. But the Rugby fraternity are sacred and untouchable. Even if you google it I'd say MSM aren't really doing a number on him. Inconsistent with how other sports people are treated. Look how much Neil Francis has gotten away with FFS.

Cringeworthy, but he works for Stripe now. Must be spending too much time on LinkedIn

Not sure what games you watching. Doherty is hot and cold. For a premier league player he certainly doesn't show it for Ireland. I've no affiliation or loyalty to McClean but he's great for Ireland. Can see the legs are going but he's gives it socks n good deliveries into box too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,745 ✭✭✭Brock Turnpike

James McClean "great" for Ireland. I've heard it all now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,626 ✭✭✭bren2001

We must have been watching different games. There was a time Doherty was the first name on my team sheet for Ireland.

McClean has been past it for a while now. Was awful against France. Has been a liability under Kenny (not that Kenny had much choice).

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,418 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Whilst I wouldn't call Doherty great for Ireland that can be said for any of our players to be honest. The clue is in the silly possession system that Kenny is trying to play. One of Dohertys and McCleans best attributes is direct running, getting to the byline and getting in a cross. Or else coming inside and shooting. We just don't do that anymore.

Indeed our strongest game over the years has always been to get the ball into attacking positions quickly and turn defenders. Apparently though this is dinosaur stuff so we have to go out and try to pass for the sake of it.

McClean is certainly past it and he is bitter that he is ever questioned about that. A league 2 player has no business being anywhere near our international squad in all honesty.

OTB with John Duggan have lost a lot of respect at this stage. Journalist integrity has gone out the window for them with their relentless backing of failure and some of them continue in that vein. Their backing of Kenny and his shambolic regime has little to do with football and more to do with access to him and his backroom team. OTB with the paywall have all but killed themselves. They just aren't good enough to pull off nonsensical, contrarian or controversial opinions and charge for it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,741 ✭✭✭Raoul

Tbf against France and Netherlands, we were often trying to play Idah and Ogbenne in behind the defence quickly. In the first game Ogbenne gave Hernandez a torrid time. Idah got the better of VVD with one of these type plays but the ref gave VVD a random free.

Slightly off tangent here folks.. is this the Off The Ball forum or a Irish Football Chat?

  • Registered Users Posts: 811 ✭✭✭Butson

So, ROG is not exclusive to OTB subscribers then?

  • Registered Users Posts: 830 ✭✭✭amlinopta

Has his finger in a lot of pies. Heavily promoted on RTE radio ads with Donal Lenihan for Irish Examiner columns

  • Registered Users Posts: 811 ✭✭✭Butson

True, but if you can get big names like Rog free on platforms like the above, it does it make it a harder sell for OTB re subscriptions.

How do I sign up for the months free trial? I can't see anything about it. I want to sign up, binge listen to what I want, then unsubscribe. I think the free month is only for if you sign up for the year?
